Unnecessary, but not totally fruitless like the Lion King. For some reason, CGI talking Dogs works much better than CGI talking Lions. Are dogs more personable? Relatable? I think that might be why it works better. Not making talking animals and relying on Jeff Daniels for the 101 Dalmatian film was a mistake. I'd gather they will attempt to remake that too with the animals speaking. No less, it didn't stop my wife from balling her eyes out when the Tramp tells his story. Having it set in the same time-frame also makes the climax work. If you're fan of the original I'd gather you'd enjoy this too. Tessa Thompson is fine playing Lady. Oh and of course they completely changed the Siamese cat song and scene to be more culturally appropriate and it sucks.
