So far the worst excuse for a film this year next to Polar, this is a sci-fi dystopia that resembles many high concepts of the genre at the same time, from episodes of Black Mirror to The Stepford Wives to Parts: The Clonus Horror. The screenplay is complete rubbish, just a long parade of horrible expository one-liners and overly dramatic character arcs that don't ring true, so most of the critical praise given to this title I suspect was due to the beautiful cinematography and set design. While a lot of care went towards how this film looks, I don't really like it. All shots have a reasonably aesthetic composition, but the color palette and cinematography... it just looks like an instagram filter instead of the rich, crisp focus of a visual masterpiece like The Neon Demon (which has some thematic similarities) or even Tarsem Singh's works.
EDIT: The only rare moments where the movie came alive had to do with Jovovich's villain.
