What do you mean?

I had to download the HBO Max app for my TV. It didn't come pre-installed.

The only things that came pre-installed were Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime.

I downloaded Disney+, HBO Max, the local news app, youtube, PLEX and Vudu (only because i have some movie codes tied to that).

I haven't had a lot of experience with the smart TVs, but the ones I have messed with, you couldn't download new apps/channels like a Roku box. What came pre-installed was all there was.

I guess it depends on what Brand TV you get. Samsung has their own "app store". I suspect others like Sony and LG do too.

Samsung also integrates with their own Smartthing hub which I am already invested in.

Yes, we have an LG TV that you can download apps on. Of course, I'm not in the US, so I have no idea what apps it offers that are relevant to Skitch, but the possibility exists.

You have a better app selection with Samsung then LG. Running HBO MAX through the PS4 on the small LG upstairs, while the Samsung in the basement just has an app.

The appstore on Samsung TVs are nice. I will warn people, that after 3 years of whatever model TV, the TV companies appear to discontinue supporting the stores. leaving them for dead.

Before I moved, I had four Samsung TVs from different eras. Only two of the four were able to actively download new apps (along with Disney+)

The other two stores were discontinued and dead.

Because spending $150 for 1 show that you'll likely never watch is better than subscribing for a year? Makes perfect sense.

More like 99 at most for 7 seasons which plus tax is around 14 or 15. And no I don't want to pay for another streaming service that I'll hardly use which costs 180 for the year. And dude I rewatch stuff all the time which is why I buy certain movies plus I'll own it. Physical media is pretty cheap these days. Subscribing for one show is dumb as hell.

Amazson says 150 but if you can find it for 99 that's a good deal. Just seems weird to spend that amount of money on 1 show when you have hundreds at your finger tips for a 12th of the price.

That is good casting.Yeah, but it's going to be hard seeing anyone other than Ashley Johnson as Ellie, not because she has such a distinct voice, but also because I've actually seen what she looks like from her other projects, so I always associate her face with Ellie's; it's too bad she's not actually around the same age as her IRL. I also think Logan proved that Dafne Keen could make for the perfect Ellie, if I'm being honest.

The “heard it all before” attitude is silly to me- numerous documentaries get made about historical events and figures all the time. I love Allen’s movies but if you’re the general public and don’t follow tabloids, twitter... you’ll likely have not much knowledge about Dylan’s claim.

I love Allen’s movies but if you’re the general public and don’t follow tabloids, twitter... you’ll likely have not much knowledge about Dylan’s claim.I haven't seen the documentary (in Canada it's streaming on a service called Crave, which I don't have), but if it were only a primer on the case for people who aren't familiar with the details and brought to light no new information, the amount of media coverage it's received already would be wildly disproportionate. Actually, it would still be disproportionate even if there were any new damning evidence proving Allen molested his daughter (rather than a lot of circumstantial evidence of him being creepy in the months leading up to the alleged molestation). As Sophie Gilbert points out in an article in The Atlantic (https://www.theatlantic.com/culture/archive/2021/02/hbo-allen-v-farrow-review/618116/), this case differs from the Harvey Weinstein affair in that Allen isn't accused of abusing his position in the film industry but his position as a parent, nor was he able to silence Dylan Farrow in the same manner that Weinstein silenced his accusers (Maureen Orth's long article detailing the accusation against Allen (https://www.vanityfair.com/magazine/1992/11/farrow199211) appeared in Vanity Fair in November, 1992 and is available online). In other words, the question of whether Allen molested his daughter is not a matter of public interest in the same way that the Weinstein case was, as the latter pointed to a broader problem within the US film industry as a whole. The only reason people are interested in this case (as opposed to thousands of others where a parent is accused of molesting their child) is because Allen and Mia Farrow are famous.

Mal
02-25-2021, 02:01 AM
Plenty of documentaries are made about non-famous individuals and abuse they experience or are accused, even convicted of? After the first episode, I have assumptions about where it'll go but also not at all, since most of what I knew was confirmed, with additional info and interviews provided by friends of the family. The recent Lorena Bobbitt documentary on Amazon had no new content, but as a retrospective on domestic violence and sensationalized crime, it was a compelling, worthwhile experience from start to finish.

baby doll
02-25-2021, 05:33 AM
Just to clarify, the point I was trying to make was less about the documentary per se (which, again, I haven't seen) than about the coverage of it in the media, which is treating the accusation against Allen as if it were a matter of national importance on par with the Weinstein case (which was significant less for the specific accusations against Weinstein than for what it revealed about the culture within the film industry that enabled and covered up his crimes for decades).

Idioteque Stalker

Good AvF discussion, but imo it is pointless to think too hard about whether or not this type of doc (along with Leaving Neverland and Surviving R. Kelly) is "necessary." People love to watch them and say "eww," and therefore they are wildly popular. So long as they stay that way they will continue to be made.

The way in which the Weinstein stuff was indicative of a larger institutional problem suggests, instead of of documentary tell-all, that story will eventually get the prestige film treatment (some may argue it's already on its way with The Assistant).

WarnerMedia’s Rooster Teeth Studios announced development on a new animated series for HBO Max: Slam!, based on the critically-acclaimed BOOM! Studios graphic novels created by author-screenwriter Pam Ribon (Ralph Breaks the Internet, Smurfs: The Lost Village, Moana)and artist Veronica Fish (Spider-Woman, Archie). Ribon will adapt and executive produce the series, which is being produced by Rooster Teeth Studios, BOOM! Studios and Minnow Mountain.

Slam! is an adult animated half-hour series set in the fast-paced, hard-hitting, super cheeky, all-female world of banked track roller derby, following two young women who will have to decide if their budding friendship is stronger than the pull of a team when a win is on the line. The series will be brought to life using a groundbreaking combination of rotoscoped and 3D animation to take viewers into the sport in a way never visualized on screen before.

Good dead and extremely tempting.

I wish I could search their catalog tho to see if it's worth it. I think they have a lot of older movies & a fair bit of westerns but I'm not really sure.

Wait, how come I cannot find Oz nor Deadwood at HBO Max Latin America? Aren't they like, two of the most iconic HBO shows?

I was about to sign up. I've watched everything illegally for the bulk of my adult life but now got a fine from the internet company and decided it was maybe time to get a couple of platforms. Awful timing.

I think the next couple years will encourage piracy as streaming begins to hit that eventual ceiling. There's way too many services and I don't want to pay for them all.

Yup.

Hbo max suffers from the same thing as netflix....they almost seem to hide the content I really want. I have to search and search to find out Holy shit you have [content I can't wait to hit play on] on here?!
