I cannot WAIT to watch this. I adore the original Dolemite film.

You will fucking LOVE it, Skitch. The movie is like a giant hug, with one arm celebrating black culture and the other celebrating independent film.

There's a certain thinness to the story and characters and the script relies on an ass-ton of showbiz cliches, but it's so relentlessly upbeat (my God!) and funny enough often enough that I didn't care.

Four stars. Big cheers. I had a huge smile on my face when it ended.

Only one real criticism, and that's of Netflix: Part of what this movie is about is the joy of performance and a love of the audience. Well, we watch the movie and we can see the joy but not feel the love, because "Dolemite" is tailor made for a communal experience and nobody will ever see it that way. What a complete fucking shame.

Fuck yes. It looks like a mix of Dolemite and Baaaaaadaass!, that sorta bio-doc Mario van Peebles made about his dad Melvin that was just an absolute delight.

Mostly conventional biopic beats, but that’s not such a bad thing for a true story this naturally winning, a fantastic cast, and a joyful tone that mirrors the lead’s infectious showmanship most entertainingly. Moore’s beginnings are told a bit too choppy as the film rushes towards its real interest in his onscreen Dolemite persona. Once Moore’s ambition for filmmaking takes flight though, the film finally nails all its elements into place and the enthusiasm on display is just so easy to get swept up along with. And I want Wesley Snipes’ reaction shots to never end. 7.5/10

I thought this was honestly a way better celebration of clueless filmmaking than The Disaster Artist. And Murphy's performance as Dolemite is about as good as Franco's. Leaving that comparison aside, it's true that there's nothing new under the sun here in terms of ideas, but the whole progression of the character from frustration to artistic accomplishment is quite good. And Wesley Snipes rocks his supporting role.
