Anyone here heard {{{sunset}}}'s Bright Blue Dream? I'd never even heard of 'em until a few minutes ago and probably wouldn't've paid any mind except for the fact that they've a song entitled "Old Sandy Bull Lee," which you all must agree is almost unspeakably awesome.

I'm with KF on the Jicks album .. it hasn't received nearly the amount of buzz it deserves.

The new Sun Kil Moon album is good, and Vampire Weekend is a lot of fun .. other than that, nothing I've heard this year has been earth-shattering.

So far, this year:

Sun Kil Moon's April
Daniel Lanois' Here is What is
Meat Beat Manifesto's Autoimmune

Haven't heard it yet, but I picked it up last week. I'll bump it up near the top of my to-listen pile.

It's a portmanteau of On the Road's stand-in for Burroughs, as you caught, and Sandy Bull, the early American primitive banjo/guitar picker. His first album is really great.

Strongly recommended to anyone craving a Postal Service follow up album, fans of Figurine, DNTEL, The Notwist, etc. Styrofoam collaborated with Gibbard on a previous album and collabs with Jim Adkins of Jimmy Eat World and several others here. This is nothing groundbreaking, but it's a really fun glitch pop album that I've been craving as it seems most of the bands of the genre have been on hiatus.

Aside from recently getting my hands on Gnarls Barkley's new disc and the soundtrack to the movie Once I really don't listen to new music all that much these days. I'm too busy going back through older discs and listening to anything I can get my hands on, free or not free. So this thread is the thread for me.

BTW, does In Rainbows count as a 2007 or 2008 release? I have a feeling its 2007 but since the actual CD came out in stores in 2008 I'm not 100% sure.

Rap:
Danish all-star DJ's and rappers joined to form a group called Majors. They put the entire record up on their MySpace (http://www.myspace.com/majorsdk) page.
Recommended tracks: This Is How We Do - but the entire record is very good.

Synth-rock:
Spleen United - MySpace (http://www.myspace.com/spleenutd)
Recommended track: My Tribe.

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - Lie Down in the Light
The Hold Steady - Stay Positive

Silver Jews - Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea is also really good though not quite on the same level as those other two.

New Erykah Badu album is living up to the hype so far (7 tracks in, out of 11.) The two Madlib-produced tracks are especially satisfying, with the Yamasuki Singers-sampling "The Healer" being my favorite track of '08 so far, no contest.

New song from Swedish rappers, Looptroop Rockers, called Trance Fat. It's so amazingly catchy and the line "I hope that you choke on your freedom fries" must be the best line in any chorus, ever.

Looptroop Rockers feat. Rakaa - Trance Fat (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FwiW0CW2E9I)

Actually, the entire album is pretty good and all the songs can be found on YouTube.

well maybe you should have just used a smiley afterword huh

actually...no don't do that

i don't know, it's not like the word exodus is uncommon or rarely used

and i've decided my favorite album of the year so far, and it's the bug's london zoo. excellent mix of politically-charged dancehall, dubstep and grime. fills a void that has been created by the lack of a good rap/hip-hop album this year

The new Music Tapes (moniker of Elephant 6 veteran Julian Koster of such bands as Neutral Milk Hotel and Chocolate USA) album Music Tapes For Clouds and Tornadoes is now available after some 9 years since his First Imaginary Symphony for Nomad. and it's beautiful. Amazing mix of ambient, psychedelic, freak folk and found sounds. Beautiful stuff. Check out "Nomads (http://hypem.com/track/606674/Our+Sleepless+Forest-Nomads)" for a taste or "White Bird (http://www.last.fm/music/Our+Sleepless+Forest/_/White+Bird)" for you fellow shoegazers.

Also heard the new Of Montreal, which was a huge disappointment after Hissing Fauna. I guess I'll have to come to terms with that being the band's crowning moment since I had similarly ambivalent feelings towards The Gay Parade and Satanic Panic in the Attic. C'est la vie.

You should start, and probably end, with Cumulus Mood Twang. I think this is their only truly amazing record, the rest are either a) bad Stereolab rip-off, or b) only slightly interesting. But with this album, they totally struck sonic-gold.

If you don't already listen to His Name is Alive, you should. Especially their older stuff. This Grouper group sounds a lot like them, so you should totally dig them. Check out:

Livonia, Home is in Your Head, and King of Sweet.

Brilliantly scary, hauntingly beautifulm experimental acoustic-electro-folk.

There is a compilation called Always Stay Sweet that covers the best of their early stuff. I bet you dig it.

Top 10 so far for 2008:

1. David Byrne and Brian Eno - Everything That Happens Will Happen Today
2. Motorpsycho - Little Lucid Moments
3. Daniel Lanois - Here is What is
4. Far Flung - A Wound in Eternity
5. Sun Kil Moon - April
6. Meat Beat Manifesto - Autoimmune
7. Drive-By Truckers - Brighter Than Creation's Dark
8. The Verve - Fourth
9. Breasts - Breasts
10. Black Dog - Radio Scarecrow

Great year for music so far, and who know how many albums I haven't discovered yet.

This album is very awesome. I've been craving some new Sugar Plant-esque tunes, and it totally hits the spot. Perfect fall music, just the right bit of atmosphere for a rainy day.
