Not having seen Marwencol or knowing anything beforehand about the main character's real-life story, I approached this with some trepidation and was soon drawn in by Steve Carrell's beautifully understated performance. But, Zemeckis being Zemeckis, the movie is far more interested in the technological marvel that makes the puppets come to life and in giving us a Hollywood ending than in the psychology of its protagonist. I regard this a failure although not as embarassing as some reviewers seem to think it is.
