I kinda wouldn't be surprised if the original intention had been to make an original property, but the studio eventually asked to retool it to a Vilma story for brand recognition.

In 1960s Siegheilkirchen, a small town in the Austrian hinterland that is steeped in reactionary, ultra-Catholic attitudes, the son of a hard-working innkeeper – known as Snotty Boy to all and sundry – is at odds with the narrow-minded confines of his home town. But his unstoppable talent for drawing gives him an outlet for his discontent as well as entertaining his school mates and exposing the town’s bigwigs in all their ridiculousness to a collective orgy of unashamed laughter, thus saving his beloved, the ravishingly pretty Mariolina, from malicious persecution by a handful of political die-hards.

A top-notch analysis of the parallel character arcs that Glimmer and Catra undergo in season 4 of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, two characters who might seem opposites in several ways and yet end up suffering similar tragic fates. It's a fascinating journey and a testament to this show's fantastic writing (and one of the many reasons why this is a must watch).

The Upside Down River is an adventurous quest in a poetic fantasy world following Hannah’s search for water drops from the Qjar river in order to heal her sacred bird. She’s followed in her hunt by Tomek, a shy boy, whose world is turned upside down when she enters his shop.

The first animated film by celebrated director Yonfan is an exquisite, sumptuously stylized ode to young love, cinema, and the world of 1960s Hong Kong that has earned comparisons to the lush, languorous romanticism of Wong Kar Wai. Set amid the turbulent social unrest of Hong Kong’s 1967 anticolonialist riots, No.7 Cherry Lane unfolds as an almost hypnotic daydream of bittersweet nostalgia and heady eroticism in which a taboo love triangle plays out between a Proust-reading university student, a self-exiled Taiwanese divorcée, and her ravishingly beautiful daughter.

The Criterion Collection has curated a series of arthouse animated features from over the decades that'll be on the Criterion Channel for at least the month of July. In Seville, beautiful, free-spirited Carmen encounters the controlling soldier Don José, as in the opera. But the film will focus on two teenagers who learn that Carmen is fated to be killed by a man who tries to make her fall in love with him. It is described as a “socially committed, feminist” retelling of the classic tale, aimed at eight-year-olds and up.

Prends garde * toi! is set up at Folivari (Pachamama, The Big Bad Fox and Other Tales), the prominent French studio led by Didier and Damien Brunner. Pierre-Henri Leon is co-producing at France’s La Garde Montante. Enticingly, renowned French comics artist Cyril Pedrosa (Portugal) is onboard as art director.

Eras interweave and reality shades into dream in Nayola, a drama that traces the legacy of the decades-long civil war in Angola. Based on the play Black Box by Jose Eduardo Agualusa and Mia Couto, two prominent writers from Portuguese-speaking Africa, the film follows the fortunes of three generations of women from a single family, including the title character.

The Criterion Collection has curated a series of arthouse animated features from over the decades that'll be on the Criterion Channel for at least the month of July. (https://www.criterion.com/current/posts/7437-the-criterion-channel-s-july-2021-lineup?fbclid=IwAR3MhdnCSFZ-tPtwe75lGlmCvGbegtXRe1hA_Gdoos RSR1Wxb6dD-c1diNo)

I've been dying to watch Mind Game and Paprika for so long! There's a LOT more on that list I'm eager to see, too!

I've seen Paprika three times now - a great film but I still don't understand the title character. How does she be? Seems like she's a super-hero type character totally separate from the main story.

On a very surface level, she is a literal superhero since she acts on pure dream logic. And on a deeper one, she is a manic pixie dream girl which is cool in a meta sort of way and probably a bit of a trope deconstruction since by all accounts, she is a way for Dr. Chiba to let loose from her real world serious everyday persona(and the disconfort she must feel about it) and her repressed feelings towards Tokita.

Good character.

Round-up time:

Season 1 of The Owl House is the story of young, quirky Luz, who gets stuck in an alternate, magical world and with the help of eccentric witch Eda, decides to become a witch herself. A bit of a combination of Harry Potter and Little Witch Academia, It alternatively follows and spoofs magical world's tropes, combined with both the character work and humor of Gravity Falls (Creator Dana Terrace worked there) and some pretty solid world building and lore, turning it into a pretty damn enjoyable show, a breeze of a binge (I decided to watch episode 1 to see what was the fuzz only to end up watching the whole season in a day) and one of the better cartoons of the past year. It also has one of my favorite body-switching episodes in quite some very cute, adorable character moments without being saccharine. And S2 so far is very good as well.

Steven Universe (S3-5) just lived up to the hype. Combining solid character moments, world building, humor and maturity, it constantly kept surprising me (the Rose = Pink Diamond twist took me completely by surprise even if, in retrospect, had been well set up) and sometimes even had me on the verge of tears and it ended in a very, very satisfying note. It will be interesting what Steven Universe Future does to keep Steven and the Crystal Gems' story going forward. Also kudos for how inclusive the show was without feeling pandering.
And Peridot is still the best character.

Canadian Netflix mystery show The Hollow (consisting of two 10 episode-seasons) was overall a nice surprise. Beginning with a very intriguing first scene with three kids trapped in an empty room with no doors nor windows while having any memories (I won't give out anything else about the plot, since it relies a lot on that mystery aspect), it kind of feels at first like some sort of a kid-friendly LOST. Season 1 doesn't totally keep this initial momentum, dragging it's feet a little in the middle portions, but ends up in a satisfying, fairly exciting note, enough that it could've end up there, which made the fact that there even was a second season, with the same characters a surprise. Even more surprising that the return of said characters didn't felt gimmicky (which was a real possibility) and it even upped the stakes, added some horror elements, a Jazzy version of Radiohead's Creep and was overall a superior show in every sense. Really fun show overall.

Season 3 of Final Space was unfortunately a little bit of a let down after two very good seasons. It's not entirely without merits, it still has a lot of visual flair and can come up with a very strong episode once in a while, such the season's highlight, an episode in which the Team Squad is invaded by an army of zombie Garys (makes sense in context) which concludes with a very poignant moment which might've been the best acting of Olan Rogers' so far. Unfortunately the show, and in particular this season, feels like it has too many characters that aren't all that interesting (like Tribore) getting a lot of screentime which would've been better used in other more interesting and important characters which it also trickles into some of the show's emotional beats not hitting the way they should and makes the season's narrative feels a bit underdeveloped and convoluted at the same time. It also doesn't help that Ash, this season's de-facto main character, isn't as emotionally compelling as Gary and Little Cato were in the previous two (it would've helped if she had had more scene with, say, Fox. Still, it's not like the show is worth giving up. It still has the sort of ambition you seldom see in other adult animated shows and story-wise has still the potential to surprise (especially after ending on a cliffhanger). I'm not sure if this show will continue (Olan hasn't said anything yet), but I hope it comes back stronger, and for the love of God, give more screentime to MILF extraordinaire Sheryl.

S1 of Tuca & Bertie, just as the first time, took it's time to get going, but closed strong. The Jelly Lakes is a great episode.

Combatants Will Be Dispatched has the misfortune of being compared with KonoSuba (by the same creator), a losing battle since the characters do not have anywhere near the same chemistry of Kazuma and co. Still, it has it's share of laughs while also mercilessly mocking isekai tropes.

Don't Toy with Me Miss Nagatoro's first episode is a bit misleading. It seems like it'll be about poor, nerdy guy just being bullied by the more popular girl Nagaoro... but it quickly dispatches this narrative, instead turning the title girl into a bit of a tsundere and insecure buffoon hiding behind a teasing demeanor. And then it just becomes this horny, hilarious and really sweet series of vignettes. By the end of the season is a seriously wholesome anime and Nagatoro is undeniably best girl. Great show.

Osamake: Romcom Where the Childhood Friend Won't Lose is ruled by idiots. Everyone here is an idiot. It sometimes works and it sometimes doesn't as a comedy. Unfortunately it ends in a somewhat anticlimactic note. So much that it took me like a week to realize that the show ha concluded.

Koikimo: It's Disgusting to Call This Love and Higehiro: After Being Rejected, I Shaved and Took in a High School Runaway were a very interesting double header. Both shows dealing with relationships between young, high school girls and older men, which right from the bat present a whole set of problematic implications and the way they play with this narrative made, for me, one of those shows a standout and the other not so much.

Koikimo deals with Ryo, this womanizer dude, who eventually develops a crush for Ichika, who is his sister's best friend, ten years his junior, but he doesn't seem to mind and starts to pursue her with things unfolding in a more or less straightforward fashion with both together and happily ever after. The is is, this approach makes the show misfire. Instead of coming up like this heartwarming, romantic tale, we ends up with a guy who ends up more often than not coming up as a complete creep constantly harassing a naive girl who by the end ends up falling for him because she knows no better. And no one seems to notice or care about this! Not even the girl's mom! At the end, it is indeed disgusting to call this love, because, yes, this unintentionally comes up as something more sinister.

Meanwhile, Higehiro deals with Yoshida, a 26 year old guy who was recently dumped who one night finds Sayu, a young girl sitting under a lamp post. She seems to not have a place to stay and ends up in this guy's house, convinced that by offering him sex, he'll let her stay for a while. And she stays, and stays for a while. Fortunately though, Yoshida happens to be way less sleazier than expected (by the end of the series, dude's like a grumpy Atticus Finch) and explicitly refuses Sayu's advances. And with this, the show not only ends up avoiding a minefield, but taking more interesting paths, building a friendship very well constructed and wholesome while seeing how Sayu adapts to a new life while dealing with the kind of issues that leave you under a lamp post, all supported by a solid supporting cast. By the end of the road both have gone through their own set of peaks and valleys. Do they end up as friends? As a couple? I won't tell, it's something you've gotta figure out by yourselves, but whatever it is, it's earned.

Okaaaaaaaaay.

I legit thought Smith would coast with some Mattel-Chocobot-Hour style shit. And tbh, that's what the opening 10 minutes of the first episode are ... I almost turned it off, but then the show goes absolutely apeshit. I mean like seriously WTF apeshit.

It's still not in the same league as Noelle's "She-Ra" reboot, which was one of the best contemporary cartoons going, but I'm interested enough to want to see episode #2.

PS: This has Sara Michelle Gellar and Alicia Silverstone in key roles, and I dunno why, but that really appeals to me.

PPS: Sometimes when Skeletor laughs I can hear The Joker.

Fry, have you seen the He-Man reboot yet? I absolutely must know what you thinkI just finished it. It was good overall although the first episode was rough at first... at least right until the twist.
It was a very ballsy twist (it even got the show reviewed-bombed at RT because the internet is full of babies), but it was the right move. Getting rid of Adam and Skeletor (who, were pretty one note for starters) allowed the He-Man the show to actually have stakes, develop compelling characters (Evil-Lyn and Teela are great) and more impressively, made Orko not annoying. The show still has some clunky dialogue and relies a bit much on either exposition or on the audience being already familiar with some of the other characters, but it's still leaps and bounds better than the original show and the final cliffhanger was good. Kevin Smith was a good choice to run this show: he clearly loves the original material, but was also aware of it's shortcomings, knew he had to take risks to elevate it and ultimately his decisions with the story are what gives the show it's pop.

Okaaaaaaaaay..Heh, right before I posted mine:D

I almost turned it off, but then the show goes absolutely apeshit. I mean like seriously WTF apeshit.Indeed! The first episode was almost unwatchable, but that was because, well, exactly the original show, but with better animation. Almost feels as if Smith was baiting us into thinking this would be exactly what most original fans wanted: a remake and that their nostalgia was bullshit.

If you hadn't told me Silverstone was there, I would've never figured out she was there. Lena Headey is probably the best of the cast.

PPS: Sometimes when Skeletor laughs I can hear The Joker. That legit always happens to me when I watch a Hamill role.

I'll have more to say after I finish the last 2 episodes, but I think you're dead-on right here

Watched the 5-episode first part last night. Thought it mostly worked, all goofy charm and sincerity, but it was also very light and way too short even for a first half. Gellar's voice work was kinda hit or miss with me, either too familiar or lacking in weight. Man at Arms was a total badass. I liked the focus away from the usual headliners though. Climax was definitely a shocker but I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes. The studio's style of animation, where frames are sorta "skipped" every few (to save money? dunno), makes things a bit choppy now and then, but the design work was super.

Yeah, I noticed the skipped frames. Not a fan of that.
