Watched Klaus. So lovely to look at and a clever way of explaining Big Red's sorta-backstory, tho I felt some of the voice actors just didn't fit their characters, especially Cusack and Simmons. Took me out of it a bit, but overall it's a strong film.

"Created by Raphael Bob-Waksberg, BoJack Horseman skillfully illustrates the struggles often encountered in the search for meaning. While known more for treading into darker territory, an argument can be made that the show’s exploration of existentialism provides a more optimistic message just beneath the surface of its pessimistic subject matter. This video offers a concise overview of nihilism, existentialism, and absurdism in order to describe how the show incorporates these beliefs in the construction of a pragmatic view of optimism."

A quick rundown of the shows I've finished lately:

Harley Quinn, S1 and 2 were very violent, energetic, darkly funny and had a few emotional moments. The creators watched the Ivy and Harley episode of Batman: TAS like 50 times.

The Seitokai Yakuindomo* OVA's exploits it's vignette-heavy format to tell as many dirty jokes as possible. Literally a show where nothing happens, but that nothing is super horny and entertaining.

Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, S3 manages to up the stakes while remaining very optimistic and wholesome. One of the best animated shows of the year.

The last 5 episodes of Primal, S1 continue the streak of Tartakovsky's mastery of silence, action and visuals and it goes in some wild directions such as a literal zombie episode or the Coven of the Damned which delivers one big gut punch. Another of the year's very best.

From the Animaniacs (2020) thread:

Finished the season. The sense of humor hasn't vanished after 20+ years, the political and pop-culture satire is pinpoint (again, that Tucker Carlson segment *Chef's kiss*) and the energy remains. If there's any sort of gripe is the absence (sans a small cameo) of most of the original characters and I wish they could've kept the gag of the Warners being chased by Ralph in other shorts, but then again, since we only have Pinky and the Brain, I can see why.

I know there will be a second season, but I hope there are really more. I hope Tom Ruegger, the original staff and more of the original can join the new ones and most of all, that Animaniacs remains being as unique and refreshing as always.

Undone, S1 continues the sort of exciting experimentation with storytelling and the animated medium that Raphael Bob-Waksberg and Kate Purdy did with BoJack Horseman, anchored by a thematic tug of war between magic and insanity and the same sort of relatable and realistic characters that are now the norm for those two creators.

Archer, S11 was a welcomed return to basics for the agency formerly known as ISIS. The banter between the cast remains top notch and was funnier than the previous three seasons.

Big Mouth, S4: This show still baffles me a bit. I still admire some of it's ideas about puberty and mental health and yet I still find it's humor borderline lazy, much more hit than miss, and at times distracting from it's most positive aspects.

Twelve Forever, S1: A show about Reggie, an imaginative 12 y.o. girl whose desire to never grow up is so powerful she can access a magical island named Endless where she never has to grow up and where her toys and drawings can be real. It's good at capturing both the imagination of it's protagonist, it's somewhat introverted personality and the conflicting feelings of entering puberty (particularly because it's the POV of a gay character), backed up by an animation style that can be best described as pure candy. The show goes fast and it's fairly entertaining. Solid show overall.

The Spectacular Spider-Man S1 and 2 holds up on rewatches. Not a single episode that isn't excellent, not a character that feels wasted.

Disenchantment, S3: It's still a bit hit-and-miss with it's comedy, but it's worldbuilding remains top-notch. I'm not sure if the creators have an endgame in sight, even with the cliffhangers.

Hilda, S2 is an improvement over the already excellent season 1 and a much more confident season overall. It builds up from it's already rich and wholesome world and adds layers of some very unexpected black comedy, expanding some of the aspects introduced in season 1 such as the witch world and it's a little more bittersweet overall, probably helped by this season leaning more towards original episodes than adaptations of the Hilda GN. The Deerfox is gonna wreck everyone's shit.

Glitch Techs, seasons 1 and 2: Kind of a mix of Ghostbusters, Ready Player 1 and Scott Pilgrim (like, a lot of Scott Pilgrim) featuring a couple of dorks hunting computer glitches who have come to life. One of the protagonists is a video game geek who's sort of an everyman and another is as if you combined Pinky Pie and Mabel Pines into a gamer girl waifu-type (#IWatchedItForThePlot). Overall a pretty decent and fun monster-of-the-week serious with gorgeous animation, somewhat cringy, but mostly tolerable dialogue and tons of video game references (there's even an episode where they have to capture a monster in a Castlevania parody).

Interesting list. A lot of shows I've not seen. Also, this guy needs to watch BoJack Horseman. I might try to do my own list after I finish some shows.

HM: Ducktales - Astro B.O.Y.D. - Good episode, although I would've taken the wrestling episode.
Adventure Time: Distant Lands - Obsidian - Steven Universe and Adventure Time are probably my biggest blind spots when it comes to animation.
Harley Quinn - Harley Quinn Highway - Oof, good one, might make my list.
AJ's Infinite Summer - Football - Never heard of this.

20. Trick Moon - Pilot - Not seen it.
19. Solar Opposites - Retrace-Your-Step-Alizer - Not seen that show yet.
18. Animaniacs - Here Comes Treble / That's Not the Issue / Future Brain / The Incredible Gnome in People's Mouths - Treble feels a lot like old Animaniacs, Issue was a spot on take on Tucker Carlson's lunacy, Future Brain is very solid, Incredible Gnome feels like something out of R&M's Interdimensional Cable. Pretty solid episode overall.
17. She-Ra and the Princesses of Power - Shot in the Dark - Surprised a She-Ra episode is so low. I would've gone for Heart or Save the Cat.
16. Glitch Techs - Settling the Score - Dance Dance Revolution as a kaiju battle! Fun episode, Miko is best girl.
15. Thundercats Roar - Grune - Not seen this show. I thought it had ended a year or two ago.
14. Ballmastrz: 9009 - Don't Let a Big Head Give You the Championship Blues! You Can Do It, Leptons! Try Your Best to Win!! - Why hadn't I heard of this show before?
13. The Simpsons - The Way of the Dog - Wait, The Simpsons? Sounds like the rare Zombie Simpsons episode with heart.
12. Amphibia - Hopping Mall - That final minute is definitely the best thing this show has done so far.
11. The Owl House - Enchanting Grom Fright - Aahh, one of my blind spots. I intend to watch this show by the end of the month.
10. Craig of the Creek - In the Key of the Creek - Not seen this show.
9. The Fungies - New Pam in Town - Not seen this one.
8. Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - The Clothes Don't Make the Turtle - I've not seen it either. I heard this show is really good, though.
7. Hilda - The Fifty Year Night - Fantastic episode, fantastic show. So bittersweet.
6. Big City Greens - Granny Driver - Another one I've not seen.
5. Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts - Mute Eat Mute World - Oh, my god, the three seasons of kipo were released on the same year!?!? Wolf episodes are good episodes.
4. Star Wars: The Clone Wars - Shattered - Not seen this show.
3. Infinity Train - The Tape Car - Not my favorite episode of this show, but it's hard to pick just one given how consistently great IT train is. This episode's combination of lore, character moments and the show's trademark existential dread makes it one of the best of it's season. This episode reminded me a lot of that scene of THX-1138 scene where the Donald Pleasence character tries to talk with that Jesus image. It had that sort of existentialist feeling.
2. Steven Universe Futures - Fragments - I've not seen Steven Universe.
1. The Midnight Gospel - Mouse of Silver - "You cry!!"

Which do you like better? Millennium Actress or Perfect Blue? Or Paprika?Like Like? Probably Paprika (it's the easier to get into for me), though I find myself thinking more often about Perfect Blue's uneasy atmosphere.

Can't go wrong with either of the three.

INVINCIBLE trailer, hour-long adult series launching Mar 26 on Amazon Prime Video. Based on the Skybound/Image comic by Robert Kirkman (also co-creator of The Walking Dead), Cory Walker & Ryan Ottley. Supervising director is Jeff Allen (Avengers Assemble, Ultimate Spider-Man).

And so does this.

Netflix's Carmen Sandiego was damn good. Loved the angular animation style (reminded me of Samurai Jack's and Remi Chaye's), specially in motion, the worldbuilding and the action. I wish the educational info-dumps had been a little more subtle and that the final episode had been longer, but those are minor gripes compared to how tense it was at times. And the last season final season was really strong. Reminded me of Kim Possible in a good way.

Cat spirit Luo-Xiao Hei’s goes on a journey of self-discovery after his home gets deforested by humans. On his search for a new home, he runs into a group of other spirit creatures who take him under their wing with dreams of reconquering the land they say is rightfully theirs. However, the group runs into a human known as Wuxian, who separates Hei from the other spirits. The two go on a journey that teaches Hei to control his abilities as well as forming his own thoughts on whether or not he should ally with the spirits or humans.

Onyx Equinox, S1 took a while to find it's footing, but when it did, it went hard. Great worldbuilding (and from what I knew and have read since, fairly accurate to Mesoamerican mythology), nice animation (very reminiscent of Avatar and The Legend of Korra) and very griping story, particularly in the second half of the season. Violent, bleak, mature.

Fingers crossed for a second season.

Netflix already has a great Noelle Stevenson work, why not make it two?

The second season of Close Enough was funnier than the first one (even with that out-of-context clip that's been circulating on the internet). There's a little less focus on Josh and Emily (the JG Quintel character and his wife), and more screentime for Pearl, the apartment's tennant and Randy, her redneck son, who were mostly an afterthought on S1. It also devotes more episodes to Bridgette and specially Alex (probably the best animated thing Jason Mantzoukas has done), who gets the funniest episodes of the season. Stand outs: an episode in which Alex and Josh go back in time to prevent Alex's divorce, only ending with him fucking himself, a Die Hard spoof and one about a mysterious horse that everyone end up loving.

Two of the three OVA's of Yona of the Dawn, were pure, disposable filler while the third one focuses on Zeno, a character that was literally introduced in the last episode of the first season, and gives him this immortality storyline that reminded me of the Wandering Jew. It's better than the first OVA's, but isn't as poignant as it should be and definitively doesn't make up for the lack of a second season.

I was waiting for the shirt pic to load, was disappointed when it didn't, then realized I never needed a pic in the first place because I already knew 100% what the shirt looked like.

That is interesting, tho her original design and costume in the movie were more or less like the left image shows. She even juts out her chest at bizarre angles whenever possible and contorts her poor waist into, well, cartoonish positions.

And I believe people are making mountains from molehills here. The new design might not be "sexy", but it isn't, like, puritan either. She's a bit toonier, but still clearly with the intention of being seductive and shit (contrast it, for example, the Lola Bunny from The Loony Tunes Show (https://i.pinimg.com/originals/a2/27/ba/a227ba45ff3f32b396f546c1f8af00 6a.gif)). I'm 99% sure that if the new design had been the original one, there still would be an obscene amount of fanart (and porn) of her.

Raya is a lovely piece of work. No points guessing what the overall theme of the movie is when the word is spoken more than 100 times in the script, and some other dialogue is super on the nose, but there's also a lot of genuine feeling in this. It's warm, thoughtful and empathetic. The animation--whether character design, world-building or action--is also terrific. A certain choice made by the heroine at the climax is quite unusual and was just right. Thought this worked really well overall.

I must be crazy, though, cause I thought for a long time that Tiffany Haddish was the voice of the dragon, but she's not. I could have sworn I heard her name tossed around the movie early on. Dunno where I got that impression from.
