IIIIIIIIInteresting. I don't expect this film to match Princess Mononoke (it'd be ridiculously unfair), but if it's half as good as it's animation...

Looney Tunes Cartoons, S1 was funny. The crew was clearly in tune with the classic shorts, particularly Clampett's, and while the timing wasn't quite as perfect as the originals (being fair, that's very hard to do), the shorts wouldn't have felt out of place with the originals (save the different animation style). For the first time in ages, Tweety doesn't feel like an asshole, BTW (he's a little more oblivious than malicious now), and that is an improvement.

If there is a second season, I'm hoping they try to emulate more of Chuck Jones this time, particularly his subtlety and interpretation of characters like Daffy (more of the greedy loser type than the utterly insane one).

This season of Infinity Train is one of the best, riskiest and more rewarding seasons of animation I've seen in years. It better be renewed.

Too literal a view.

It's because of people like Bailey that writers must include inane lines about cell phone reception in their scripts (especially in horror movies). This shit is a shade away from Cinema Sins style inanity.

Oh, the heroes are in trouble! Why don't they just use their phone to text their dad or use google maps or call for help / the cops / triple-A, whatever?

Because it's a movie and it's meant to be a fantasy, not a literal representation of reality, and jesus who cares.

He's absolutely playing it off as a joke but I think his complaint is real. He's aware enough to know it's silly and doesn't want to take shit for it.

I only say this because Bailey takes himself a little too seriously on twitter, isn't often jokey or funny, and several people that know him (such as MZS) took the tweet at face value.

^ Popular Science explains Max Fleischer's stereoscopic rotary process, circa 1939

"Fleischer-patented three-dimensional background effect called 'The Stereoptical Process,' a precursor to Disney's Multiplane. This technique replaced the usual flat-plane, drawn and painted cartoon backgrounds with a circular 3-D scale-model background --- a diorama --- in front of which the action cels were positioned and photographed."

Oh yeah, I watched some things.

To LOVE-Ru, S1 (+ OVA's) is the story of how the life of one kid named Rito gets thrown into chaos when a naive, fun-loving alien princess named Lala literally crashes into his life and accidentally turns him into her fiance. The show is consistently hilarious, packed with fanservice and full of best girls. For the most part, I don't remember individual episodes, since in many of them the plot was left in second place and most of the characters didn't have much of an arc (Rito and Haruna, his school crush, are perhaps the only characters with one, and they're pretty thin at them), instead looking to pack it with jokes, jokes and more jokes. The show succeeds at that.

Aggretsuko, S3, which follows shy, penniless and neurotic Retsuko as she tries to make sense of a life going nowhere still remains just... so... goddamn relatable, dealing with heartbreak, everyday economic struggles and the search for happiness. And Haida, Retsuko's hopelessly in love with the titular racoon girl, gets in my nerves. Dude is, like, my worst parts turned into a character.

The Midnight Gospel is, if anything, very interesting. A combination of Duncan Trussell's podcast about topics such as Buddhist philosophy, mysticism, etc (framed as a space podcast by a man named Clancy) and Pendleton Ward's trippy animation gives us something that, while not 100% coherent, is at least interesting and rewards repeated viewings. Or perhaps, it's more correct to say that, by it's very format, the extra viewings are imperative since the podcast and the animation by themselves are very worth exploring, but, since the animation is more often than not at odds with the interviews, it's difficult to fully appreciate the content of the interviews and the narrative presented by Ward (which ranges from zombie invasions, a princess warrior trying to get revenge for her dead lover, among others)... that is, except for the last episode, the best episode of the season in which Clancy/Duncan talks with his mother, Trussell's real life mother, as Ward's animation presents Clancy and his mother at various stages of life, death and rebirth, all while she reveals to the audience the reason of her interview: she has stage four cancer and realizing this, she contemplates what has been of her life and the meaning of it, as Clancy ponders what it'll be of him when she's gone. It's beautiful as it's heartbreaking.

I honestly don't know if there will be a season 2 or even if it needs a season 2, I just know that as a show it's as unique as it is imaginative and strange. It screams of cult classic.

Infinity Train, Book 3: Cult of the Conductor this time follows Grace and Simon, two passengers in the train who have formed a cult of children dedicated to wreck havoc and increase their number, all while encountering a mysterious little girl named Hazel and her animal companion Tuba.

While this book continues with the blend of whimsical animation, deep lore, themes of redemption and improvement and unexpected instances of heartbreak, it decidedly takes more risks, starting by focusing on two villain protagonists using them to explore themes such as tribalism, discrimination, delusion and grief as the presence of Hazel and Tuba create a wedge between the two, turning one into a more empathetic person and another into a more delusional and violent one. What's more amazing is that the season manages to explore it without making the narrative feel overblown nor leaving any of the themes half-baked. It's some seriously great writing.

As it can be inferred from the previous paragraph, this season goes to some very dark places and doesn't mess around: it's violent, horrifying and unflinchingly sad in places. It's also some of the best animated TV in the last few years and something I could see as a potential flagship show for HBO Max.

I watched the pilot. There's a scene where as Clancy records his interview with the President during the zombie apocalypse, he's helping a woman deliver her baby in a kiddie pool. Very interesting is an understatement.

I love the show's format and have much interest in getting back to it.

1301487213759389697"The story is based upon the Nobel Prize winning novel by Wladyslaw Reymont. ’The Peasants’ is a tragic story of a peasant girl Jagna forced to marry a much older, wealthy farmer Boryna, despite her love for his son Antek. With time, Jagna becomes the object of envy and hate of the villagers and has to fight to preserve her independence. Set in the Polish countryside on the cusp of the 19th and 20th Centuries, the story’s dramatic turns tie into the changing seasons, hard labour in the fields and traditional local holidays."
