The first season of Amphibia was a lot of fun. Following the footsteps of Gravity Falls (Matt Braly, Amphibia's creator, who was a storyboard artist and director on GF), this show is fast paced, full of jokes, bright backgrounds, charming characters and overall very creative. While this season was mostly full of stand-alone adventures, as it goes along, it gives some shades of mystery and a potential long narrative arc (how did Anne got into this Amphibian world? where are her friends? how about the conflict between toads and frogs?).

Overall, it's very good and I'll tune in when it's back.

Kipo and the Wonderbeasts was awesome. Good animation (reminds me of Boondocks), action and a lot of heart. What strikes me the most is how stylish it feels at times and how it embraces black culture, particularly with music withoug feeling gratuitous. One of my favorite sequences is the introduction of Benson: a surface dweller that stumbles into a truck full of soda (2,000 y.o. soda) at the top of an electric tower and goes for a can... but not before he plugs a hip-hop track on his earphones and climbs at the rhythm of the music. Reminded me a bit of Into the Spiderverse when Miles goes to school at the rhythm of the music. There's a certain carefree atmosphere which contrasts nicely with the tense ending of the previous episode.

He's right . Comedy is subjective. And I laughed my ass off during this episode.

I'm a Seth McFarlane fan. I love it when jokes are beat into the ground.

Philip have you seen the Astartes series on YouTube (and other places)? It's a Warhammer 40000-related fan film animation series essentially done by just one guy. It's incredible. Just released a new part in the series. Each part obviously takes quite a while to do. I'm sure he has a patreon to help him.

"For today's video, we are going to examine the moral philosophy of one of the most talked-about cartoons to air recently, Infinity Train. What does this story of the mysterious train have to tell us about morality, right and wrong, and developing into a good person? The ways we each answer these questions for ourselves can tell us a lot about how we come to shape the world."

I was super reluctant to watch this show because I didn't care for what I saw in the art style in previews and trailers, but I gave it a shot and it's terrific. The style totally won me over, and it has some fantastic action. There are some extended sequences that are just superb.

Only watched up to this train arc, which I guess they decided to do a feature-length movie for? Hope the series returns with another season afterward. Also, the shape-shifting villain adopts a guise that is blatantly Michael Jackson for most of the first season and it's kind of hilarious.

Daria, S2 still bangs. The comedy still holds up, the satire still stands and episodes like Write Where It Hurts still pack a mean punch. I wish I didn't have to choose between watching the show in high quality and watching it with the original music.

BEASTARS, S1: I read someone in twitter or youtube summarizing this show as "Zootopia as if it were made by HBO". This feels apt. This show is violent and horny. Still, the subtext of class, nature vs nurture, prejudice and self-repression shine. The opening slaps, so does the show.

gen:LOCK, S1 kind of feels a bit light on substance (most of the characters feel a bit under-cooked, sans the Maisie Williams character), but I'd be damned if it wasn't entertaining as hell. The action is the highlight here and I'm hoping that the following seasons go more in depth and they exploit more it's eclectic cast.

Chihayafuru, S1: This is the story of Chihaya, a girl with a head eternally in the clouds who dreams of becoming a champion of Karuta, a Japanese card game of fast reflexes, sharp listening and Japanese poetry, while longing for a childhood friend, Arata. This season shows those two first met, how she fell in love with Karuta and how later in life she, along with Taichi, another childhood friend and rival of Arata, meet in high school and form a Karuta club, as Taichi completely falls for her, most likely setting up a future love triangle (if she ever finds out about his feelings, because she is a total airhead). For me, this season is at it's best when it focuses on intricacies of the game it self as Chihaya, Taichi and the team they eventually form, learn it and get better at it, with the matches itself full of different strategies and changes of momentum.

Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, S1: At first it took me a while to completely get used to the new animation and while it doesn't look on the same level as GITS: SAC (at times it even looks goofy as hell), the 3D animation allows more fluid movements and smoother camera motion, which works particularly well on the action scenes, which include a chase scene that reminded me a little of Mad Max and some gorgeously choreographed fight scenes. The story this time deals with a post-economic disaster world that has descended into a state of perpetual war (mostly for profit), we have a Section 9 which has disbanded and turned into a team of mercenaries, all while a new type of humans (post-human), with enhanced hacking capabilities, has been creating havoc while the American government tries to cover it up (and most likely find a way to profit from it).

Something this iteration of SAC has done well, at least in comparison of the previous two seasons of SAC, is to tell this story in a clearer, a little more straightforward way without sacrificing the moral ambiguity, social commentary and bleak tone that has made previous iterations of GITS so successful. Overall, this is still really good.

DuckTales (2017), S1: Man, I should've properly watched this show a long time. Not only it is funny, nicely animated and well written, almost all the new iterations of the main characters are better than the original 1987 cartoon (which was already good), particularly Webby who is just awesome. Also, Lena (who, as I recall, didn't really have counterpart in the 1987 version) was a character I really enjoyed, particularly at how vulnerable she ends up being. Best episodes so far? The one in which Lena and Webby go to Scrooge's second secret bin to find his precious dime and the penultimate, a fantastic bottle episode with a heartbreaking ending. On to season 2.

DuckTales (2017), S2 is as strong and funny as season 1, with a cast remaining really strong and with a lot of chemistry. The biggest development being the addition of Della Duck, the long lost mother of the twins and she does not disappoint. She's hilarious, awesome and her determination to get back to her children and learn to be a mother is a welcome addition, while having some very clear flaws which make her a very compelling character and already one of my favorite characters of the show. This show is great.

D-Frag! An anime show about a young delinquent who gets tangled with a game creation club full of crazy women!

After a long while I finally watched the whole thing. At first I struggled to get used to the razzle-dazzle tempo of the show and how crazy the girls are (plus the disconnectedness of each episode), but once I got used to it, it had some very funny moments. Off all the characters, I probably liked Takao the most (and the boob jokes were very funny). By the end of the season (and the OVA), it was starting to remind me a little of Community (but way more over the top).

I have to agree with him. While the revival seasons and movies never reached the insane consistency of the earliest seasons (particularly with it's comedy and satire), the fact the show never lost it's heart and ideas make it still worth watching, from the pilot up until Meanwhile, which remains one of the best series finales I've seen.

Bob's Burgers, S10: By this point Bob's Burgers might not blow us up with epic laugh-out loud episodes, but it still delivers the chuckles, a big, solid roster of characters and one of the loveliest families of television. To see a show that's about to enter it's 11th season showing this consistency and finding ways to keep it's characters fresh and at the same time familiar is a huge accomplishment (just ask the family from Springfield). Also, I demand more Louise and Regular Sized Rudy.

I never did get around to seeing this while I was living in NY. Literally every single clip I've seen of it online gave me vibes of the recent Disney live action remakes, where it just looked like it was put together by people who clearly possessed no understanding of what made the original film actually work. Like, the clips of "Love Is An Open Door" make Anna look like a creepy, pervy aunt more so than a naive lovestruck teenager from the movie, and various clips of Elsa's performances just came across like either the director or the actor (or both) similarly didn't understand the character she was playing, belting out at inappropriate moments of songs and such that completely miss the point of these same moments from the film. Hell, one of the new songs, "Monster", may make for a decent single, but even that song alone is a complete redundancy of the reprise of "For The First Time In Forever", and is as such, literally a waste of time, which I've also heard is the case for a number of the other new songs as well. So with all that uncertainty, and knowing how disappointing and frustrating all of the recent live action remakes have been for me, I just couldn't justify the asking price to see it. Ah well. Maybe if it gets uploaded onto Disney+ like they're doing with Hamilton, I'll finally give it a shot. *shrug*

Interviews with Monster Girls a comedy/harem show taking place in a world in which monsters (demis, as they're called) are now being accepted into society in which a biology teacher who teaches three HS demis and wants to study them, decides to periodically interview them about their everyday lives.

The show is breezy, cute and funny. Hikari (vampire girl) was the definition of kawaii and I appreaciate her love of puns, I like Yuki's (snow girl) combination of shyness covert pervert tendencies (which remind me of some RL friends) and Machi's (dullahan girl) persistent crush on our resident straight man Tetsuo (said biology teacher) is cute as hell.

However, my favorite part of the show is Sakie, a succubi teacher who falls in love with Tetsuo (KANEDAAAA!!!) after finding out her natural (and non-intentional) aphrodisiac powers seem to have no effect on him (they do, he just has a great poker face) I particularly loved this sort of seduction tango between the two: since she refuses to use her succubi powers (in part because she wants him to genuinely love her instead of just activate his lust and because she thinks it doesn't work anyway), she's constantly fumbling on her attempts to get him to like her. This can range from sexy to awkward to heartfelt in a pinch (best summarized in the gif below). I ship those two. Hard. I also hope we get another season of this show down the line.

I haven't finished it, but I like it. Anything that keeps a show by the BoJack crew alive makes me happy.

Also, has this ever happened before? A Netflix show getting picked up by a cable network? Usually things like this happen the other way around.

The early episodes lean fairly heavily on the "kids' show" aspects, but it grows and matures into a much better place over the course of the show, while still managing to be super fun and entertaining.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DsHthYJdzw
From the Fire Nation to Ba Sing Se, the world mourns the sudden passing of Avatar Korra. Just days ago, an apocalyptic surge of spiritual energy erupted in the heart of Ba Sing Se. The light of the blast was visible for miles, leading analysts to estimate that it was at least ten times the magnitude of the explosion that opened the Republic City Spirit Portal.

Officials have released few details to the public, but dozens of eyewitnesses say the Avatar redirected the energy skyward in a legendary feat of energybending. Because of Avatar Korra, the walls of Ba Sing Se still stand, and millions of innocent lives have been spared. Her sacrifice will never be forgotten.

The future is uncertain, but Korra's spirit lives on. The cycle continues.

Monster Musume: Everyday Life with Monster Girls, a show in which a guy, thanks to a new law ends up living in a house with several monster girls who are in love with him is super ecchi, silly and damn fun, featuring a bunch of girls who are , well, best girls, specially Centorea, a tsundere and somewhat shy centaur girl who also is, like a knight. The 2 OVA's are just a sex scene away from being hentai shorts; still very funny.

For me, this season is at it's best when it focuses on intricacies of the game it self as Chihaya, Taichi and the team they eventually form, learn it and get better at it, with the matches itself full of different strategies and changes of momentum.https://i.imgur.com/WIQYoCY.jpg
Chihayafuru, S2 begins a little slow, mostly focused on introducing new characters Akihiro, a talented, but reckless newcomer to first syllable Karuta and Sumire, a recently dumped 1st year who initially gets in the school's Karuta club to chase Taichi and eventually gets hooked by the game itself. They are two welcomed additions to our main team and allow to explore further several facets of our original staff, particularly Taichi's unrequited crush on Chihaya and Destomu's embrace of strategy and analytics (that's right, a card game has a guy freaking Moneyballing the competition) even at the expense of of some of his teammates' trust. However, the season takes steam by the fourth episode by which the season becomes focused on Karuta tournaments almost non-stop (sans a recap episode a little after the middle), first with team regionals, followed by nationals and an individual tournament. This stretch of episodes is almost scary in how efficiently written it is, constantly setting up elements like Taichi's sheer bad luck, Desktomu's analytical expertise and Akihiro's almost counterintutive drive to play in tournaments (even when it hurts his team), and of course, Chihaya's further development as well as setbacks as a Karuta player and continuing crush on childhood friend and Karuta extraordinaire Arata. This season delivers in all fronts.

Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, S2 was just as fun, sweet and magical as S1 promised and a welcome expansion on the world and characters. I'll call it, Scarlemagne heel-face turn.

RWBY, Volume 7 is arguably RWBY's best season since Volume 3, aided by the show finally having a more apparent endgame, teams RWBY and JNR together and the villains working for a clearer goal than previous seasons. Arthur Watts is great as the season's big bad; his cold and calculating nature was a good change of pace from Tyrian's crazy, but almost random villainy (who we still got), Hazel's anti-villainy and Cinder's decline. He might not be the physical threat the others are, but villains like him just feel more difficult to beat and, oddly more satisfying. Meanwhile, Ironwood had a great seasonal arc, ranging from knight templar to well-intentioned villain and he seems prime for a fall.
And finally Penny's triumphant return + Ren and Nora finally being canon made me jump of joy. Lot of great stuff here and I cant wait for Volume 8. And of course, the action remains top-notch. Watts vs Ironwood, Team RWBY vs the Ace-Forces and finally, Crow vs Tyrian vs Clover were the season's highlights.

F is for Family, S1 is for the most part okay. The humor is hit and miss, and while crude, it doesn't seem lazy and getz better as time goes by. The best things this show has so far, is that it doesn't shy from showing consequences and that it has heart.

Others I'd consider: She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, The Dragon Prince, Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, Tuca & Bertie, Final Space and DuckTales.

And Infinity Train should be for short form.

I'm on the final episodes of season 3. It's really good.Man, those final three seasons of F is for Family put me through the fucking wall. Loved specially when the show was just going full dramedy and most important, the huge refusal to even have a status quo, unless you mean everything being fucked as that.

Princess Connect! Re: Dive (S1) based on a videogame I know nothing about, it's a story about Yuki, a mope who wakes up with no memories in a Medieval/Fantasy/video game-like world, where he ends up forming a party with three girls: Kokkoro, an elf who is, like, subservient to Yuki, Pecorine, a peppy and super strong girl with big boobs and a bigger stomach and Kyaru, a cat girl who is, like, the biggest tsundere with Pecorine and who's secretly (and reluctantly) plotting against the group.

Although I heard people comparing it to Isekai comedy Konosuba, Princess Connect is by far a more kind-hearted show which might not bring out the laughs of KonoSuba, but it's still pleasant and has a warmth that KonoSuba doesn't. It also steadily improvs through the season (the last two episodes, specially, which were very good). Everyone could use some more characterization (specially Yuki who never goes beyond Forrest Gump if he were brain dead), but it at least contains a fair share of best girls particularly Pecorine and Kyaru (I hope they become a couple. It's clear this is where it's going, don't be cowards show creators).

Domestic Girlfriend, S1 is the story of a high school guy, who, trying to get over a crush he has on his teacher, goes to a mixer, meets a cute, but odd girl and has casual sex with her. However, things get messy once his dad decides to remarry and oh surprise! Turns out he's remarrying the mom of that odd girl and the teacher he's crushing about. All of this followed by tons of twists and turns, love triangles and sex (the uncensored version is on the verge of being a vanilla hentai).

As you can see, the premise is sketchy as shit (I even had flashbacks to The Graduate in mind when writing this), and prone to tons of melodrama; however it's for the most part well executed with characters that are on the limit of being grounded and over the top soapy, which makes the drama more engrossing (hell, whether you think this show is engrossing or utter shit, it's impossible not to keep watching), even if the leads are for the most part, very selfish and the show's message (If it has one) is quite a muddled message.

It also has a an OP which is straight up fire.

FLCL Alternative, the third installment of the popular cult anime now focusing on the misadventures of Kana, a high school who spends most of her days hanging out with her three friends Mossan, Hijiri and Pets until she crosses paths with Haruko and the craziness that comes with her.

Unlike FLCL and FLCL Progressive, Alternative is a little more of an ensemble show, not only focusing on Kana, but also giving an episode centered on each of her friends as their friendship begins to quickly change as they enter adulthood, face weird alien shenanigans and end up in the middle of Mecha fights. The show is fast paced, quirky, fun, beautifully animated and ends with an appropriate mind screw. The only thing I miss (which Progressive also lacks) is the wild, almost out of control experimentation of the first installment. For the most part, the wild swings in mood, atmosphere and animation styles are gone, replaced with a little more clarity. While still is a good watch, that FLCL uniqueness is just not quite there.

I honestly don't have much to say about Close Enough, S1, except that it is really funny. Although it was obvious after watching Regular Show, J. G. Quintel's humor lends itself really well to adult humor and the newfound freedom of HBO hasn't stiffled his creativity and voice. Can't wait for season 2.

SPOILER WARNING FOR SEASONS 1-6 OF BOJACK HORSEMAN
"The Old Sugarman Place is my favorite episode of BoJack Horseman. This story comes on the heels of Sarah Lynn’s untimely death, at a point where the audience and BoJack are both grieving, and fittingly, grief is what is explored so thoroughly in this episode. Primarily through the eyes of BoJack, Honey Sugarman and Eddie the Dragonfly, we take an in depth look at the many ways death and grief can break us, and the ways that improperly dealing with that grief can have major long term effects on us and those we love. Enjoy this breakdown of this masterpiece from BoJack Horseman season 4."
Nice breakdown of one of my favorite episodes.
