Watched Arcane on Netflix. I have no investment in League of Legends in any way other than watching the cinematics. Thought the show was pretty good. Some tropey business mixed with some unexpected character work (I liked the antagonist's relationship with his adopted daughter). It usually looks good and is animated well but man....I just can't get on board with the overall style. Every aspect is just maxed out on design all the time and it's kind of exhausting. I love fantasy high or low, and the worldbuilding is fine if a little pat at times, but it's just like a never-ending visual assault of hip steampunk weirdness. I'm sure for others it's exactly what they want, but it's just lacquered on too much for me. And I didn't really care for unstable Pippi Longstocking/Joker mashup in Jinx. If they do another season, I'd prob watch it though. There's enough that I did like to want to see where it goes. Good voice acting.

Despite its reputation and popularity, Wolf Children seems very hard to find online. There's a cool collector's edition BR but it costs $40. Today I said screw it and just bought it. Seems like a solid addition to my collection, and to this point Hosoda hasn't let me down.

I would also like to watch Galaxy Express 999 and Tekkonkinkreet, but am having a hard time finding them. I did find a decent subbed version of Gauche the Cellist just sitting on youtube recently, so that was nice.

What I've come to expect and love in Hosoda's films is a story detailing profound individual growth. Wolf Children did something different. It showed me a single parent making the best of it. I haven't found many, but I thought there was some subtext in The Case of Hana & Alice (Shunji Iwai, 2015) and Liz and the Blue Bird (Naoko Yamada, 2018). Both movies are really good as well. Oh, and I guess When Marnie Was There (until the twist, that is).

EDIT: The first two segments of Happy-Go-Lucky-Days (Takuya Satō, 2020) have more than subtext, but with different flavors. The first being fairly wholesome and the second, kinda... unsettling perhaps? The movie overall isn't great, though.

Starting the new season of Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 and while I'm still not a fan of the new CGI look, at least the first two episodes feel like they've justified that decision because there are a couple of action set pieces, specifically a car chase and a fight scene involving Paz and the Major that are incredible. Pitch perfect geography, camera angles and motion, coreography and pacing that definitely would've been extremely difficult if not ouright impossible to do in 2D.

Alright so I finally finished The Venture Brothers. Based on how Season 7 ended they definitely need that movie to wrap things up. Rankings and ratings to follow later plus eventual blog post I'm currently writing, yet I think it's one of the best shows Adult Swim ever put out. Also I'm fine with the show ending 7 seasons is more than enough.
