It's not like this movie is actually bad but it doesn't have much to offer beyond another excellent performance by Joaquin Phoenix and the animations of Callahan's actual cartoons which are pretty great - I wasn't aware of his work and I thank Van Sant for showing it to me but that's where my appreciation for this stops. I squirmed a lot during the recovery scenes because paralysis is actually one of my deepest fears but that's about it for me.

By the way, this was originally supposed to star Robin Williams.
