Per Entertainment Weekly. (https://ew.com/movies/2019/01/15/new-ghostbusters-movie-jason-reitman/)

Yep, much like the 'busters will likely pass on the positron colliders to a new generation, so has Ivan Reitman passed the directing torch to his own son, Jason Reitman. Reitman, as you know, is the director of Thank You For Smoking, Juno, Up In the Air, Young Adult, and Tully. Along with a few movies that we all collectively agreed to

Will the 'busters suit up again? (Doubt it.)

Will the new teenaged heroes find a role in the busters' universe? (Probably not.)

Will I go see this out of some misconceived sense of obligation due to how much I enjoy the original film and how much I sorta guiltily like the first sequel and how much I politely tolerate the story in the video game and how much I do not actively loathe the recent remake? (Yep.)

Take us out, Nick Cicierega.

Literally the worst outcome possible.

(Never get tired of that Nick Cicierega track, tho.)

The Ghostbusters universe is big enough to hold a lot of different stories

No, it's really not. FFS.

The worst part about this is all the shit talk it'll generate online, mostly from insufferable redpillers and MRAs.

I don't think it'll get the outcry from redpillers/MRAs; it looks like the studio is ignoring the last film (full of female heroes) and instead basically doing what fans wanted by placing this story in the universe of the original films and "passing the torch."

And they'll probably be reassured due to the fact that this is not Reitman's first involvement with this film series:

[Don't get me wrong, there will be shit-talk, but the volume will be lower.]

No, I meant that they will interpret this as a "win." Remember that Angry Nerd Critic (or whatever his name is) who refused to review the Feig version based on principle? He will be all over this news, crowing about it.

So will every other neckbeard asshat on YouTube.

"See? We were right all along and the studio agrees ... blah blah blah."

My God, just think of all the dumb memes hitting the front page of Reddit over the next 2 years. Ugh.

Got it, and yeah, agreed.

One wonders what the reaction will be when this movie is not good.

Well this'll make everyone happy this time!

The LadyGhostbusters movie had some good moments in it but was mostly a harmless bit of flopsweat. It was so okay that it didn't deserve even a tiny percentage of the energy catapulted at it from every side of the culture war.

Wait seriously. They had this much insight they made a teaser for it?

Guess it's kind of like a proof-of-concept teaser.

Three left and they're all 66+.

Maybe the LadyBusters will be capturing their ghosts.

I'm sure this will be just as harmless but average as the last one.

The best thing about the all-female version was Chris Hemsworth, but I’m probably just being sexist and stuff :)

That last one looked pretty terrible guys. And I can't say I know anyone who actually liked it for the end result except for some that loved Mackinnon.

Looks like a much more earthbound Ghostbusters, or at least the teaser suggests it.

This looks like a generic PG-13 horror movie.

Is the original cast not involved?

Wryan
12-09-2019, 03:53 PM
Several in the original cast are involved. May be extended cameos or may be involved in the full second half of the movie, after the kids start throwing out proton pack energy around town.

Irish

Extremely weird they wouldn't advertise against that in the first trailer.

I've seen people on twitter arguing over the trailer and I can't understand why.

One of the more surprising aspects of the last 10 years of pop culture bullshit is discovering how heavily invested some folks are in this boring non-franchise.

Skitch

I've been surprised by this as well. I mean, I know it has its fans, but the vitriol is wild. I dig all three films so far, but not with any passion I would even banter with anyone about pro or con. Theyre fun and harmless.

This franchise should just be ended like the Alien and Terminator franchises. Anything that comes in the future will only taint what existed before.

Yeah, my thought while watching is, did they just gritty up Ghostbusters? Or maybe not so much gritty as sentimental/reverent, we'll see.

They were stepping through it like a Conjuring movie.... like... we know the title of the movie is Ghostbusters so we assume there's going to be ghosts to go after. You don't have to play up the mystery.

Yeah someone make a post so I can offer mild but earnest praise. Hell I'll do it myself here.

This is kind of great actually. Better written and acted (Coon and Grace are wonderful) than I expected. Didn't go in looking for dramatic heft; didn't expect it to work well for me. Consistent hum of humor that mostly works, but works quietly--not really a lot of giant guffaws here. The cameos from Wilde and Simmons are fun if short. It was perhaps inevitable that they would sorta semi-remake the first GB movie here with regard to the Greatest Hits beats. What surprised me, though, was how the lamest and most lukewarm part was actually when the boys show up. Aykroyd seems to have forgotten how to act, and Murray's Venkman shtick is as dusty and ancient as he looks. While it was lovely seeing Hudson and Weaver again, it felt meaningful that this part didn't really work, as if the universe is gesturing broadly to the squalling pissbaby fanboys and saying, "It's time to let this go, y'all". Your mileage will vary tremendously with ghost Egon. I didn't want it and don't really respect it, but goddammit it worked on me. Thought it was handled well and was not unearned given the movie's other themes. Mawkish as hell, but I'm a soft touch. If they want to spin this off into a new chapter of movies, stick with the youths and don't let Coon and Rudd go.

Everything the Red Letter Media guys have been complaining about since The Force Awakens. Their review doesn't disappoint. Mckenna Grace innocent tho! She's great!

Solid first hour, completely undone by the ending. I don't understand the purpose of Paul Rudd's character beyond romantic interest. I thought they hit it off with a superb child cast and then they ran to cover by just turning it into a CGI recreation of the first movie. The J.J. Abrams curse of reboots, I guess. So it's still a bad movie, but with some interesting ideas for half of its runtime. Make of that what you will.
