This is the first post-Netflix streaming service I'm actually interested in.

Ivan Drago

The only thing that will get me to commit to this streaming service is if it has the majority of Fox Kids' catalog from the 90s--and that's actually in the realm of possibility.

But until then, nah, I'm good.

Yeah unless they have something that really appeals to me I will pass. I already use three pay streaming services and a bunch of free ones. Disney should have done this years ago.

I'm waiting for the stumble.

Disney's post-Walt flush maps roughly onto strong leadership. (Ovitz and Eisner in the 80s and 90s, Iger in the 2010s).

But the company might be in trouble once Iger retires and there's a vacuum at the top. He's been trying to leave for a few years now and AFAIK they still don't have anyone to replace him.

MadMan

It's weird how under Eisner Disney seemed mortal, or weaker. Now they are hell bent on owning everything. Pixar really gave them a boost.

I'm left wondering what streaming services this will hinder to the point of killing. Netflix, Warner, and Apple+ for sure, but Shudder? Amazon? Sorry, but it's hard to get out of doomsday mode over here.

So that's why I don't have the incentive to cave on this yet. . .but I can't say I'm not tempted by The Simpsons, the Stargirl movie (don't judge me; loved the book) and DARKWING FREAKIN' DUCK.

EDIT: Also there's plans for a bundle with Disney+, ESPN+ *and* Hulu. That's an enticing enough offer to quit cable if the Mouse Ears still let Hulu offer live TV.

Irish
04-14-2019, 01:47 AM
I don't think it will hinder anyone.

Netflix is too established. Amazon is too big. Services like Shudder are so niche that they don't compete directly with Disney. (Unless you take Reed Hastings'the view where everything online is competition.)

I'm wondering how they're gonna brand and market the service post-merger. Will it be like Netflix, where kids-stuff is segregated into a different menu and subsystem?

How are they gonna attract college boys who want to watch "Deadpool" without pissing off the soccer moms want to play "The Little Mermaid" for the their toddler?

Ezee E

Is Amazon's service succeeding? Seems like all the other ones to me.

Is Amazon's service succeeding? Seems like all the other ones to me.

I think so. Even without the free videos I still find it valuable to watch movies that are still in theaters or got limited release. I bought Dragged Across Concrete on Amazon for $6. And I didn't even pay $6 for it because every time I buy something on Amazon, sometimes I defer the 2 day shipping and they give me $1 digital credit every time I do that.

Netflix has a great customer base, but I find myself watching it less and less lately.

Essentially the same thing they are doing with Florence Pugh ushering in a new Black Widow.

That's not really the same thing. He's talking about stand-alone theaters doing their own booking, not Fathom, which is owned by Regal and AMC.

Side note, went to Fathom's "TCM Big Screen Classics" 30th Anniversary showing of Glory last night and it looked and sounded atrocious. Extremely low image resolution combined with digital artifacts, jumps, and errors throughout the first ten minutes. And the sound was like a half-second out of sync with the picture. Such a waste of time.

Yeah and even then, they started sending out prints again shortly after that development. The arthouse theater I'm a member of got the 4K restoration of Alien and a 35mm print of Aliens from Fox, and they'll be screening them this coming weekend.

Exemptions are repertory-only, nonprofits, universities, museums, and free or outdoor screenings. Apparently the only individual 20th Century Fox title exempt from Disney's commercial repertory screening ban is Rocky Horror. Fathom Events is its own thing & is not affected."

We presented The Simpsons in 16:9 aspect ratio at launch in order to guarantee visual quality and consistency across all 30 seasons. Over time, Disney+ will roll out new features and additional viewing options. As part of this, in early 2020, Disney+ will make the first 19 seasons (and some episodes from Season 20) of The Simpsons available in their original 4:3 aspect ratio, giving subscribers a choice of how they prefer to view the popular series.

I've always been a pretty big Disney fan, growing up with it. Same with the Marvel universe. I've had Disney+ since it came out and I'm liking it pretty well so far. The new Jeff Goldblum show is kind of cringy but I do love the man so I'm following up with it. It's almost like "How it's made" but with Jeff. And we've been keeping up with The Mandalorian, really well done show. Why can't the producers/directors of that work on the new Star Wars movies that are turning into crap? The Last Jedi was awful... but that's a whole other conversation. It's nice they have a everything on Disney plus. Old, old movies and shows, even the shorts and old Mickey cartoons. I agree to the above, it's definitely nice for nostalgia.

Weak offer. That's a little more than a $1 per month savings against a whopping 3 year commitment, on an untested service.

Agreed. Might as well pay monthly instead of months at a time when you're not getting a huge discount. I'm still having glitches with mine here and there, they really should have focused more on a beta or something. Bah.

I don't know what you're definition of a movie is here. It's filmed literally on stage with an audience.

There are elements filmed of what appears to be rehearsal runs and closeups to give the appearance of multiple camera angles. It has a running time of 2 hours and 40 minutes.

But it's not by the standard definition, a film.

Ah, I see. So I suppose it's ineligible for Oscar consideration, for instance. Metacritic has it categorized under "movie"--I guess that's simply because this is the first time a theater recording has been so popular.

Is Hamilton on Disney+ a movie?

Yes it's a movie, but I wouldn't say it's a narrative feature. I'd say it's a documentary, along the lines of a concert film like Stop Making Sense. But, I say this only because it was intended to play in movie theaters. Otherwise it'd be a TV special.

The Academy has disqualified it because apparently in their documentary rules there's something that prohibits a straight-forward documentation of a live performance without some sort of alteration or outside element included.

I wouldn't have thought there was any consideration of any of the actors being nominated or the screenplay, etc. But I was surprised to see it disqualified from documentary (and Best Picture) consideration.

It was filmed over three separate performances, one of which was without the audience, just for the closeups. So, I don't know... They do keep calling it "Hamilfilm" colloquially.

From what I've gathered, they were well on their way to being done (or even all the way done) with their original batch of filming before the pandemic shut things down. The balance was/is being shot with small crews on those LED stages they've been using. Seems like lots of production that takes place on stages/studio lots has ramped back up in LA.

Fly-by-night marketing companies always claim they have viewership numbers, but they're always full of shit.

And the author here made up her own metrics to arrive at this imagined Disney "windfall," pulling total viewership numbers out of her ass. (Besides which, $261MM would be an absolute disaster for a movie with an estimated budget of $200MM.)

Dukefrukem

Ezee E

If it's $261M on Disney+ without theater exhibition, and considering everything Covid, that's pretty amazing, since it's been... two weeks?

Irish
09-18-2020, 09:35 PM
They sold the movie at a premium, though, so even the fabricated box office isn't impressive. $260MM at their price point is an audience of 8 million.

Network TV shows such as "NCIS" pull better audience numbers every week. "Game of Thrones" and "Walking Dead" habitually attract twice as many.

For another comparison, "Troll's World Tour," which debuted last spring, had an audience of around 5 million over the same time period.

This is my take on it. I find it very unappealing to be bombarded with content like this.

Look, I'm all for 3-4 Marvel movies a year. But now we are getting something like Marvel 5-10 times a year. And these aren't 2 hour blockbuster movies. They're 6-8 hours long series (unless they pull a Mandalorian and make each episode 32 minutes). The excitement is totally gone.

Well I'm more interested in the Marvel shows than the SW ones. Those three trailers look promising.

Of all the projects that were announced yesterday, only Children of Blood and Bone, Star Wars: Visions (Star Wars getting the anime treatment? Sold!), Lightyear, What If and Iwaju pique my interest. Marvel and Star Wars are fun, but Disney and all its brands don't appeal to me.

I was surprised by the Marvel lineup. Lot of items I've never even heard of. I'm no comic book guru by any stretch but at least I've usually heard of the characters. I think I could swing either way on such characters. Maybe I'll really love it since I'm so unfamiliar with them. Maybe I'll be meh on it for same reason. Who knows. I'll watch em lol

Yeah, they have some on Disney+. This came out today, seems very classical Disney true story sports stuff along the lines of Remember the Titans or The Rookie, but without a big star.

Some friends of mine shot all the football stuff, which is cool, though I doubt I'll watch the movie.

What's an example of an original Disney movie? Like Flight of the Navigator? Pirates of the Caribbean? I hear they are making a Jungle Cruise movie? lulz.

Almost anything on this list that isn't a live action remake of an animated movie.

This is new too. More Marvel. What is sounds like to me is some kind of off-shoot area where they can dump one-off episodes to fill in the gaps that may or may not be worthy of telling a whole series story.

The first two episodes of Marvel Studios: Legends, featuring Wanda and Vision, premiere on January 8, 2021, only on Disney+.

Now that I've tried Mandalorian season 2 episode 1, which has huge explosions and Mandalorian on worm action, it is super dissapointing how muted the Dolby digital 5.1 is, with scant little surround activity and a crushing Lack of bass. Fair enough, it is a streaming service, but Netflix seems to do it better on that front. The HDR Dolby Vision video is equally muted, especially during indoor scenes. It's not bad of course and depends on what one is used to. I have a LG OLED of 65 inch and I've seen eye popping 4k discs, and what Disney+ serves up seems sub-par. Purely based on what little I've seen so far. But other Reports are online also. So still happy with Disney+ but that they advertise DD 5.1, Dolby vision and UHD on actual content has a somewhat nasty ring to it.

I'm not really complaining here, but I havent seen any streaming that comes close to a bluray. From the opening Universal theme of a bluray its instantly noticeable that physical is better in sight and sound.

And that's not even 4k! I'm not even there yet.

And Skitch, Meg, The Black Hole is on there in HD. ;)

Looks like the bluray version. Image is solid, lightyears beyond what we used to have. And super Nice this has got the overture since it was missing from earlier versions of the blu-ray, or to be more precise, Hidden from users.

What's super weird but cool is that the black hole has more bass and more pronounced surround activity than Mandalorian. Lol.

Pretty much confirmed coming to Disney+

Disney’s CEO Bob Chapek says the release pattern of Black Widow will be a “last-minute” decision, a sentiment that won’t reassure movie theater owners or others rooting for a Covid-19 rebound.
