View Full Version : Pimp a Product...Bash a Product

Just wanted to start an ongoing thread for matchcut consumers.

Any random product that's exceeded expectations, a brand that was better than another, or a brand/product that has been a complete piece of shit will do.

Pimp: I love XM radio for my car. Highly recommend any music lover look into a purchase. Great diverse selection of channels, and you can see who you're listening to on screen. You don't have to wait for the crappy DJ to tell ya who you're listening to or look it up online later. Only about $10 per month, it's a great investment if you drive to and fro work every day. I will never listen to regular radio again.

Bash: Not a fan of retractable dog leashes. Feel like my arm will tear out of the socket if my dog sees something and catches me off guard. My wife fell face first on the sidewalk while walking my pit with a retractable and that was the end of that. I've never been comfortable with the narrow leash, or the cumbersome handle, either. Those things stink.

Pimp: Puffy Cheetos

Bash: Regular Cheetos

That's all I got right now.

Pimping: Hulu.com. Free, legal television shows and movies online. It has allowed me to catch up on the third season of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. It's an easy site to navigate, and I haven't encountered any bugs thus far.

Bashing: Youtube.com. Ever since Google purchased the site, it's been steadily declining in quality. It's hard to find what you're looking for, and stuff that's even remotely in violation of copyright vanishes far too quickly. There are many other alternative video sites that are flying under the radar, making my trips to YouTube scarce.

Pimp: Ghirardelli 72% Cacao dark chocolate - the only way chocolate was meant to be eaten. Dark and ever so sublime.

Bash: Target's Home Collection Etagere - This is meant to go over the toilet to provide some storage for bathroom stuff. This thing smells awful. The cardboard has some sickly sweet odor. And the little fasteners for the screws are way too flimsy. I broke two of them, and found out it comes with NO spare parts. How do I get spare parts? E-mail the manufacturer, who happens to be an obscure Taiwanese company where nobody speaks English. So, it just wobbles. And smells bad.

Pimp: In & Out. Not earth shattering, but burgers at least meet expectations.

Bash: White Castle. Disgusting.

Pimp: Nerds Rope (benefit of my job is we sell Nerds Rope and when their coming up on expiring within a month they mark them down. I just bought 40 of them for a total of $3.)

Bash: Monster energy drink (They were giving them away for free at the Hoop it Up tournament i played in this weekend and me and my teammates agreed they were disgusting)

Yes.

Have you had Nerds jelly beans? Oh man are they good. They're like little bite-sized Nerds ropes.

An awesome toddler. Is that one of these hybrid ones I'm reading about, Russ?

If I had the money, I think I'd totally do that.

Nah, it's not a hybrid, runs on gas. It's designed for city living/driving, but runs fine on the highways (not a holiday car, no room for suitcases, etc). Still, sticker price of $13.5k, gettin' about 50 mpg, costs a little over twenty bucks to fill up and runs me for at least a couple of weeks or more.

Get one and prepare to be inundated with stares, questions, gawkers, et al.

Great selection, and even with the currency exchange and international shipping, I usually save money compared to buying stuff in-store here in Canada.

Bash: http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/5484/amazoncack3.jpg

Smaller selection, half the stuff is "Unavailable" or "Sold out indefinitely", and they don't use the protective bubble packaging so everything comes all banged up.

Yeah, there's a dude with a Smart Car in my 'hood, and I asked him what he thought about it, and he said it was OK for his needs, but it's really limited. I said I bet you get asked about it a lot. He goes "uh huh", in a way that implied I was a jerk for asking him about it too.

It reminded me of that time I was in an elevator with my headphones on and this lady asked me if I wore headphones just so people would leave me alone. I said "yeah, sometimes" and she said "does it work?" and I said "I guess not" and gave her 'the look'.

Anyway, his car window has been smashed like 4 times over the past 18 months. Sucks for him.

Bash: ESPN.com - Pop up ads, automatically streaming video and their interesting articles are only available to paid subscribers.I agree with this 100%. I hardly visit ESPN.com anymore, where as over the years I've found myself using Yahoo Sports more and more. If Bill Simmons ever moves to Yahoo Sports the switch will probably be complete.

I like the snidely condescending title of "smart" car.

I'm going to pull up next to one of those things in my 12MPG Mustang and drive circles around it. Just because I can.

Pimp - Apple Tech Support. Saved my ass on more than one occasion.

Bash - Adobe Tech Support. Long times on hold, multiple transfers, and ultimately, dead ends. Their support of Macromedia Breeze (renamed to Adobe Enterprise Connect when they bought Macromedia) was so horrid we dropped the product.

I guess mine is comparable to the Coffee Bean/Starbucks debate. GT is alright, but pales compared to the syruppy goodness of Rock Band.

I'm just used to eating the regular parboiled long cooking rice. I tried this stuff and, in comparison, it just seemed so artificial and nasty-tasting.

I use my Oster Food Steamer every night to do up some brown rice. I think the stuff we're using right now is California brown rice or something like that. Gonna check out one of them thar co-op style hippie stores for other types of brown rice.

Pimp: iPhone - Easily the most useful gadget I've bought in a while. Edge transfer for internet browsing is sort of slow but nothing I wasn't used to with the Blackberry. Once I discovered the poker room at the Borgata has free wifi access while at the tables, all was well... phone/movies/music/browsing = hooray.

Bash: iPhone - Why is there no flash support in the Safari browser? Why can't I connect to network file shares over wifi? Why is there no MicroSD slot for expandable storage? Why is there no cut/paste? And most importantly, why do my fairly expensive Shure earbuds not fit in the god damn jack?

Pimp: Freshdirect.com - High quality groceries that deliver at ridiculously convenient times. Only going to be home at 10pm on a Wednesday? No problem. Bottle of Shiraz and block of Gruyere? Done. I love them.

Bash: Etsy.com - It's been my goto place for original pieces of art for a while now, but the cataloging on the site sucks, and as it grows in popularity, it's nearly impossible to find what you're looking for without manually eyeballing 9000 different listings. It needs a major search engine overhaul if it wants to stay viable.
