I've been trying to pimp these films in the film discussion thread for a while now but they keep getting buried, so I made the thread. I'll add to it whenever I see something I never or rarely hear mentioned around these parts. I'll also probably add photos/blurbs in a bit but for now I just want to get these names out there.

Very Good:

My Friend Ivan Lapshin (Aleksei German)
Brighton Rock (Boulting)
Kin Dza Dza (Georgi Daneliya)

Your tastes are far too obscure. Broaden (or limit) your horizons!

Your post is probably tongue in cheek, but... that's the whole point of the thread! I want to get those super rare great film titles out there. Also I didn't really make it clear in the first post but everyone else is welcome to post their great hidden gems as well.

It's all good, just discovered him yesterday actually and I'm already blown away. Any streamers for Mermaid that you know of?

couldn't find it. I'm actually surprised that all these Petrov and Norstein stuff came out, Tale of Tales is also available. Searching further i've found lots of russian and czech animation on you tube that wasn't available before. Hope it doesn't get pulled off, independent animation is so hard to watch outside festivals.

Petrov's technique of animation is one of the most painfully difficult of them all, he's an outstanding painter.

Here's one: Canadian photographer/filmmaker Gregory Colbert's ten year labor of love, Ashes and Snow. Born from the same footage that produced Colbert's globally-traveling art installation, it's rare only in the sense that the only official DVD release was for sale at said exhibits and now routinely goes in the $75 dollar range when you can find it. The film is shot predominately in slo-mo and golden-hued sepia tones and with sparse narration. It's a true work of cinematic brilliance although I figure some of the footage has to incorporate CGI. Some passages feature the artist as one of the subjects in the symbiotic pairings of the ancient and civilized, animal-human relationships. My only caveat is the possible trauma forced upon the creatures to capture these fantastic compositions. If you're even remotely a fan of Baraka or the 'qatsi trilogy, you'll love this.

Recently Criterion released a handful of Louis Malle's documentaries in one of their eclipse box sets. I'd highly recommend taking a look at that.

I've seen a few of the Norstein/Petrov shorts. I've never even heard of the films in your initial post, but I'll look into finding them. I'll second the Ashes and Snow recommendation. It made my top five of 2005 - a spiritual experience.

Interesting. I'll be seeking recommendations from this thread. For the person who posted Hedgehog in the Fog, that is a wonderful film. I adore it, even.

I don't even know what to think of Kin-Dza-Dza. Certainly not anything like I was expecting. Genius? Idiocy? Genius idiocy? Ku?

I must digest.

I've been hearing about that film - it's supposed to be, well, unique.
