This thread is for voting. I'll post about 4 matchups every day or two, depending on activity. If this goes slow, then I'll start posting more and let them go for longer.

Everyone can vote, regardless whether they participated in nominations.

Only vote in the matchup if you have seen both films. We are going by the honor system here.

There are eight brackets with seedings from each year. I mixed up the matchups randomly to make it more interesting and so this won't be like a yearly consensus type of thing.

You can refer to this thread (http://match-cut.org/showthread.php?t=635) for more of the rules and the nominated films from each year.

It's very striking, though I'm not entirely sure I understand the final movement (heart of the world/kino), or why it is that the mortician constructs a model of a penis to impress the woman. Still, the music was amazing and there's some incredible imagery, I love the fantasy element, and this feeling of community (and world) as an organic entity. Too bad I haven't seen the Kim film.

Thanks for the link. That made the decision fairly easy, and also made me realize it's time to queue up some of Maddin's work. Love the play on Metropolis and films of its ideological bent.

I edited my choice above as well...

Pretty amazing when you consider that many feature length films don't contain as many edits as the purported 850 that Maddin used to assemble Heart.

Not a fan of Sideways, no. I feel Superbad is a more poignant variation on a similar theme.

As for the second grouping, I could really go either way on both. Darjeeling is the recent film I'm most ambivalent about; I swing from 'meh' to 'great' depending on mood. Right now, I'm more in the 'meh' camp.

Man, Iwo Jima is, like, the "meh"est of the "meh"s. Ever. On the basis of pictorial interest alone, Darjeeling should triumph.

I dunno, Eastwood's earnest storytelling always strikes a chord with me, in spite of how clunky his films often are, this one included. Part of me realises how anonymously archetypal the characters in the film are, and yeah, the hyperbolically monochrome look was ill-advised, but altogether I was absorbed.

I suppose Darjeeling is easily the more interesting film, though. Hmm, I'm almost swayed...

I doubt you've remembered EVERY film I've seen (sometimes a film will stay in my signature about a day or two depending on the amount of films I've seen). This whole "you have to see both movies" rule is lame. Why can't people just vote for their favorite movies? This is just for fun, and not an actual battle of the best. Whenever I did my battles at RT (and there were a lot of them), I never enforced this rule.

Does this mean you haven't seen Exiled?

We tried it the other way, but found that the most popular movie always won. Back in RT days, as I'm sure you remember, anything LOTR would just kick everything's butt. This way obscure cinema has a chance, and it also gives us screening lists. I've already found about 4 or 5 from this thread that I'll try to see before the whole thing is over.

To be honest, I don't really care, but people seem to like the "must see both films" rule.

To be honest, I didn't even realize (or didn't remember) that that was a rule until after I voted for Requiem. Before then I just figured it made sense to abstain from voting if I hadn't seen one of the two movies. Unless one movie is a personal favorite and the other doesn't appear remotely interesting, I can't see why anybody would vote without having seen both films.

Man, #1's a tough one for me. Inland Empire's so awesomely emotional and beautiful and ingenious, but I suppose a lot of it is sort of, I dunno, obtuse. So...

1. Gone Baby Gone
2. Ratatouille
(^ two tie-makers!)

it makes perfect sense to me. no matter how terrible i think happy feet may be. i can't honestly say whether i like it more or less than requiem for a dream. no matter how much i love that movie. it would might make sense if it was citizen kane vs. norbit. but the fact that these are all top 15 films based on consensus and generally well received by reviewers, writing them off without having seen them. or weighing something you know you like or don't like versus an unknown quantity seems like it would hurt more than it would help.

I'm surprised GBG has done as well as it has. I'd love to see IE finished off here, since MD will probably kill through most of the tournament, and it's a vastly superior film to its ramshackle follow-up.

I can understand your shock at Exiled, but Punch-Drunk Love? Seriously?I'll admit to being a bit surprised by how handily it defeated Mystic River. The response towards PDL was rather muted at the time of its release IIRC, but I'm happy to see that it has been more widely embraced since then, given that it ranks in my top ten for this decade.

And I'm surprised Red Road made it into the tournament. Haven't only a few posters here seen it?
