I have confidence that I'm not the only one who thinks Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is basically weak overall, but even weaker in comparison to Haneke's most psychologically challenging movie.

Though the cult of Kaufman does elevate his work a little too highly (something that this site largely doesn't do, though), I think ESotSM comes off relatively psychologically simple in a first viewing, but each successive viewing adds more in terms of character complexity (like Joel's sister, Carrie, for example). Haneke is at a drawback simply because his film, though emotionally devastating, hasn't been returned to.

I just don't like Kaufman's writing here, and I'm beginning to think Gondry is a one trick pony. Either way, the movie was just too unfocused for me with all its subplots never equally up to anything profound. I suppose I could say the same think for Haneke's movie, but I've seen the latter twice, and I hardly think about it. However with The Piano Teacher, I've been thinking about it nearly every month for almost the past two years, regardless of how much I liked it, or even how much I understood it (I wouldn't call it emotionally devastating, just very, very bleak).

I can get behind this argument. In fact, I didn't care much for ESotSM after the first viewing, maybe because I had read the screenplay first. But repeated viewings revealed the nuance and charm within these characters, not to mention I thought it did an extraordinary job of handling usually cliche'd themes like destiny and true love.

This is also a tough vote for me because The Piano Teacher is brilliant in its own harsh way, and has one of the most memorable characters on this entire list. Comparing the two is like apples and orange, but Eternal Sunshine has survived better with time for me.
