Didn't you say No Country is your favorite Coen film? I really like Monster's Inc. and all, but are you sure you want to say it's better than anything the Coens have ever made?

There is an abundance of world building, it's excellently integrated into the visuals and subplots. If you want even more world building (although in two of the three at the expense of pace, which is why the cuts made in the novel/film translation are essential) watch the extendeds.
Meh. There's not enough world building to accomplish anything very interesting with it; it just gives a sense of place, while in the novel every event is laden with history.

I saw the extended cuts of the first two films. I thought the added scenes in Fellowship actually benefited the pace, which seemed a bit choppy in the theatrical cut, which provided little sense of the passage of time.

No mood? Please, the mines has a potent sense of place and mystery. Gandalf's speech to Frodo and his final stand against the Balrog are two scene highlights in all of fantasy cinema.
I wasn't referring to all the scenes in Moria—just the battle in the tomb and the subsequent chase. The whole sequence is disrupted by two set pieces (the troll and the broken staircase) that are pretty silly and that have no mood other than the run-of-the-mill excitement of any big action scene, as opposed to the palpable dread of the same scene in the novel. Little things like the rhythmic pounding of the orcs' drums, which build the feeling of doom and suspense in the novel, are replaced with... basically nothing. Also, Gandalf's speech is sorta cheesy, and the fight with the Balrog was a bit too flashy for my liking (although neither scene is really bad).

The pounding and build up of the drums is in the film and the troll scene is excellent (except perhaps the pained Elijah wood slo-mo expression which was already used earlier in the film... which he uses again in Return of the King... but I can bear with it). I'll give you the staircase scene as superfluous and the worst use of greenscreen in the films.

Both the Balrog and Galdalf's speech scenes are amazing and crap all over your opinion.

No need to wait until the end. You can see all the nominated films (http://match-cut.org/showthread.php?t=635) and count how many you haven't seen.

I've seen all but 3 -- Red Road, Exiled & Werckmeister Harmonies. I hope to catch them all before the tourney ends.

Not to sound all conformist on you, but I might I inquire why you prize this one over Lynch's work? That is, can you give why you either appreciate Scott's film or why Lynch's film doesn't work for you quite as much?

It's because I'm crazy!!!!

I actually like both films about the same, and depending on mood I'd go for either one really. Gladiator gets a bit of edge for the nostalgia factor, it was one of the first films I fell in love with when I "got into" film. I love the use of architecture in particular to help push forward the ideas, however simple they may be. I just find visually, the film is extremely well crafted and the story is appealing to me. I'm not entirely sure why, I'm not a fan of epics like Ben-Hur or Spartacus that are very similar... this one just works in my books.

I'm very fond of Mulholland Dr., and I think objectively it's a better film. Gladiator especially suffers from a weak middle section, whereas Mulholland is far more consistent, and ideologically far more intricate and complex. There are a few scenes in particular that detach me so far from the film though, that I have a very difficult time re-integrating myself into the narrative intellectually or emotionally. Still, the scenes and sequences that work are awe-inspiring. Overall, if I'm going to sit down to watch a film 9 times out of 10 I'll decide to watch Gladiator (It's a rare case where I actually own both films), whatever that's worth.

I was surprised at how uninvolving Persepolis was because it looked really good based on clips. It has a few good scenes but it has nowhere near the emotional impact of Brokeback. Even with the silly Gyllenhaal makeup, Brokeback does a superior job of conveying the way persecution can accumulate over many years and affect a soul. Plus, Brokeback does not have an awkward "Eye of the Tiger" singalong.

I found Brokeback curiously flat and dramatically uninvolving

Yeah, I found the central romance entirely unemotional and underdeveloped. I almost got the impression the film wanted me to accept this attraction based solely on the fact that the men were engaging in homosexual behavior. The dramatic and emotional build-up was very little and the sanitized payoff was hardly climactic or physical enough to really generate anything palpable.

Persepolis on the other hand, was a very personal and entertaining film. I thought the insight through Satrapi's eyes was both hilarious, revealing and anecdotal without appearing overly biased.

Spinal
04-15-2008, 04:41 PM
Yeah, I found the central romance entirely unemotional and underdeveloped.

But the whole point of the film is that the men cannot share their emotions, nor can they develop their romance. That's the tragedy. That's what makes the ending so powerful.

Bah, Brokeback had some of the best drama in the last five years. Drama is probably the element of filmmaking that Ang Lee most excels at. The performances he gets out of his actors are almost always uniformly excellent. Something that often goes hand in hand with the acting in terms of the orchestration of drama is the script though and I guess I can see how someone could be bothered by both the pacing and the general flow of the script. The execution (dramatically) was much more interesting than the story the film was originally built upon imo. The visual side of the story's conception/execution was above average, not exceptional (not so much individual shots but overall storyboarding).
