Netflix took their ball and went home. That means nothing from Cuaron, Saulnier, etc. And no The Other Side of the Wind.

Other observations:
Lee Chang-dong finally made a new movie after eight fucking years. Probaby the film I'm most excited about.
Malick is taking his sweet ass time with Radegund, but that's to nobody's surprise.
Naomi Kawase made a movie with Juliette Binoche and it's NOT at Cannes? Is this real life?
Spike Lee hasn't had a film in Cannes since... 1991? That's wild.

Also, a few more films will be announced in the coming weeks to round out the list.
Lars von Trier's new film may or may not get a competition slot, or appear at all. The Cannes board of directors are still arguing about it, apparently.
Terry Gilliam's cursed Don Quixote project has been invited, and will appear, assuming the curse could ever be lifted. At least the film is actually completed this time?

I'll definitely see the Godard at TIFF in September, or at least try to, and I'll probably wind up checking out the Wang Bing just for Wavelengths completism. The rest of the main competition I'll pass on, telling myself I'll catch up with them in regular release, and then not go to see them at the Lightbox because I'm too busy. Also, I should probably read Dead Souls over the summer.

Incidentally, has anybody seen a Valeria Golino film? I remember liking the Hot Shots! films and Clean Slate when I was a kid, but I've never gotten around to her directorial efforts.

And the rest of the films have now been announced.
Nuri Bilge Ceylan made it after all, the ban on Lars von Trier has been lifted... and the curse on Terry Gilliam has been lifted?

Here's how little I know of Cannes. What does it mean to be in COMPETITION or OUT OF COMPETITION?

It's just what it sounds like. The film is shown as a part of the festival. They have it on their schedule, etc. But it's not eligible for any awards.

Speaking of competition, these should be in competition for the most Cannes-sounding titles of all-time.

Wait, so they are able to show the Gilliam with a court case on the film still going on? Or is that settled now?

Wait, so they are able to show the Gilliam with a court case on the film still going on? Or is that settled now?

The court case is ongoing. The producers and distributors for the film released a statement saying they will go ahead with the release of the film, including festival appearances, as they claim Branco does not have the right to block the film, and the legal matter is now a personal one between Branco and Gilliam. We'll see how that goes.

says the guy with the Jeanne Dielman avatar.Jeanne Dielman is long but disciplined. The Square, Winter Sleep, Blue Is the Warmest Colour, and The Tree of Life are just long.

I love Garrone so much... And I still haven't seen Tale of Tales.
