Thought this could be fun, maybe. Post it based on your expectation for what your top 10 will end up being by next January. Whoever has a top 10 closest to their actual top 10 in late Dec/early Jan. will get a prize.

How can you even guess? I can list the big budget Hollywood junk I'm interested in and of course my number one right now would be Mayazaki's new film but I have a hard time staying current on indie, foreign, and low budget films. So many come out and many of them look good I usually hold off seeing them until I awards time so I can watch the standouts. Or, of course if people online are raving about a flick I'll catch it. These tend to be my favorite films but I just don't know how to stay on top of all the releases.

I don't think I can do this, either.

I once predicted Undertow would be my favorite movie of 2004. It ended up being Shaun of the Dead. Also, Guerrilla was once my most anticipated movie of 2004.

I'd like to think Synecdoche, New York will be great, but nearly all debut films from writers leaves me doubting. I'm hoping good at best.

I doubt my number one will actually come out this year but here's to hoping.

Every time I see the word "Synecdoche", I want to smack Charlie Kaufman with a smartass paddle.

I don't really mind it, less often used words can make good titles because than the word becomes primarily associated with the title... I think he ought to drop the New York part though, Synecdoche is better on it's own.

The whole schtick, though, is that it sounds like "Schenectady". Which makes it even more aggravating, kinda.

I don't think I'd mind it so much if Kaufman wasn't such a smarty-pants already. At any rate, I have little hope for the movie. I thought the script was dreadful. Factor in PSH and his bowel movements, and it has very little chance of winning me over.

Ah, didn't think of that, but yeah that's much more obnoxious now. Still, I stand by my believe that you don't lose much with the shorter title.

I haven't read the script, but I did read his Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine scripts and I've noticed that in both the endings to the films are always drastically altered... or rather they cut off before the last point/plot development of the script... and I can't say I blame them because the last plot point usually seems to be very budget intensive and relatively extraneous, pushing the thematic points home much further than they need to be. I wonder if this has also been the case for his other scripts, or will be the case for this script... since he's directing, probably not.

Good writers in joke, though. Pretty sure most people won't get it, but I like it.

Really tough, I'll probably change it up a few times. This makes me really excited for this year though, a lot of films I want to see!

1. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (David Fincher)
2. The Argentine/Guerilla (Soderbergh)
3. Burn After Reading (Coen Brothers)
4. Standard Operating Procedure (Morris)
5. The Leatherheads (Clooney)
6. WALL-E (Stanton)
7. The Road (Hillcoat)
8. The Trial of the Chicago 7 (Spielberg)
9. Changeling (Eastwood)
10. The Brothers Bloom (Johnson)

Just missed
Savage Grace (Kalin)
Miracle at St.Anna (Lee)
Where the Wild Things Are (Jonze)

I'm looking forward to stuff like Ponyo on a Cliff, but I would be surprised if it even gets released in 2008 for North America. If someone has some insight or assurance on this I'm altering my list fo sho. There are one or two other films I'm omitting by this weird feeling deep inside. Also, according to IMDB The Boxer is an 09' release.

Forest Whitaker confirmed this also a few days ago, by the way. Said he supports Jonze's version and thinks that it should be dark and there's nothing wrong with educating children about the darkness of the world.

"Slashfilm reports that Warner Bros. has settled on a new release date for Wild Things -- the formerly "TBA 2009" picture, once slated for an '08 debut, will now reach theaters October 16, 2009."

I'm still hoping to catch a screening of Spike Jonze's work print sometime this year.

Huh. I can't recall even being aware of Revolutionary Road at the time, let alone thinking it would be one of my favorites of the year. I liked Synecdoche, but it's not top ten material. I skipped The Fall when it was in theaters, and now I kind of regret it. It got bad reviews at the time, but people are coming out of the woodwork now to support it. I have almost completely lost interest in seeing Benjamin Button. I won't be able to see Che until mid-January, and It looks like The Road will not be a 2008 film. Chop Shop was good, but not that good.
