Ranking Black Panther vs. Infinity War feels so weird not only because they came so close to each other and bridge right between one other, but they're so mutually beneficial in how Infinity War expounds on the Wakandan characters interplay from that film, while also enhancing their relation to the overall universe, with realizing the giddy joy of them fighting alongside series staples in awesome ways. Black Panther is probably the best solo entry of the entire MCU for me (at least since Guardians, who also have a fantastic presence in Infinity), but Infinity War just feels like all the streams feed into this gorgeous waterfall of an event movie that it's hard for it to feel lesser than anything that came before it. If that makes sense?

Either way Ant-Man and the Wasp has a lot to live up to now. Not just for the 2018 output, but Phase 3 has been a pretty stellar run.

100% on Rotten Tomatoes to this day. Nominated for Best British Film at the BAFTAs. It's legit. It's for wide audiences but never stops being a film that works to satisfy children first. In other words, it doesn't try to sneak jokes to the adults over their heads. I suspect it pleases older viewers because it's earnest without being sanctimonious. It's visually inventive in ways that serve the narrative, not simply as a way to draw attention to itself.

I keep seeing the trailer for this every time I go to my local arthouse theater. I can't wait to see it considering it's a narrative while Moselle's claim to fame is her debut documentary. It looks like it could blur the line between the two mediums in an interesting way.

Beautiful Boy is worth watching eh

I thought so. It doesn't go as far as it should in its portrayal of addiction, but it still packs a huge emotional punch thanks to the visual storytelling, well-curated soundtrack, stellar montages and compelling performances from Carell and Chalamet.

Barack Obama

As 2018 draws to a close, I’m continuing a favorite tradition of mine and sharing my year-end lists. It gives me a moment to pause and reflect on the year through the books, movies, and music that I found most thought-provoking, inspiring, or just plain loved. It also gives me a chance to highlight talented authors, artists, and storytellers – some who are household names and others who you may not have heard of before. Here’s my best of 2018 list - I hope you enjoy reading, watching, and listening.

My favorite movies of 2018:
Annihilation
Black Panther
BlacKkKlansman
Blindspotting
Burning
The Death of Stalin
Eighth Grade
If Beale Street Could Talk
Leave No Trace
Minding the Gap
The Rider
Roma
Shoplifters
Support the Girls
Won’t You Be My Neighbor

It really is annoying just how good his taste is. Also makes me want to see him dabble in writing about film now and then, since just a list (especially one as solid as that) feels like such a tease.

Ahaha.. I also had this conversation with a friend, and I'm not sure I buy the idea of him blindly recommending things considering who he is. Why even post a list of 15 and not say just 5 or 10 if he didn't feel the need to endorse them all? Especially when you have a choice as weird and divisive as Annihilation to kick it all off alphabetically. The only other choice that made me do a double take was Support the Girls, to be honest. But think at some point I heard he requested more White House screenings than any president, and even when he was in office he's always jumped to talk about film and television whenever the press gave him the chance.

Sure, it definitely feels like a very polished list considering his profile, as in maybe there's a film or two he liked a lot that maybe didn't feel as dignified or appropriate that he left them off, but then you could make that accusation of anyone posting a Best Of list.

Support the Girls is great. As is Burning. The Death of Stalin is very good. Annihilation is average. Black Panther is the worst Marvel movie.

I haven't seen any of the others. So, Mr. Obama, you will have to wait a little before I render judgment upon you.

Ahaha.. I also had this conversation with a friend, and I'm not sure I buy the idea of him blindly recommending things considering who he is.

Public figures---especially politicians---don't make unvetted statements, because that's how you get into trouble. (Cf: Cynthia Nixon and Bagel-gate; Hillary Clinton and the "Yankees or Mets?" imbroligio.)

But what specifically raised my eyebrow: It reads like a consensus of half a dozen lists, straight out of Indiewire's Critics Survey. There's no order, no favorite, no best pick (and thus no points of contention). There's a carefully wide representation. Everything he named is an absolutely safe bet and has been well regarded.

People express favorites to express themselves, but this list tells me nothing about Obama. It has no personality.

I feel like the same "no personality" comment would pop up here too if he's more aligned with a Peter Travers rather a Dissolve writer like his actual list. What is indicative of a personality, an obscure watched-by-three foreign film? (btw it's so weird to imagine ten years ago or so that a Bujalski film would mean a majority taste now)

I don't remember where I read it, and I may paraphrase wrong here, but someone observes about half of these concern working-class people or people on the fringe of society. (I feel like it's telling anyway that out of critic-favorite films he chooses these instead of, say, A Star is Born or The Favourite)

I think it's a very interesting list, especially coming from a politician (retired now perhaps, but still). I used to get tired of politicians always naming off the safest of movies, even when I like the movies (generally some combo platter of Casablanca, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Godfather, Star Wars, Forrest Gump, The Shawshank Redemption). But to see a former president name off Lee Chang Dong and Andrew Bujalski movies when he could list A Star is Born or Bohemian Rhapsody or Vice or something is pretty interesting. I mean, even professional critics I follow on letterboxd are just now getting around to watching Blindspotting, and that's their fuckin' job.

He's an intelligent black* man in America, so I don't think it's that weird. Hell, Barack and Michelle saw Do the Right Thing on one of their first dates together.

*ok mixed race, but as he himself pointed out, on the street he's a black man

You guys are kind of missing my point. Yes, it is perhaps not surprising that Obama would be an advocate for the best-known African-American filmmaker of all-time. It is also not surprising that their paths have crossed, that they've shared political interests and that this may have had something to do with Obama mentioning his film. But if you think about the trajectory of Lee's career, it is still a great anomaly to have his kind of radicalism and anger openly endorsed by someone who once held the highest position in the American government. It's extremely significant, and not at all boring, that the former president is using his platform to encourage people to see a film that explicitly names the current president as a white supremacist.

I would be more surprised if he didn't have BlacKkKlansman on his list. I get that while he was in office, he probably tried to be more diplomatic in his public statements (while probably reading, watching, and listening to media that was more interesting / controversial... while not hyping it in public discourse), but Obama is basically a NEET now and writing his memoirs, planning his library, and wondering if Michelle should ever run for anything. I'm curious what he didn't like about Sorry to Bother You since he namedrops Blindspotting (the inferior Oakland movie imo), but not Sorry to Bother You.

If you're hosting fundraisers for sitting presidents, you're not a radical. You're just another wealthy celebrity. That was my point. Let's not pretend Lee is the iconoclast he once was.

but Obama is basically a NEET now and writing his memoirs, planning his library, and wondering if Michelle should ever run for anything.

He's the head of a charitable foundation that bears his name. Not quite a NEET. There's literally millions of dollars riding on his public image.

Hereditary is better than every single movie on your Top 10 list (except maybe Widows, which I haven’t seen).

Did you write about this one anywhere? Curious what you saw in it ...The tight narrative construction, unpredictable story line, persuasively seedy settings and characters, dark humour, and kick-ass pop song over the closing credits.

What a year.

If Beale Street Could Talk
The Favourite
Suspiria
Sorry To Bother You
Roma
Burning
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse
Annihilation
You Were Never Really Here
BlacKkKlansman
11. Isle of Dogs
12. Mandy
13. First Reformed[B]
14. Bathtubs Over Broadway
15. Shoplifters
16. Hereditary
17. Leave No Trace
18. Black Panther
19. Eighth Grade
20. Mission: Impossible - Fallout
21. Avengers: Infinity War
22. Game Night
23. First Man
24. [B]The Balllad of Buster Scruggs
25. Widows

I'm almost reluctant to watch any more potentially great stuff because it's already so tough having to rank, push down and around so many titles I love as is.

Also, it feels wrong only putting Into the Spider-Verse at #7 considering I've already seen it three times in the theatre, more than anything else in my list. (Though there are a lot of two-timers! The good kind!)
