Confused about stuff like Your Name. Are we counting very brief only-to-qualify-for-Oscar run, or wider release like one in NYC?

Dead & Messed Up
11-23-2017, 03:24 AM
With these sorts of lists, I tend to go off wide-release, not festival engagements, but that's just me. If other people have thoughts, pass 'em along.

Peng

I mean I saw it last year, but only because I live in an Asian country. I don't mind awards being US-centric (less confusion that way); I see more and more critics/critic groups relying on Mike D'Angelo's NYC list (http://www.panix.com/~dangelo/nymaster.html) for qualification and I think that's a good idea.

I'm down for that if everyone else is.

This is a good idea but it will exclude certain Netflix films. ("Gerald's Game" wasn't released theatrically, for instance.)

Oh yeah, D'Angelo said earlier this year a day will come when he has to figure out what to do with streaming services for qualification stuff, but not this year for him. I'm thinking maybe that list for theatrical ones, and then finding a list of films released this year for streaming services?

I mean I saw it last year, but only because I live in an Asian country. I don't mind awards being US-centric (less confusion that way); I see more and more critics/critic groups relying on Mike D'Angelo's NYC list (http://www.panix.com/~dangelo/nymaster.html) for qualification and I think that's a good idea.

This is a good idea but it will exclude certain Netflix films. ("Gerald's Game" wasn't released theatrically, for instance.)

UPDATE: Since then it seems like a lot more people and critic groups have depended on and asked about this list, so D'Angelo has included films that will be released in theater to the end of the year, as well as titles that are Netflix-only and Mubi-only. So this seems like a pretty good list to reference to (though in his disclaimer he said "Don't know of a quick-'n'-easy resource for other streaming services" so suggestions for more streaming service lists can still be welcome).

Since we're probably about 2 months away from these getting tallied by someone, it's probably safe to just edit your original post.

I'm fine with subbing something else (you can add Captain Underpants in the last slot if Your Name is out), but just checking to make sure that we really are not doing the NYC wider release date (instead of brief Oscar-qualifying run) from the list (http://www.panix.com/~dangelo/nymaster17.html) I suggested earlier in the thread? I checked last year's thread and I was the only one putting in Your Name (with a tentative unsure "?" added) only because it's released in Thailand. Gaps between Oscar-qualifying date and wide release date will effect quite some foreign films I think.

OK, I'm going to allow Your Name to be included this year. If you have other films that you think should be eligible and kind of ride the line, let me know and I'll try to consider them on a case-by-case basis to be as inclusive as possible.

EDIT: NEVER MIND! It was nominated last year. Can't be considered this year. Sorry, it's a deserving film.

All good! I knew I saw it in theatres close to this time last year, but I forgot I probably helped nominate it back then too.

Now I should probably watch Your Name. (which I actually blind-bought), Captain Underpants and Loving Vincent.
