I'll get to Ms. 45 in a few. I've wanted to see Bad Lieutenant for ages, but not sure if I can handle one more movie of Kietel's wang. And though I've seen none of the man's work yet, I'm surprised by Spinal's ambivalence... from what I've read, I'd figure the sensibilities would link together well...

I'm not typically a fan of dreary naturalism. I do like Mike Leigh though.

I thought both of these were quite competent. I should probably bump BL up to an 8.0 but I'll err on the side of caution. So Ms. 45 next then?

I've seen Driller Killer and Ms 45, but not recently enough to rate them fairly. I remember not liking them at all though.
I got about 1/2 through The Bad Lieutenant, but I turned it off because it was absolutely dreadful. One of my least favorite films I've ever watched part of. I can't rate this one fairly either.

What did you dislike so much about it? The seeming lack of purpose behind the whole affair?

I've only seen Body Snatchers crappily presented on television, so I'm not sure if I should rate it... I'm pretty sure it's a "ehhhh mehhh" but I'm not sure its precise place on the 10pt scale.

Didn't mean anything by it ( maybe you didn't either), he has a very good top 100, the man just likes his cinema, so I'd like to see what he doesn't like. I'm sure there's lots (I've just heard about it less) but I find it provides a more well rounded sense of what a person is into and where they're coming from, knowing both what they like and what they dislike. I like it sometimes when people don't like films I like or like films I dislike. I believe fairly strongly their artistic benchmarks for quality and integrity in art but if there weren't a purely subjective element, things would get fairly boring.
But yeah I have about 200 more films on 1001 films to see before you die. I'm a completionist, so I'd kind of like to finish that before I finally make a top 100 and I'd like to make a top 100 before I make a bottom 100. Master of Disguise would be up there though.

Heh, indeed. Really, black and purple are films I don't really like (I'm just more ambivalent about those in black).
Though I have been wanting to get together a group or list of films I was majorly disappointed by (not necessarily a worst list, just a "biggest downer" list). But, there's probably enough lists on the first page right now.

There are never enough lists. How did you feel about the second Pirates film? I share your dislike for the last one.

Overall, incredible sound design for the film and the first hour is remarkably harrowing in its psychological study. Things seem to shift tone, albeit almost imperceptibly, once Anne gets to the Halloween party. Even the little snapshots of the other conversations distort an otherwise largely subjective experience. Oh, and I'm not a fan of the dog's return, even if it makes sense narratively.

Any reason for the upgrade on your BL rating, Wats?
It's pretty much dominated my thoughts the past day. The final twenty minutes is absolutely compelling, and the Lieutenant's outburst at the church showcases Keitel's naked performance. Sure, there are some uncomfortable moments to sit through, but it's payoff is huge, and I love the constant back and forth clashes from the baseball game to the BL's own personal demons. It's a nice touch.

Care to extrapolate? In typical Ferrara style he keeps the drama above par but the film just felt so empty and ultimately pointless to me.
