Kurt Wimmer adapting Metal Gear Solid. (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=42924)

The streak of bad video game adaptations continues.

Well, look on the bright side...

The dialog and acting can't get any worse than it already is in the game.

The movie will probably have more gameplay as well.

I'd mark out over Kurt Wimmer, but then I realized that the greatness of TV shows are rarely because of their creators.

They should pass out controllers to theatre audiences. People will be holding them wondering when in the hell it is they'll be able to play.

They should give them controller 2, so the fight scenes can be quick and anti-climactic.

http://www.slashfilm.com/2008/05/13/konami-says-paul-thomas-anderson-is-circling-metal-gear-solid/

I just received an email from Kotaku editor, Brian Ashcraft, who originally spoke with Konami’s Aki Saito in person and here’s what he said: “Hey Hunter, [Saito] said Paul Thomas Anderson, not just Paul Anderson, but specifically ‘Thomas.’ Hope that helps!” I just asked Brian again if Saito possibly meant to say director Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil), and he added, “Saito’s handling the movie negotiations, so I’d assume he knew.” The awesome madness continues! More as it develops…

Get out of here, Konami! At a press conference for this summer’s Metal Gear Solid 4, Konami’s Aki Saito, who’s apparently hands-on with the Metal Gear feature film adaptation, told a Kotaku reporter that 1.) the franchise’s feted creator, Hideo Kojima, will not be directing the movie version and 2.) director Paul Thomas Anderson is a possibility…

At first I thought this was a crazy rumor, but then I read another article earlier on G4 saying that Hideo Kojima has already approached PTA and said that he is interested.

I dunno what to believe....

I don't want to live in a world where one actor plays Batman, John Connor, AND Solid Snake. The guy is just in everything these days. His performances are starting to have the same effect on me as saying a word over and over again does. Besides, Snake is older.

I've only played the first "MGS" game, but that gave me the impression he was probably 30-35. Which would fit for Bale.

The guy's a good actor. If we're gonna have one person play several big roles, I can't think of anyone better to do it.

Though I always thought Hugh Jackman had the right look for Solid Snake.

But yeah, I really don't care about this movie. 'Tis not a game I've held in high regard since I replayed it last year.

Come on, meg, even you have to admit that having Bale play every cool badass in the world of fiction is a bit of overkill.

It's unfair to the rest of the actors.

I think Hugh Jackman is a good choice. What about Russell Crowe?

as posted in the video game thread;

Metal Gear Solid is moving forward, with Avi Arad (Spider-Man, X-Men) attached to produce.

The project was announced at a joint press conference with Arad and Kojima in attendance. As Arad explained, a Metal Gear movie is a pretty natural progression from his work in comic films:

"For many years I fought to bring comics to theaters--and video games are the comics of today. We will take our time and tell the story with all the nuances, ideology, cautionary tales needed."

Grouchy

I wonder what path they will take, Metal Gear is perhaps the easiest videogame franchise to adapt but at the same time, a lot of what makes it so fun and cool are all the meta vdeogamey stuff and crazy ass japanese characters and drama. Remove all that and it's Splinter Cell, not Metal Gear.

Filmmakers need to remember that the things that make a video game engaging aren't the same things that make a movie engaging.

Video games are immediately involving, pulling you out of your body and placing you in the virtual space of your onscreen surrogate. Any plot elements that arise affect your surrogate and, consequently, affect you. Almost like having a dream.

Movies are different in that you are not an active participant — you are an observer. So certain storytelling techniques are employed in order to break down that barrier to the point that the observer feels like a participant. Done successfully, a movie can feel like a vivid dream.

Metal Gear Solid is commonly regarded as "inherently cinematic", but I'd caution the filmmakers to bear in mind that the so-called "cinematic" elements in the games are overwhelmingly just giant chunks of exposition. And it's common knowledge that giant chunks of exposition rarely make for great action adventure cinema. Unless you're Christopher Nolan, in which case you can apparently do whatever you want and still manage to make your films ludicrously entertaining...

I predict that they will make a completely normal spy/espionage/action movie with just a couple of name drops at most.

The game stories are way too convoluted and, well, stupid for anyone to take seriously on the big screen.
