I think you should definitely watch at least The Insider and Collateral before writing him off.

I hated it. I know, unpopular opinion. In all fairness I haven't seen it since it came out.

If you were very young at the time it might have been a drag, it's a talky film. But I think I have a taste that's usually very aligned with yours and I think it's awesome.

Some of these things just irritate me. My brain puts it in the same place as Tinker, Tailer, Soldier, Spy. Its not that its inherantly bad filmmaking, its just filmmaking that annoys me. Again, its been so long that I could totally reverse opinion on rewatch.

Whatever happened to that Blackhat: Director's Cut (http://www.indiewire.com/2016/02/breaking-down-michael-manns-sharper-directors-cut-of-blackhat-272478/)? Obviously it wasn't successful enough to warrant a physical re-release, but surely an online service would've taken it.

Either way, it was going to be the version I watched.

Malick of course.There's definitely been a downward trend in his filmmaking since the '70s (notwithstanding The Knight of Cups and Song to Song, which I haven't seen, Badlands and Days of Heaven are still his best movies), but for all the structural and conceptual weaknesses of The Thin Red Line, The New World, The Tree of Life, and To the Wonder, the guy still knows how to cut a sequence, even if he seems to find it increasingly difficult to get from one sequence to the next.
