When it comes to its favorite movie of the year, Match Cut isn't always clear ...
http://i1152.photobucket.com/albums/p485/joelharmonpdx/551358-split-universal-final_zpse4nqzsbc.jpg
Oh, man have you seen La La Land? It's seriously the best! I thought Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling were talented before but they also sing and dance and stuff! And there's bright colors and fun songs, but it's not all happiness, you know. They have problems too, just like life! But when you love someone, man, you just gotta let 'em live their life. La La Land, man, you gotta see it!

I prefer a movie that explores gender non-conformity, like Moonlight. There wasn't another movie this year that was as successful at appealing to my emotions. I like a film that is grounded and honest and real.
http://i1152.photobucket.com/albums/p485/joelharmonpdx/Split-Movie_zpsts9mdlim.jpg
You want real? Hell or High Water was gritty and tough and explored hard truths. Plus, I like a movie with some action and tension, you know? I just wanted to see if those criminals could get away with it or if they'd get caught by that old guy with the speech impediment.
http://i1152.photobucket.com/albums/p485/joelharmonpdx/split-jamesmcavoy-smiling-creepy_zpssjwjhvzu.jpg
The winner is Arrival. I have already seen it. Time is non-linear. Surprising? Perhaps. But not as surprising as next year's win for The Boss Baby.

THE WITCH!!! IT'S GOTTA BE THE WIIIIIIIIIITCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!

Today, we attempt to reconcile the various aspects of Match Cut's personality and offer you the best film achievements of 2016. There might be some twists along the way, who can say? Enjoy.

Crazy James McAvoy highlights how The Witch was totally robbed at the MC Awards.
Also, Kristin Stewart gave a fine performance in Clouds of Sils Maria but this whole "actress of her generation" thing is completely out of hand.

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY
Chung-Hoon Chung
The Handmaiden
“He chooses different methods of framing characters, with a specific eye as to who has the power in each scene. Usually drifting to a more steady camera, he prefers using pans to help convey surroundings and show where the attention should go next.” - Moviepass

Linus Sandgren
La La Land
“It was a technical puzzle,” said Sandgren. “We maintained the basic movement, but we were forced to end up behind the characters, instead of in front*of them. *To deal with the shadows, we’d split the long shot into different shots and mask the cut in a whip pan. For the audience, it still feels like one shot, which was important*to Damien.” - Indiewire

Natasha Braier
The Neon Demon
Refn had Braier watch 10*films, including*“Rosemary’s Baby,” “Clockwork Orange,” “Beyond the Valley of the Dolls,” and “Scorpio Rising.”
“These were not visual reference points for the film,” Braier said, highlighting that the common thread of each film is that the*filmmakers created their own universes. “The reason he showed us these films was letting us know we would be going all the way, no matter how over-the-top, in carrying the ideas of the film to their extreme and without fear of failure.” - Indiewire

“And this is a movie that’s very much about nature and these priests in Japan surrounded by the*foliage. And a big part of the movie is how that sounds, how that feels, the presence or absence of God in this natural environment.” - Prieto

BEST SOUND
To present our next award are legendary Soviet filmmakers, Sergei Eisenstein, V.I. Pudovkin, and Grigori Alexandrov...
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Bu4p3nJYyOM/VmM_7TKWYwI/AAAAAAAAGZc/8Nn61x_FUlg/s1600/contrapunto.jpg
Sound-recording is a two-edged invention, and it is most probable that its use will proceed along the line of least resistance, i.e., along the line of satisfying simple curiosity.
In the first place there will be commercial exploitation of the most saleable merchandise, TALKING FILMS. Those in which sound-recording will proceed on a naturalistic level, exactly corresponding with the movement on the screen, and providing a certain "illusion" of talking people, of audible objects, etc.
A first period of sensations does not injure the development of a new art, but it is the second period that is fearful in this case, a second period that will take the place of the fading virginity and purity of this first perception of new technical possibilities, and will assert an epoch of its automatic utilization for "highly cultured dramas" and other photographed performances of a theatrical sort.
To use sound in this way will destroy the culture of montage, for every ADHESION of sound to a visual montage piece increases its inertia as a montage piece, and increases the independence of its meaning-and this will undoubtedly be to the detriment of montage, operating in the first place not on the montage pieces, but on their JUXTAPOSITION.
ONLY A CONTRAPUNTAL USE of sound in relation to the visual montage piece will afford a new potentiality of montage development and perfection.
THE FIRST EXPERIMENTAL WORK WITH SOUND MUST BE DIRECTED ALONG THE LINE OF ITS DISTINCT NON-SYNCHRONIZATION WITH THE VISUAL IMAGES. And only such an attack will give the necessary palpability which will later lead to the creation of an ORCHESTRAL COUNTERPOINT of visual and aural images.
So let's see if the nominees use sound artistically. They are...

I loved both Drive and the unjustly maligned Only God Forgives. I think I'm just a Refn fanboy.
The Neon Demon is one of my least favorite movies of 2016 but the technical awards here are well-deserved (even if I didn't vote for it).

03-14-2017, 02:13 PM
I found The Neon Demon utterly empty, but Refn's technical work there can't be denied; I just wish he'd tie himself to a conventional script rather than something of his own, as he's been proving that his weakness structurally is in his scriptwork.
Also worth noting, though, is that Park's The Handmaiden is now on Amazon Prime for those who still haven't seen it. Well, well worth your time.

Yep. The Neon Demon is a technical masterpiece but too in love with it's aesthetics. Horribly paced, acted, and scripted... So it balances out to just being okay.
The Neon Demon is my second favorite film of the year, so I'm more than okay with its wins so far. Loved it!

BEST SCORE
Jóhann Jóhannsson
Arrival
Born in Iceland
Co-Founded “Kitchen Motor”; a think tank, art organization, and music label
Previous Scores: Prisoners, Theory of Everything, Sicario
Next up: Blade Runner 2049
“I have the luxury of working in pre-production with Denis, and the primary inspiration for the score came from the concept art,” Jóhannsson told IndieWire. “One of the main themes was written during the first week of shooting when the helicopter approaches the alien shell [or ship] for the first time.”
Mica Levi
Jackie
Born in UK
Performed as a Violinist.
Previous Scores: Under the Skin is her only previous score
Next Up: Marjorie Prime
Levi likes what the use of music does for the film. "It elevates the surreal element, because music creates a layer of fantasy," she says.
Justin Hurwitz
La La Land
Born in California
Played in an Indie-Pop Band, Chester French, with Damien Chazelle at Harvard.
Previous Scores: Guy and Madeline on a Bench and Whiplash
Next Up: ???
"I have nothing against modern jazz. I just don't know it as well as I need to. I need to start getting more into what's been happening with jazz in the past 30 plus years.” - Hurwitz
Nicholas Britell
Moonlight
Raised in New York City
Graduated from Juilliard School’s Pre-College Division and Graduated from Harvard; Co-Produced Whiplash
Previous Scores: The Big Short, A Tale of Love and Darkness
Coming up: Battle of the Sexes and Ocean’s Eight
“One of the things that I focused on when I first saw the film was I was imagining how to get inside Little’s point of view. He doesn’t say much, he is quiet, but you know that there is a lot that he’s thinking and feeling. That idea of introspection and thinking internally felt right with these kinds of harmonies, and there’s a violin that’s doubling the melody on top.” - Nicholas Britell on Little’s Theme
Cliff Martinez
The Neon Demon
Born in The Bronx
Drummer for Red Hot Chili Peppers from 83-86
Previous Scores: Drive, Traffic, Sex Lies and Videotape
Coming Up: Rough Night and The Foreigner
“Not so much with this film. That definitely happens. I borrow from other composers just like everyone else does. And Nicolas, who usually has some points of reference for me, didn’t really recommend anything this time. I’m kind of proud that I wasn’t really listening to anything else while working on The Neon Demon.” - Cliff Martinez on inspiration

Love the ensemble win for Moonlight. Also love the score win, although I voted for Jackie.
Of the five nominees for best editing, La La Land was the least deserving. That's the only award so far I'm disappointed by.
Really enjoyed seeing past winners. Love Rachel Getting Married for ensemble, Bright Star for cinematography, and Upstream Color for editing. Ensemble win for We are the Best! really sticks out (haven't seen it), as does Speed Racer still to this day.

Kudos to Spinal and the presenters for putting this together. Fun thread, and I love The Lobster walking away with it.
I didn't love The Lobster but it unexpectedly winning a bunch is very niceee. I'm guessing Duke loving it just recently and his ballot breaking four ties are what pushes it over.

So, yes, Duke, with the final ballot, managed to cast decisive votes for Best Actress, Best Cinematography, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Costume Design. Perhaps more impressively, he managed to AVOID creating new ties.
And as you can see, The Lobster managed to win fairly handily and yet still be a surprise when it was announced.
I was pretty meh on The Lobster, so I'm similarly pretty meh on its wins here.
Like Ivan, I too am pleased by Emma Stone's win, despite the backlash on this forum.
All in all, I'll echo the sentiments on the nice work from everyone presenting the awards. *thumbs up*

Things I learned while sifting through the Match Cut Awards history:
1) Shane Carruth is the only person to receive a Matchie for editing for a film that he also directed (Upstream Color). He is also one of two people to win a Matchie for Best Original Score for a film that he also directed. The other is Tom Tykwer (Cloud Atlas).
2) Match Cut has only agreed with the Oscars once in regards to Best Editing. That film was Mad Max: Fury Road. Match Cut has also only agreed with the Oscars once in regards to Best Original Score (The Social Network). Match Cut had never agreed with the Oscars on Best Documentary Feature until this year (O.J.: Made in America).
3) This year, Mary Zophres became the first two-time Matchie winner for Best Costume Design for her work on Hail, Caesar! She won previously for True Grit.
4) Only two men have ever won the Matchie for Best Costume Design: Michael Wilkinson (American Hustle) and Casey Storm (Where the Wild Things Are). Likewise, only two women have ever won for Best Editing: Margaret Sixel (Mad Max: Fury Road) and Sally Menke (Inglourious Basterds).
5) Emmanuel Lubezki has won three Matchies for Best Cinematography (Birdman, Gravity, The Tree of Life). To my knowledge, no one else has won more Matchies in a single category.
6) This year, Natasha Braier (The Neon Demon) became the first woman to win the Matchie for Best Cinematography.
7) The only animated film to win the Matchie for Best Sound was Wall-E.
8) Two foreign language films have won the Matchie for Best Ensemble. They are A Separation and We Are the Best!
9) Match Cut has agreed with the Oscars most in the category of Best Visual Effects, a total of 6 times.
10) The only two-time winner for Best Documentary Feature is Joshua Oppenheimer (The Act of Killing, The Look of Silence).
11) Laika won its second award for Best Animated Film this year (Kubo and Two Strings, Coraline). Others with two wins ... Pixar (Wall-E, Monsters University), Don Hertzfeldt (World of Tomorrow, It's Such a Beautiful Day). Studio Ghibli has only one win (The Tale of the Princess Kaguya).
12) Six of the winners for Best Adapted Screenplay come from books, two are from plays, two are from previous movies in their respective series, and one is from a television program.
13) Karen O is the only performer to appear on two of the Match Cut winners for Best Original Song, "All is Love" and "Immigrant Song", which somehow won despite being a cover.
14) Ryan Gosling and Leonardo Dicaprio have both won Best Actor twice. So far, there have been no repeat winners for Best Actress.
15) Match Cut has not agreed with the Oscar for Best Director since the Matchie was given to the Coen brothers for No Country for Old Men, about a decade ago. Only one woman has won the award, Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty).
16) If my counting is correct, the record for the most Matchie awards is four, and it is held by two people: Joel Coen and Ethan Coen. They have two wins in the best director category, one for original screenplay and one for adapted screenplay.
17) 100% of the winners for Best Original Screenplay were written or co-written by the person who also directed the film.
18) Rataouille is the only animated film to win Best Original Screenplay. Despite this, it actually lost the award for Best Animated Film.
19) The Act of Killing is the only documentary to win a Best Picture Matchie. No animated films have taken the award. No foreign language films have taken the award either, unless you were to count The Act of Killing, which you probably shouldn't.
20) Match Cut has not agreed with the Oscars since No Country for Old Men on Best Picture.
