View Full Version : Battle of the 00s (New and Improved!!)

Some might remember that I used to make these threads way back on RT and the old Axis. The basic idea is that we create a large pool of films from each year, seed them, post a few matchups at a time, and then vote on the better film. I maintain a bracket, similar to an NCAA tournament bracket, and post the battles and results every couple days.

Given the large turnover in membership, with a lot of active posters who weren't around in the early days, I think it's a perfect time to begin the project anew. We've also had a lot of films released since the last Battle of the 00s (which was in 2004), many of which will be competitive for the title.

Just so you know, the last battle resulted in City of God beating Requiem for a Dream by a vote of 18-12. Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and Mulholland Drive were also in the final four.

How it works:

1. The nominating process. We will begin with 2000 and continue, a year at a time, until 2007. Everyone will post a list of up to 20 of their favorite films. The list can be ordered or unordered. It doesn't matter. Each year will be seeded based on the number of mentions, so make sure you only mention films that you feel are worthy of nomination. Note that eligibility is based on IMDB Release Dates Only. That means that Spirited Away is a 2001 film; The Lives of Others is a 2006 film.

2. A bracket will be created with 16 films for each year. Matchups will be based on seeding. #1 will be up against #16, #2 against #15, etc. The actual seedings will be hidden so that we keep a bit of suspense. Seeding is done because in earlier contests, the stronger films would meet up and get eliminated early, leaving us with a less interesting finale.

3. We vote. Four matchups will be posted every day or two, depending on activity. The earlier matchups will probably go quicker than the later matchups, where we will wait for the majority to chime in and have their vote counted.

You are supposed to vote only if you have seen both films. We go by the honesty policy. Last time we created a too obscure rule to prevent a movie that just a couple fans had seen, which would coast through the bracket because they were the only ones who could vote on its matchups. Judging from the yearly threads, I think our membership here is well-versed in obscure cinema, so we're not going to have this rule until at least the Sweet 16 (and hopefully not even then). We'll see how it goes.

Everything will take place in this thread, so make sure you subscribe and keep and eye on it. This whole thing will probably take a couple/few months.

Fred Willard seems like a nice person, I guess, but when he was a guest reviewer on Ebert & Roeper, his criticism of La Science des rêves ("sometimes you don't want to be that challenged by a film" or something to that effect) seems to say it all when it comes to the films he chooses to act in.

haha true, willard is hardly discerning when it comes to the projects he picks. however guest's trilogy of mockumentaries are some of the funniest and most rewatchable films i own.

Well, one would hope that if you're going to invest two hours of your life in a film that you'll be able to remember it fifteen minutes later.

There are many ways for that to happen. You can be challenged, moved, entertained, etc. You seem to be saying that there is only one way. Fred Willard excels at making people laugh. It's how he's been able to earn a living. It's his niche. I imagine that he doesn't get offered roles in films by Godard and Varda.

I think it was 2001.

We really need more science fiction films that don't reference 2001 incessantly. They have to blaze their own trails. I mean we're talking about the universe here, are the only metaphors we can come up with sexual, evolutionary and balletic?

Don't get me wrong, not bashing 2001. I love 2001 but more filmmakers need to start pushing new boundaries in sci-fi film.

It did. But for consistency's sake, IMDb goes by first public showing, which in this case was 2005.

I've stopped using imdb dates that use the Butt-Numb-a-Thon as a premier. It is just empowering Harry Knowles too much.
