This has gestated in my mind since I saw it in theaters six months ago, and I'm still unsure of how I feel. I love bizarro artsy stuff like most of us here, but during my first experience with it, I started looking at my watch either after the fifth phallic symbol, or a segment where the mustache of Udo Kier's character longed to return to his blind wife. After a while, I felt it was absurd for the sake of being absurd. Yet, it stays with me for its visual and aural style. It's hypnotic and entrancing from beginning to end with its commitment to an almost haunting feel reminiscent of the silent era. Every scene had several shots that left me gawking at their magnificence (The Final Derriere, the opening titles, and the woman meeting her inner child on a train, to name a few). There were even several moments where I found myself thinking, "Why couldn't THIS segment be silent, like the one before it?", so there is a pining for a return to the silent era.

I don't know if have the intelligence to fully understand it. I doubt I got its sense of humor. I don't even know if Guy Maddin is my cup of tea (this was the first film of his that I've seen). But even then, I'm very glad I saw this. Its images have resonated with me, and now that it's on Netflix Instant, I look forward to giving this a second go.

Needs more Elina Löwensohn. Other than that, however, embedded tales = awesomeness.

I'm surprised this is Maddin's highest RT rating - 95% last I looked. I think he's starting to convert the masses. The movie was fine - there's very little emotional resonance for me though, I think I look for that even in films by the Quay brothers. Visually though this was a tour de force.
