I'm interested to read your Love & Friendship thoughts, Melville, because outside of a fun Tom Bennett performance, I got very little out of it. Stillman has done much better.
Partly the sense of humor just didn't jive with me at all. But partly I thought the execution was off; for the humor to work, it needed to be delivered in a punchy way with lively comedic timing -- and probably a livelier camera and editing rhythm. Instead it felt lifeless and baggy to me and seemed to rely entirely on the audience finding the performances and dialogue funny in themselves. Unfortunately, I didn't, and I didn't laugh once.
But I also hated Damsels in Distress, so clearly Stillman isn't for me.
Probably gonna update this again around Oscar time.

Alright, just got finished writing my yearly Top 10 of the year post. I'd appreciate it if you all would check it out and see what you think. :)
http://cwiddop.blogspot.com/2016/12/my-top-10-movies-of-2016.html
(And yes, Irish, you are that film buff friend that I reference in my #6 entry. :p )
I've been thinking about this, off and on, since you posted it. I think your choice here is the most interesting way to go about it --- diamonds in the rough over perfect carats.
I've seen so many top 10 lists from crix this year that are the same. (It's like, thanks, I've heard Moonlight is a great film from 100 other sources. I don't need to hear it again.)
Your list is a helluva lot more fresh, more idiosyncratic, and more interesting.
Some weeks ago I got my hands on Kael's "For Keeps." It's 1,300 pages of her reviews and essays. One of the aspects I like about her writing is that she'll pan a film, but then take pains to point out one or two attributes that are worth talking about. Maybe a performance. Maybe production design. Maybe edits or shots. The film isn't any good, she says, but here, pay attention to this one part of it. It strikes me as a much more vital way to approach pop art.
I'm at the point where I find flawed movies with good ideas vastly more interesting than good movies with perfect execution --- like, I'd rather talk about Alien 3 than Alien, for example. The Rover over Fury Road. Automata over Ex Machina, etc.
Anyway, great list, TGM. You have me more than half-convinced to check out Batman v Superman, which is something I thought I'd never do.

I've finally got enough movies to write a top ten, so here it is. I expect some repositioning and a few to fall off the bottom as I continue to catch up with this year. Got a ton I'm really excited to see still (Red Turtle, Silence, Moonlight, Toni Erdmann, Arrival, and Manchester by the Sea, 20th Century Women chief among them).
Almost done watching Edelman's OJ film and I'm pretty sure it'll end up on here.

Our Little Sister
Did you ever post about this? Curious what you thought.
(I only saw about 20 minutes and it seemed like a very twee, slow-moving indie which I can sometimes appreciate but I'm not always in the mood for.)
Edit:
Okay, I may have confused "Little Sister (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5434870/)" for "Our Little Sister (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3756788/)." *cough* :D

Welcome, Rico!
I regret having Kubo play on a flight over Christmas--though without sound--as I'm now trying to wait long enough for images to fade so that I can enjoy the experience more fully. Certain Women, American Honey, and The Handmaiden are also on the docket.

I think it's been a very poor year for American mainstream cinema.
Yeah, was gonna say that after the unexpectedly stellar 2014-2015, 2016's blockbusters were a huge step-down. Other areas may be even better though.

Given how many films are produced each year, it seems impossible--or at least extremely unlikely--that there could be a bad year for movies, assuming we define a "good year" as one with a fair number of exceptional films (let's say fifteen to twenty). Of course, maybe you don't, or wouldn't, like Aquarius, Captain Fantastic, Fire at Sea, Harmonium, Hermia & Helena, Kékzakállú, La Mort de Louis XIV, Neruda, The Ornithologist, Safari, or The Woman Who Left as much as I do (and I'm less enthusiastic about The Dreamed Path, La La Land, and Moonlight than some other people), but I'm sure you'd find something you liked if you watched a large enough sample.

Given how many films are produced each year, it seems impossible--or at least extremely unlikely--that there could be a bad year for movies, assuming we define a "good year" as one with a fair number of exceptional films (let's say fifteen to twenty).
I wouldn't define it that way, but even if I did, I don't think there have been 15-20 exceptional films in 2016.
I'll definitely find something I like. I saw a few films I liked last year. But none of the films I saw were particularly exceptional, or at least, nowhere near the quality of great films from almost every previous year I can think of in memory. Cinema on an international level tends to do better, but even then, several of the more acclaimed non-US films from last year I am either not particularly interested in seeing, or I saw them and found them middling.
I will say I have yet to see The Woman Who Left and that has a good chance of being a favorite, but still, my metric is fundamentally comparative. I can give you 10 films from each of the 10 years prior to 2016 that I consider good to great. I can think of exactly zero truly great films from 2016. Actually, I'd put Stillman's Love & Friendship up there, but that's pretty much it for me.
I also admit I haven't seen nearly as much as I have in previous years, but I also have not wanted to see nearly as much as I have in previous years. So there's that.

I also have not wanted to see nearly as much as I have in previous years. So there's that.
This is pretty much me as well. I look at all the lists here and see a bunch of films I found well overrated (La La Land, Sing Street, Elle, The Witch, Hell or High Water, Zootopia, Captain America, Hail Caesar!, Everybody Wants Some!!), a bunch of solid but no more genre films (The Nice Guys, Don't Breathe, The Green Room, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Triple 9) and several prestige or auteur pictures I'm not really all that jazzed to see (Moonlight, Jackie, Midnight Special, The Neon Demon, Certain Women, Love and Friendship, Captain Fantastic, Louder than Bombs, Knight of Cups etc.)
Basically the only five US films that I still really care about seeing are Manchester By the Sea, Silence, Arrival, Paterson, and American Honey for some reason).
It's been a shitty year for American film. I haven't seen enough non-American films to comment.
