I've seen 50-something movies from 2015 and feel like I have about a million more to catch up with before doing any nominees I feel good about. Right now, all I got is:

BEST PICTURE AND WHATEVER CATEGORIES THEY APPLY FOR
Anomalisa
Ex Machina
The Hateful Eight
The Look of Silence
Mad Max: Fury Road

My biggest question is we don't have a short film category and World of Tomorrow, despite only being 16 mins long, is better than most feature-lengths around sooooooooo what we do?

I wouldn't have a problem with people nominating it for any category they deem fit. If it gets nominated next to the features, bully for Hertzfeldt. We've never made distinctions about shorts before. I remember there being Looney Tunes shorts voted into some yearly top tens we did awhile back.

So I've seen like 8 films from the year so far, and none I've seen (save The Force Awakens, which isn't really best picture material) have been all that great. Nor is there anything out there I feel I HAVE to see (maybe ex Machina). Is this a poor year for film, or am I just way out of touch with what's good. Is Mad Max really a best film type movie? I thought it was a summer popcorn action flick (I'm not a fan of those) and haven't had much desire to see it.

I mean, countless critics and industry groups seem to agree that it is. It's a phenomenal movie.

It's one of the most spectacular, dazzling, singular movies I've ever seen. I'll be very surprised if it doesn't win this thing, assuming the votes ever get compiled. But whether or not you'll like it probably depends on why you're not a fan of summer popcorn movies. If you generally dislike frenetic action, you'll probably dislike Mad Max; it's almost nonstop, propulsive action insanity (and cinematographic, art design insanity). But if you only dislike summer action movies because they're bland and vapid, then you should give Mad Max a shot, as it's definitely not that.

EDIT: Also, I'd count three movies from this year among my all-time favorites—Mad Max, The Look of Silence, and World of Tomorrow—and I've barely seen anything. So I don't think it's been a weak year.

It's a pretty terrific year for movies from where I'm standing. And Fury Road is pretty spectacular. I'd wager even those on this forum who don't think it's all that on the plot/story level (fools, the lot of them) would agree that its production design, symbolism, and unrelenting energy are far above average for an action flick.

You and I are on exactly the same page, sir.

If any of the many movies I plan to catch up with even rival the dizzying emotional heights those three lifted me to, I'll be over the moon. Needless to say they're also easily my top three for 2015, even though it's tricky in my mind since I saw Silence at TIFF in 2014.

Look at it this way.. in 1989 Rain Man won best picture (out of The Accidental Tourist, Working Girl, Dangerous Liaisons and Mississippi Burning) which I don't actually have a problem with, but it sure seems that Die Hard is the one movie from that year that has really endured. :)

Nice. That level of shared sentiment is a rare occurrence. I'd add the old pritch smiley, but we seem to have lost it in one of the site migrations.

I've been doing a top 50 list each year since 2009 and (in my humble opinion) 2015 is the best year out of all of them. It's arguably not the deepest year from 1-100, but it's incredibly strong from 1-25.

Okay nerds, I'm gonna tally these and come up with a final ballot. But first! You'll have the opportunity to update or submit new ballots. Deadline for that is 11:59pm EST Wednesday July 20. Then we'll vote on the whole thing together and have a Matchies show.

Sound cool?

Let's go!
