Liza the Fox-Fairy (Károly Ujj Mészáros, 2015)

One of the few Hungarian films I've seen that seem to be aiming for an international, mass-audience (read:commercial) appeal. There are some dark trimmings to Mészáros' fantasy-tinged rom-com, but I think he's succeeded. It's lightweight fare, to be sure, but has an unbeatable dynamic acting duo in Mónika Balsai and otherworldy J-pop sensation, David Sakurai. She plays a caregiver to an elderly woman and is searchng for her soul-mate, and he plays a ghostly apparition that only she can see. He's also jealous of the attentions of her suitors and winds up causing them all to meet unfortunate ends, all the while convincing her that the ever-increasing body count is a result of her curse of being a fox fairy, which says that all men who try to love her will die horrible deaths.

The visuals were awesome -- imagine Wes Anderson remaking Amelie, but with a lot of murders. This was a really fun movie.

It just finished its festival run where its been getting rave reviews. Can't wait 'til it gets a DVD release. Here's the trailer:
