I can't say that the filmmaking is all that innovative here. But if this subject matter interests you (as it did me), then it may be worth a look. Tobey Maguire's take on notoriously unstable chess legend Bobby Fischer is a little off-putting until you compare him with the real deal and realize that his portrait is fairly accurate. Also really enjoyed Liev Screiber's nuanced take on Boris Spassky.

As far as chess movies go, I really want someone to adapt Walter Tevis's The Queen's Gambit. Done right, it would be a masterpiece.

What performances are you thinking of? I know I've seen him in other things, but I didn't really pay much attention to him until this performance.

He was fantastic as Wolverine's brother Victor. ;D

I quite liked him in The Manchurian Candidate. I also thought that was a very good movie all round.
