WHOA! This was unexpected. How has this been so unseen by EVERYONE, not just the MC Community? Just came across it by chance and it's one of my faves of the year.

Good film. Loved the song at the end."Four doomed men ride out!"

Did anyone else found hilarious that the troglodytes' chant sounded almost identical to the smoke monster from LOST?

I thought it sounded like Obi-Wan's tuskan raider call.

That was my reaction.

Is it really a horror film?

Is it really a horror film?

No.

There's some rough stuff toward the end, but it isn't horror like you're probably thinking of horror. It's body horror and slasher and maybe a touch of torture porn for people who never watch those genres.

Is it really a horror film?

It's a western flick that rides out and heads into that horror territory just over yonder and high-tails it back out come the ending.

What it is is very good.

This is now on Amazon Instant Video. I'm making it a priority over the weekend.

Body horror, slasher and torture porn are all horror, so if this is all three of those, then it is definitely horror.

Well, it starts horror-y enough...

Have you seen the movie?

Horror does not drive the plot. The antagonists are cannibals in name only (you never see them eat anyone on screen, for instance). The horror elements that do exist only exist in the last act of the film. Those scenes contain brutal violence but it’s nothing a regular horror fan wouldn’t have seen before.

Inexperienced viewers, who only know the genre from mainstream stuff like Paranormal Activity, American Horror Story and The Walking Dead, will find those same scenes freakish and excessive.

Does it matter?

Just watch the damn thing.

Yeah - there is no conversation more boring than genre semantics.

Uh, bright eyes, you started this conversation.

I only sought to answer Meg's question, from the point of view of a horror fan.

It matters when somebody asks, "Is it really a horror movie" and the answer is, "Eh, not really, but..."

Actually, one of them takes a nice chew of the deputy's leg on screen.

Loved this movie even if some scenes could have easily been cut to make it play faster. But for a debut feature it's excellent and the cast assembled is fucking incredible - besides the top listers, Sid Haig, Sean Young, Fred Melamed and Michael Paré are in this. Anyone else noticed how it has no music before the end title crawl? There's even a meta joke about it when Matthew Fox is trying to get the pianist at the saloon to play a tune.

Really don't understand what y'all saw in this. It's shot in the most flat, boring, ugly way and moves so slowly. I've seen it called a slow burn but to qualify for that something has to actually burn at some point. There's no narrative tension or creative staging and the editing leaves a lot of fat on the table. I know the budget was super low, but goddamn does this thing look cheap.

The only admirable things are Russell and Jenkins' performances. Didn't recognize Jenkins at all until the credits rolled. Really disappeared into that with the voice.

The last shot felt like a metaphor for the whole thing. An inert object hitting the ground and just sitting there.

There's music at a few points. When they leave the town to go on the rescue, for example.

Sometimes no music can be really effective (No Country), but there has to be tension in the framing and pacing, which it completely missing here. I felt like I was watching dailies some of the time with how flat everything is shot and colored and cut.

I enjoyed it okay but was sort of lost as to what the point of the whole thing was. Felt like they took the screenplay from an unproduced western from 70 years ago, replaced all mentions of "Indians" with "Troglodytes", and spliced in some torture porn money shots.

Jenkins was awesome though.

We just received our copy and will watch it today or tonight.

I was disappointed reading the synopsis. I thought the title was similar to Get Carter or Kill Bill, and there was some guy named Tomahawk that they all couldn't wait to-

This went from a very interesting western to a thoroughly unpleasant horror show.

The stuff towards the end was just unnecessary. Not the acts themselves, but we did not need to see that stuff in such awful detail.

Left a very sour taste in my mouth.
