Now that the low-end awards shows (Independent Spirit, Oscars, et al) are out of the way, the true highlight of the awards season can begin. Will this year's Match Cut awards hold as many surprises as the Academy Awards? Or will it once again devolve into a long string of predictable internet poster geekery? We shall see!

These awards will likely be awarded over the course of the next day and a half, so pack a lunch.

In the past, this event has been hosted by consummate actor, Danny Huston. However, the more we consider Danny and what he means, the more clear it is that his totality cannot be summed up by a single message board jpeg. That is why tonight I have recruited six individuals to represent different aspects of Danny Huston, a man who resists definition.

So, ladies and gentlemen, I give you tonight's host ... "Danny Huston".

Greetings, friends. I am Bilbo Baggins. I am a hobbit. I am a plain, quiet creature. Awards shows make one late for dinner, that's what I say. I don't know - I kind of have to hope that, still, the very best from Kon may be yet to come... Plus, I prefer Millennium Actress to Paprika. Which still got me high.

When I played the role of Jeanne d'Arc, I did not have a need for makeup. To us, makeup was an extravagance that served as a barrier between the artist and the audience, an unnecessary filter that diluted raw, emotional performance.

But, man, I saw Norbit last year and that shit was funny.

Spinal's rep will be impossible to beat after this.

Well deserved though.

Despite Ratatouille not getting nominated for Best Pic, I figured it would've won just by the amount of people that saw it. I underestimated the viewership here I guess. I also say Match Cut was wrong in that case......... But this will not be my last post.

Cinematography... Also wrong. Jesse James is unbelievable. Oh well.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/joel_harmon/bale20dylan20120aug07.jpg

Are you really here or am I dreaming
I can't tell dreams from truth
for it's been so long since I have seen you
I can hardly remember your face anymore

When I get really lonely
and the distance causes our silence
I think of you smiling
with pride in your eyes a lover that sighs

If you want me satisfy me, if you want me satisfy me
If you want me satisfy me, if you want me satisfy me

Are you really sure that you’d believe me
when others say I lie
I wonder if you could ever despise me
when you know I really try
to be a better one to satisfy you
For your everything to me
and I’ll do what you ask me
if you’ll let me be, free

If you want me satisfy me, if you want me satisfy me
If you want me satisfy me, if you want me satisfy me
If you want me satisfy me, if you want me satisfy me

The second nominated song for the Match Cut awards ...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/joel_harmon/fotc109.jpg

Jermaine:
How does she know you love her?
How does she know she's yours?

Bret:
How does she know that you love her?

Jermaine:
How do you show her you love her?

Both:
How does she know that you really, really, truely love her?
How does she know that you love her?
How do you show her you love her?
How does she know that you really, really, truely love her?

Jermaine:
It's not enough to take the one you love for granted
You must remind her, or she'll be inclined to say...
"How do I know he loves me?"
(How does she know that you love her?
How do you show her you love her?)
"How do I know he's mine?"
(How does she know that you really, really, truely love her?)

Well does he leave a little note to tell you you are on his mind?
Send you yellow flowers when the sky is grey? Heyy!
He'll find a new way to show you, a little bit everyday
That's how you know, that's how you know!
He's your love...

Bret:
You've got to show her you need her
Don't treat her like a mind reader
Each day do something to need her
To believe you love her

Jermaine:
Everybody wants to live happily ever after
Everybody wants to know their true love is true...
How do you know he loves you?
(How does she know that you love her?
How do you show her you need her?)
How do you know he's yours?
(How does she know that you really, really, truely-)

Well does he take you out dancin' just so he can hold you close?
Dedicate a song with words in
Just for you? Ohhh!

Both:
He'll find his own way to tell you
With the little things he'll do
That's how you know
That's how you know!

Jermaine:
He's your love
He's your love...

That's how you know
(la la la la la la la la)
He loves you
(la la la la la la la la)
That's how you know
(la la la la la la la la)
It's true
(la la la la la)

Because he'll wear your favorite color
Just so he can match your eyes
Rent a private picnic
By the fires glow-oohh!

Both:
His heart will be yours forever
Something everyday will show
That's how you know
(That's how you know)
That's how you know
(That's how you know)
That's how you know
(That's how you know)
That's how you know
(That's how you know)
That's how you know
(That's how you know)
That's how you know
(That's how you know)
That's how you know!

Jermaine:
He's your love...

Bret:
That's how she knows that you love her
That's how you show her you love her

Jermaine:

Hi, I’m Leon Trotsky, famed Bolshevik revolutionary, Marxist theorist, part-time hair model and, until yesterday, full-time corpse. You might ask how any of this qualifies me to present an award for Visual Effects on a small internet movie forum? You might ask that, but let me tell you this; I got stabbed with a fucking ice pick! Did you get stabbed with an ice pick? No? The shut the fuck up! When you get stabbed with a fucking ice pick, that’s when you can tell me what I am and am not qualified to do.

Zodiac

http://www.studiodaily.com/images/articles/7847_1174419774.jpg

Production Info!

Zodiac’s photorealistic 1970s San Francisco backdrops were initially planned to be produced by going back in time and shooting the film on location and in period, until Robert Downey Jr. pointed out that shooting a film about the Zodiac murders in the exact time and place of the Zodiac murders might create something of a time paradox and cause the universe to implode on itself. Cheers, Bob!

Transformers

Production Info!

In producing the elaborate pyrotechnics for Transformers, Michael Bay actually reduced an entire densely populated city to rubble. Don’t worry, it was a crappy city.

Production team’s early efforts to secure real pirates as character models was said to be, in hindsight, an unwise decision.

Spider-Man 3

Hi guys, you used to like me! Up next is a category that will be familiar to at least one brave match-cutter; one unafraid of the tedious, mechanical, soulless, mind-numbing side of filmmaking. Please welcome, Buffaluffusaurus!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/joel_harmon/n634615935_49267_451.jpg

Most people only really recognise editing when it's bad. It's one of those invisible arts, where if you spend too much time noticing it, it means the editor's not done his job properly.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/joel_harmon/n634615935_49267_451.jpg

Essentially, an editor has to take all the information presented to him, from the script to the coverage to the director's notes, and assemble them into a form that is coherent, structured and aestethically consistant with the rest of the film. It's about refining everything that has happened so far into a manageable little lump. It's about stitching together the entire fabric of the film, combining all the elements into the final product. It's about troubleshooting and finding creative ways around problems that occured during shooting or the scripting process.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/joel_harmon/n634615935_49267_451.jpg

But most of all, it's about STORYTELLING.

http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/section/movies/filmography/1/WireImage_1714161.jpg

As an editor, you have to ensure that the film has a certain logic to it, whether it's the logic of a character's actions and motivations, or the logic of structure. Even though cinema has been around for more than 100 years, the basic rules of storytelling have not changed one bit. For some reason, there are ways of structuring a film or a scene that just work, and they work very well. Sometimes editors will find new ways that also work very well, but often sticking to the rules means you will succeed.

So without further ado...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/joel_harmon/Pete_rocking_Out20.jpg

On bended knee is no way to be free
Lifting up an empty cup, I ask silently
All my destinations will accept the one that's me
So I can breathe

Circles they grow and they swallow people whole
Half their lives they say goodnight to wives they'll never know
A mind full of questions, and a teacher in my soul
And so it goes

Don't come closer or I'll have to go
Holding me like gravity are places that pull
If ever there was someone to keep me at home
It would be you

Everyone I come across, in cages they bought
They think of me and my wandering, but I'm never what they thought
I've got my indignation, but I'm pure in all my thoughts
I'm alive

Wind in my hair, I feel part of everywhere
Underneath my being is a road that disappeared
Late at night I hear the trees, they're singing with the dead
Overhead

Leave it to me as I find a way to be
Consider me a satellite, forever orbiting
I knew all the rules, but the rules did not know me
Guaranteed

Before I grudgingly present the award for BEST ART DIRECTION, I would like to interject that awards presentations are not an occasion for frivolity and crude humor. In my esteemed opinion, there has been far too much from both columns offered up here thus far. Best Adapted Screenplay: No Country for Old Men

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/joel_harmon/33798788.jpg

No Country for Old Men, which we all know is based off of Dr. Suess' highly controversial anti-Nazi work. Here the Coen brothers continue their trend of adapting Dr. Seuss novels to make movies (an actually rather popular trend, as I know we're all waiting to see "Horton Hears a Hoo.") It’s as they themselves note: "We've only made movies from two books: Homer and Dr. Seuss."

Best Original Screenplay: Ratatouille

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/joel_harmon/ratatouille_movie_image_pixar_ _1_.jpg

Ratatouille was originally scripted in its two organic languages (French and rat) because writer/director Brad Bird felt that the imagery of the film was compelling enough to tell the story (a la "The Passion of the Christ"), but after Disney got into the fray (and with all their corporate concerns about T-shirts and lunch boxes and other blabbity-blab like that), they opted to translate it to English, even forgoing subtitles. To their credit, though, the dubbing was nearly flawless and Rat, my friend, is not an easy language to dub.

Cheers, I'm Michael Sheen and I would very much like to know why I wasn't invited to participate in Elizabeth: The Golden Age. I mean, perhaps I'm a bit naive, but I think generally when a film has success, it is proper form to at least extend an invitation to one of the film's stars when you are producing a sequel. But I suppose this is to be expected of that batty old nimwit, Helen Mirren. I'm sure she had something to do with this. Listen, we do hundreds and hundreds of takes! A chap's got to break some wind every once in a while! This is an absurd overreaction to an ordinary bodily function that we all must cope with, even some arrogant, Oscar-winning diva with a stick so far up her arse that it must occasionally jostle her dentures!

Excuse, someone's whispering in my ear.

I'm sorry, what?

I don't know you
But I want you
All the more for that
Words fall through me
And always fool me
And I can't react
And games that never amount
To more than they're meant
Will play themselves out

Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you have a choice
You've made it now

Falling slowly, eyes that know me
And I can't go back
Moods that take me and erase me
And I'm painted black
You have suffered enough
And warred with yourself
It's time that you won

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/joel_harmon/5854.jpg

Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you had a choice

Raise your hopeful voice you had a choice
You've made it now
Falling slowly sing your melody
I'll sing along

At this point in our show we’d like to bring out our wonderful producer for an important message. Please welcome, Spinal.

http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/7765/spinal2hy3.jpg

Thank you. Thank you very much. Being a show in which we congratulate ourselves in the industry and advertise all our wonderful talents, we’ve decided this year to go one step further. Instead of cutting to a commercial break, we’ve developed our own set of commercials used to promote the services of some of our finest. Without further ado, here’s a word from a few recognizable faces.

http://img238.imageshack.us/img238/6913/hustonwm8.jpg

Hi, I’m Danny Huston. I’m sure most of you recognize me from my supporting performances in many recent films. I’m what some in the industry call a “character actor”, meaning I play a specific type of character quite well, and am thus employed by different directors when they have that character type in their film. My specialty is “douche bag”, with a minor in “smug asshole”. Recall the scene in Birth, when I put young Cameron Bright over my knee and spanked him? Or in Silver City, where I acted with the same facial expression the entire time, no matter the situation I was in? Perhaps you know the face?

http://img238.imageshack.us/img238/6913/hustonwm8.jpg

Pretty damn good, eh? I don’t think I need to say any more. If you feel your film needs a little douchiness, a little bit of smug, and your focus isn’t on actual acting ability, I’m available to any and everyone. Thank you for your time.

http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/4807/hayaomiyazakisc4.jpg

Hello there. My name is Hayao Miyazaki. Many of you likely don’t recognize my face, but perhaps you’ve seen some of the films I’ve directed: Porco Rosso, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro, Howl’s Moving Castle?

Well, I’m here today to apologize to all of my fans. A while back I announced my retirement from films, and I didn’t live up to it. The fact is, I just couldn’t rest with all of these unique ideas in my head! I thought of a young girl who goes on vacation with her parents, only to discover the little sea town she visits has a window to a wonderful magic world filled with quirky spirits! Eh? Pretty great! Or how about a world where magical spirits help a young boy deal with the divorce of his parents? I mean, c’mon! These are gold! And there’s another one about a young child without any friends who deals with her loneliness by escaping to a fantasy land with dragons and a talking princess animal!

Look, with ideas as original and brilliant as those, you would have had a hard time walking away too, right? So stay tuned for my latest film, Ponyo on the Cliff, where a 5-year-old boy has a relationship with his goldfish princess, who wants to become human. Where do I come up with this stuff?!?

How do I host so well?

What I do is I pretend to be Danny Huston if he were hosting an awards show.

You're confused? It's perfectly simple, case in point, this Spinal character contacts me through the internet and says to me "Sir Ian, I want you to be Danny Huston" and I said to him "you are aware that I am not really Danny Huston?" And he said "Yes I am aware of that, what I want you to do is to use your acting skills to portray Danny Huston for the duration of the awards show." So I said ok and then I said to myself hmmmm how would I do that?

And this is what I did, I imagined what it would be like to be Danny Huston and then I pretended and acted in that way on the day. And how did I know what to say? The words were typed underneath my picture. How did I know when to appear? People told me. If we were to draw a graph of the process of my method it would go something like this: Sir Ian. Sir Ian. Sir Ian. Action! "THE NEXT AWARD IS FOR BEST CATERING SERVICE!" Cut. Sir Ian. Sir Ian. Sir Ian.

I remember thinking how darling Ricci looked back in '96. Interesting to see how she's grown into a strong actress, even if I've moved on from her since then. And yes, I did just say darling. Shove off.

Most of Fincher's wins are on a technical level, too. In terms of film aesthetics, Zodiac is pretty much masterful. Nearly every technical decision aids the film's construction. The scene in the park is hauntingly scary.

My only complaint is that Jake seemed a little too young in his "older" scenes, which limits some of the believability late in the film. That said, I think that's it.

It received strong support in the Original Screenplay category. Hmm. As someone whose response to the movie was lukewarm, I'd argue that the screenplay was its weakest link. The actors do wonders with what they're given, and it's pleasant to look at from start to finish. But that screenplay...
