Welcome one and all to the belated but much anticipated ceremony for the 2014 MatchCut Motion Picture Academy Awards, better known as The Matchies!

To save a few bucks we're going sans host this year (even Danny Huston wouldn't give us a friend rate). So I'll be rolling out the winners over the next few days. Thank you to everyone who submitted nominees and voted in the final stage. Got some very cool and interesting results to reveal.

Enjoy!

That's an odd result to me. Wasn't poor sound mixing one of the chief complaints against Interstellar? The music boomed at insane levels, and the dialogue was often impossible to discern.

It definitely wins my award for Most Noticeable Sound, though!

I voted Guardians. But seriously, my vote in that category probably shouldn't be counted. I have no idea what I'm talking about.

Lazlo

I think it's a taste thing on Interstellar, and may also be an IMAX/non-IMAX thing. I saw it twice in IMAX and thought the sound was exemplary. Was an example to me of being able to use music and effects in atypical ways to affect emotions. The only time I had a hard time hearing dialogue was in Cooper's dream, the crash he was remembering. But that, I think, is meant to be abstract and disorienting.

Catching up with these! Definitely a lot of nice winners, especially since there haven't been too many that weren't my own votes. ;)

Animated Feature was really the perfect tie result since I went back and forth between exactly those two for a while before eventually choosing Lego. (The final decider ended up being just how many times I've seen it, and that it's probably for the reason that I love it just that much.)

Keep 'em coming so fantastically, Lazlo!

Thanks dude, I'll keep rolling 'em out.

A fair amount of my picks have won, though I can't for the life of me get on board with the Under the Skin score. I get that it cultivated a mood, was innovative, and it was effective, but Interstellar worked so much better for me. I also think the editing achievement on Boyhood is incalculable.

I went for Citizenfour and Big Hero 6 myself.

Acting results coming up!

I thought it was a neat little wrinkle to the proceedings. Nice way to recognize the film, for sure.

Simmons was an interesting case. For the longest time in the nominating process he wasn't going to make the short list. Then he goes on and wins the damn thing.

I'm glad Michael Keaton won. I think it's cool that an actor who I've never thought of as particularly great can turn out such an amazing performance. I was rooting for him at the Oscars, though I didn't expect him to win. I felt the same way about Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler.

Thanks for putting this together, Lazlo! I appreciate the effort and time you took compiling everything...

Impressive that UtS took the best film upset. After everything else went to Anderson's film, I was very much expecting that one to take it all.

A lot of the imagery from Glazer's film remain quite vivid in my mind. Interesting that this is the most non-narrative MC selection since Malick's Tree of Life. And the choice to compile this later in the year gave some of the other films an interesting chance.

Biggest loss for me is Ida's non-win of the best supporting actress. Agata Kulesza killed it. Interesting that Linklater's film didn't do better to, in many respects.

Yeah, thanks for doing this, Lazlo. Great job.

I'm tempted to open a thread now to collect everybody's top ten list, and do the top 20 countdown. I'd like to see how that would look now, this late in the year, with the Matchies results to compare it to.

Fiennes was robbed. I can't think of anything closer in contemporary cinema to 1930s Cary Grant.
