Oh yeah. The upsets in the actress categories were pretty exciting too. I haven't even seen those films, but I was excited to see something so unexpected happen.
My thoughts:
I liked the shorter, faster show. Not sure if the writer's strike made a difference there. There was some fat that could have been cut (Bee Movie, wtf??), but aside from Best Picture countdown, it flowed smoothly.
Once winning the song and them letting Marketa back out to give thanks was amazing. That's the type of class the Academy has always lacked.
Bardem, DDL, Coens, No Country, mostly expected and all deserving.
Tilda rocks. Long overdue for a win, and this really was a coinflip.
Unbelieveable that Roger Deakins hasn't won an Oscar. Would have won for either film this year had they not both been nominated.
Boo to No End In Sight not winning. It is one of the most earnest and engaging political documentary in recent years.
Edit: oh yeah, one more thing. My better half won our indie theater Oscar party's pool with 16 correct. We get free passes and stuff. Weee.
That too.
Also thanks to the Oscars I don't think I'll ever see Enchanted. I say they served me well in that regard.

-The show was pretty boring to watch as a whole. The wrtiers had a week to put it together. Luckily, Jon Stewart was funny enough to keep it moving.
-Marion and Tilda win! I don't know if I had that in Barty's Oscar Pool, but I selected them to win in my real pools and kicked ass because of it. Marion's speech was my favorite.
-Diablo's win started out great but just ended kinda strange. And she's just inviting more comparisons to stripper for what she was wearing.
-The Coens are weird, but after Scorsese winning, this was practically the next big win I wanted. Sweet.

Haven't been following the thread, but just wanted to say that "Falling Slowly" was the highlight for me. No question. A magical moment and Stewart bringing her back on stage after the break was an amazing gesture.
Very nice, but was that his initiative? Or does he get instructions spoken into his ear from some head honchos backstage?
Nonetheless, if it was his call, then it's totally awesome on Stewart's behalf.
Random thoughts:
Daniel-Day Lewis looked so genuinely humbled, shy even when accepting that award. And when he's on screen the man's a colossal force of nature. I can't wait to finally see There Will Be Blood this week.
I love Marianelli's win for Atonement.
I still rooted for it to nab best picture, but realized it totally wasn't going to happen. No Country for Old Men is totally cool by me however. A good year for the Academy methinks.
Too bad Belgian entry Tango Arghentini didn't win in the category short film.
And yeah, those Enchanted songs blew hardcore.

And this is hardly a new trend, that the Oscars don't include the highest grossers. What do they expect to be up for the award? Transformers and Pirates 3?

Haven't news shows always complained about how boring the Oscars are and how they've never seen any of the movies? As far as I know it's always been that way. But yet they keep on watching, and those movies tend to always do fantastic business once they get on DVD. Just look at the top two movies rented on Netflix.

That's how I see it. If they want to watch the highest grossing films win awards they should tune in to the MTV Movie or People's Choice award shows. Those of us who want to see films that have received high praise and deserve to be nominated (at the very least) will watch the Oscars.
That said I think the low ratings for last night's telecast speak to the fact that sadly a tight show does not result in many surprises. But on the other hand I'd rather have that than a telecast that goes on as long as some of them have in the past.

I don't think it had anything to do with Jon or how the show was structured. It was likely a combination of the WGA strike deflating the awards season and the lack of "name" stars and movies as front runners for the big awards.

Nobody even knew the Oscars were happening until a week ago. With that, they didn't get to push who would be there, and I don't recall seeing many movie ads saying how many Oscars they were nominated for, etc.

Plus Stewart has proven in both of his hosting gigs that he has the chops to handle the job in a manner that benefits the show but also makes it fun to watch in some ways, or at least not as boring as the show could be. Bardem and Day-Lewis are definitively on my cool book. So is Tilda Swinton, and in fact I think she's hot in a quirky way.

Indeed. She's had me since Orlando. I should probably explore more of her work, actually. Watching her in Edward II recently reminded me what a presence me has...

No way. I'd totally love to sit down and have a drink/convo with him. :)So would I, although I would have to be careful not to act like a geeky fanboy. I'd calmly tell him I thought his performance as Bill the Butcher was awesome, and that I liked him in Last of the Mohicans as well. I should really see more of his work.
Dairy Queen employees must have it rough these days.
"Yes, sir, I understand. You have a straw ... I have a straw. Do you want that for here or to go?" If I were one of those people and someone said that line to me I'd be awfully tempted to punch them in the face.
PS: Sorry Spinal but I couldn't resist leaving the quote in your rep comment. It just rolls off the tongue!

I can understand the anger about Brad Renfro being left out of the "death montage" (though what I find more offensive, personally, is the applause during these segments).
But I find it stupid that Whoopi Goldberg apparently "had to fight off tears" on "The View" while talking about her disappointment in being left out of the "Magical Moments" montage going over the past 80 years of the show.
She wasn't the only one left out. They were covering 80 years in a span of 1-2 minutes...they can't show everyone.

My personal philosophy is to mourn the death for a day and then celebrate the life thereafter. I usually take applause to mean they are celebrating the life and the accomplishments. Unless you are referring to the unbalanced applause where "high profile" people get more applause than "nobodies."

I don't see why they can't just cut the mikes picking up the live audience during that section.

Yes, that's what I mean.
I hate how the applause has this huge crescendo when some A-list star shows up on the screen. Then editors, cinematographers, writers, lower-profile actors, etc. get little-to-no applause.

DDL, from Telluride at least, seems like one of the nicest people you'd talk to, and loves talking about movies as much as we do. Naturally, he talks about performances more than anything else, but he's got a "Force"-ish attitude where you'll believe anything he says.

I don't know why anyone would ever be afraid of DDL. The guy looks gentle as a button and talks like the most polite person on Earth.

I wish I could see footage of him in character behind-the-scenes. He scared off the first kid that played Eli Sunday, and was tough to work with on Gangs of New York because he was so intimidating.

Especially during the famous scene where he's scratching one knife across another before slicing up a pig. The part where he taps his glass eye is just damn creepy.

Basically the most absurd thing ever:
Academy Awards producer Gil Cates has personally apologized for omitting Whoopi Goldberg from a Oscars montage of magical moments that aired during the telecast of Sunday's 80th Annual Academy Awards ceremony. The actress, who has twice hosted the Oscars and is a previous Best Supporting Actress winner for Ghost, fought back tears as she spoke of her disappointment during her morning TV show The View on Monday. And her upset has prompted producer Gil Cates to say sorry. He tells America's People magazine, "No harm was intended, and I feel very, very badly that she was left out. I'm going to call her and tell her that... It was an absolute oversight."

Yeah, it's fucking happening. Woody Allen's next writing/directorial effort is set to star both himself and David.
Oh I've read this before but I haven't managed to comment on it yet: count me in! I adore Allen (obviously) and Larry David. Not only that, but 1) I actually love Woody as an actor/his screen persona so seeing him on screen is grand 2) seeing him do a comedy after he's said "no more" 3) New York 4) Larry David on screen --- all these make it absolutely GALACTIC!

I believe she was included in a different montage, the one prior to the Best Actress Oscar.

Yeah. The Best Supporting Actress montage. That was the Oscar she won for her performance in Ghost.

My thoughts on the show:
-A lackluster production, but otherwise great picks for the winners. Stewart's gag about the possible strike montages they showed seemed to further highlight the possibility that the supposed real montages were just that: filler edited together to fill airtime of a possible strike-era show. That said, I'm glad that more irreverent humor continues to get into a show that was ridiculously close to stale.
-Stewart did a great job. I keep thinking though that any cred he had with the Academy should be shot after all the nasty mocking. Or if that's part of the act or what. Either way, whoever decided to let the second winner for best song go back out and give her speech was spot on. I don't recall that ever happening in the history of the Academy Awards. At least since I've been watching.
-As I said above, this is the second year in a row my favorite film of the year also won Best Picture. The third time in five years too. Interesting that the internet critics and the Academy match up so well this year. Interesting too that the internet critics don't at least acknowledge it.
-The trend of really spreading the love between films continues. In the last decade, only two films have really cleaned house (Titanic and Return of the King). Otherwise, I figure they're doing this now because the more movies they can put "Academy Award Winner" stickers on, the more DVD sales they get. Everybody wins.
-On a slightly related note: Berardinelli, just shut up about the Oscars already! Jesus, what a whiner. You don't like them. We get it.
