It has been twelve (12!) years since Ringo Lam has made a movie (eight if you count his section of Triangle) and I'm sorry to say Ringo Lam has been officially lost to time. Wild City is indistinguishable from any other run-of-the-mill HK action/thriller being churned out at the moment (it's only marginally better than a Dante Lam joint like The Stool Pigeon or The Viral Factor and if I didn't know any better I'd swear all three of these were directed by the same studio hack). There are some brief flashes of exciting style but it's otherwise standard coverage and mediocre choreography filtered through a cheap digital aesthetic. It's brisk and watchable, I suppose, but also cliché, with some hamfisted symbolism and typical genre moralizing.

Oh well.
