Haha it looks about like what I expected. The effects look like a mix of ok and oh-no-baby-what-is-you-doing. I like several of the actors here, and it's all but guaranteed to be quite silly and probably a fun enough afternoon viewing. I can dig.

I wouldn't say awful, but ... not good, either. I understand it's a video game movie, but ... meh.

It's pretty sad because the most recent revamp of the video games (starting with X) actually have a decent story and writing.

We're not really complaining that MORTAL KOMBAT is ridiculous, are we?

Idioteque Stalker

The Sub-Zero stuff was cool. Could've done without Scorpion's "get over here" at the end, but it's basically required.

Philip J. Fry

Needs more Johnny Cage. Otherwise, it looks really fun.

We're not really complaining that MORTAL KOMBAT is ridiculous, are we?

That's my entire problem. I WANT it to be ridiculous. But they seem to be wanting it to have some earnestly delivered plot.

Just give me 80 minutes of fights with insane gore. That's all I want from an MK movie.

Ezee E
02-19-2021, 04:16 AM
At least they're going all in with the gore and fatalities. Haven't played a MK game in over a decade, but I def watch the fatalities on youtube

My issues with the new MK:
Who is this protagonist? They made him up for the movie. Why isn't it just Liu Kang, Johnny Cage or Sonya Blade?
Birthmark? WTF.
Trailer needs more Shang Tsung.
Mileena doesn't have fangs.

Things I did like about it:
Gore, obviously.
Goro looks pretty badass.

Don't know, guys. I'm probably the biggest MK fan on the site, so maybe take that into account. I still play MK11 almost daily.

megladon8
02-19-2021, 02:27 PM
Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion is inspired.

I'm just really worried this is going to lean more towards the MK: Annihilation side of "silly", rather than kung fu with horror gore kind of silly.

Imagine the Raid type of fights in MK form?

Imagine the Raid type of fights in MK form?

Exactly. That's what I want.

I am expecting this will be 75% attempt at storytelling, 24.5% poorly photographed, dimly lit fight scenes, 0.5% cool gore.

The fights in the trailer (specifically Sub-Zero/Scorpion) look pretty dope, though. Loved SZ's waterbending moment.

I figure this will be his highest-grossing film, but imagine those who’ve never watched one of his films before and going to see it from trailer + Tilda...

This movie that I may or may not have seen...

I'm going to GUESS that if McKay is your thing, you'll like. If it's not, you probably won't.
I'm also going to GUESS that the movie is at its best when it's dealing with the main characters that are simply wanting to be heard.
I'm also going to GUESS that the other characters, while a bit cartoony, sometimes seem to know they're in a satire.

EXCEPT... I'm going to GUESS that Mark Rylance is a MVP. And probably not enough Kid Cudi.

Just GUESSING.

???

It seems more engineered than created, but otoh the gender flip is cute and I like that Rachel Leigh Cook plays the mom.

There's so many teen based romcoms on Netflix that I think the service has become the quasi-equivalent of MTV for zoomers --- something you watch with half an eye, right after school and before you parents get home.

Given the junk I sometimes watch, from lame horror to fringe cartoons, I can't really turn up my nose at too many projects obviously aimed outside my demo.

"SLC Punk" and "Scooby Doo," but he also appeared on "Halt and Catch Fire" and the "Twin Peaks" reboot/sequel thing.

Can't really bust on this guy, either. I'll always like him because of "Hackers" (1995), and he puts out nothing but good vibes on twitter, sorta in an Alex Winter vein.

I'm okay with that. Keeping Blomkamp away from pretty much everything is fine by me.

Picked up Regal Unlimited pass today for $60 off (thanks Mal). Sadly, no movies out right now that I want to see. So it got me thinking of what I'm anticipating.

Most anticipated:
1. Licorice Pizza (no trailer, but promising cast/plot and PTA coming off his best movie)
2. The Power of the Dog (looks to be a home run for Campion, best trailer I've seen in some time)
3. Titane (sure to be wild, Raw was a fantastic debut for Ducournau, palme d'or win)
4. The Tragedy of Macbeth (striking trailer, early raves, how can it miss?)
5. Red Rocket (I've got nothing but love for Sean Baker)

I'll also be more than happy to see:
Spencer (loved Jackie, waiting for Kristen Stewart to finally wow me)
Don't Look Up (is it too big for its britches? I'll be happy to find out)
The French Dispatch (Wes going full Wes. Tons to appreciate)
Dune (IMAX here we come)
The Humans (my morbid curiosity can get the best of me)

Dishonorable mentions:
Belfast
King Richard
House of Gucci
West Side Story
tick, tick... BOOM

Also, with C'mon C'mon, Belfast, Passing, The Tragedy of Macbeth, and (parts of) The French Dispatch -- b&w movies coming on strong this awards season.

As the human species adapts to a synthetic environment, the body undergoes new transformations and mutations. With his partner Caprice (Léa Seydoux), Saul Tenser (Viggo Mortensen), celebrity performance artist, publicly showcases the metamorphosis of his organs in avant-garde performances. Timlin (Kristen Stewart), an investigator from the National Organ Registry, obsessively tracks their movements, which is when a mysterious group is revealed… Their mission – to use Saul’s notoriety to shed light on the next phase of human evolution.

Plot summary is like ... yikes! Of course, I'm all over this.

It sounds just as ambitious, taking a deep dive into the not-so-distant future in which humankind is learning to adapt to its synthetic surroundings. This evolution moves humans beyond their natural state and into a metamorphosis, which alters their biological makeup. While some embrace the limitless potential of trans-humanism, others attempt to police it. Either way, Accelerated Evolution Syndrome, is spreading fast. Saul Tenser is a beloved performance artist who has embraced this new state, sprouting new and unexpected organs in his body. Along with his partner Caprice, Tenser has turned the removal of these organs into a spectacle for his loyal followers to marvel at in real time theater. But with both the government and a strange subculture taking note, Tenser is forced to consider what would be his most shocking performance of all.

This looks good even though the director is an awful human being.Huh?

Google it. David O. Russell has a history of being abusive towards his actors. Especially the female ones.

That one video (from that awful movie) was so extra that I wondered if it wasn't Punkd style marketing. That's how bad a person he is in it.

Trailer for the new Dungeons and Dragons movie should be out soon. I saw it before the channel it was on went private. It looks very silly and lots of fun. Strikes the right tone and energy for the whole affair, I think. Color me super surprised.

I don't think it looks that good but damn Chris Pine is good. I think it was QT who noticed he has the looks of a '60s TV star.

Big shoes to fill, not only to the Erich Maria Remarque novel, but the 1930's Lewis Milestone film (which you oughta watch, 'cause it's still one of the best and most horrifying war films ever), but so far, so good. Looks excellent.
