It woulda been nice if this movie at least attempted to be a horror movie, instead of some weird, shitty action movie. Bleh.

The drill scene was the only scene that evoked any reaction.

.5 stars.

What surprised me:

How much the script bent over backwards to accommodate Sam Rockwell.

How much they relied on taking bits from the original (TV static, the tree, the clown, the hole in the ceiling) but without any of the material surrounding those bits.

How completely flat and unambitious this was. There were some great images & compositions but the rest of it felt mechanical and rote. Like they were really just going through the motions. After The Conjuring and three parts of Insidious, this brought nothing new to the table, nor did it reinterpret anything about the original.

I was honestly shocked they didn't go as low as having a dog bark at a wall.
