I can't say no to an opportunity to see Donnie Yen on the big screen... but I should probably learn to.

Donnie delivers some decent work as the action director, I suppose; there are some cool bits throughout, though nothing that even comes close to approaching his best work. That final fight sequence, however, has to be some kind of new low. Two combatants in the middle of traffic and it's almost Revenge of the Sith levels of overwrought, with unbelievably bad special effects miring the whole affair. That it's so ridiculously nonsensical and simultaneously supposed to function as the harrowing conclusion to the film's attempted moral drama is, in a word, perfect.

It's the ending this absolute mess of a film deserves.

I don't have the energy to hate on this thing for a thousand words or something right now so I'll just say this: there's a scene early in the film in which the lead detective arrives at the scene of a traffic accident to take over the investigation, and the next five minutes are a hodgepodge of American crime drama clichés that don't even make any sense together in context, including a coroner delivering what sounds like a final autopsy report for a corpse still freshly planted on the asphalt. I grant that translation issues could play a role here, but the whole thing plays like a poor masquerade, a HK film going "this is what people on CSI look and sound like" as a quick delivery method for pointless exposition. It's lazy, it's poorly constructed, it's Kung Fu Killer starring Donnie Yen, maybe playing in a theater near you.
