I know these things happen often, call it zeitgeist or whatever, but it's really a stroke of bad luck to make and release this movie at the same time that True Detective was broadcast on TV. The comparisons become too unavoidable and since a feature has less time granted to develop a compelling mystery, it comes out on the short end of the stick for whodunit lovers.

That being said, and despite this being about two homicide cops with clashing personalities tracking down a group of sexual killers in the poor countryside, that's where the similarities end. There is no supernatural element to Marshland and there's a political subtext that was missing in the TV series. This subtext (about the end of Franco's dictatorship in the 1980s) is very impressive because of how subtly it creeps up on the crime plot, from being just a setting at first to becoming a major theme in the movie.

This is a more than solid film for fans of classic hard-boiled cinema. It has gorgeous cinematography and some scenes (like the discovery of the first body) are very impressively solved from a director's standpoint. There are a couple of big contrivances on the plot, but nothing that can't be overlooked.
