I don't know what prompted this post in this thread at this juncture, but I'm listening to Steve Roach's Structures From Silence now, so I'll throw a vote in for that. Actually, pretty much my three favorite albums of this decade are ambient/drone: Tim Hecker's Harmony in Ultraviolet, Deathprod's Morals and Dogma & Birchville Cat Motel's Beautiful Speck Triumph.

Really? I was sure I'd like it, but I ended up being very disappointed by it. Most of the songs were indistinguishable from one and other, and it sounded like cheesy WWF anthems more than the soaring punk rock I was promised.
There also is something to be said about audio production and good mixing, I feel. Apparently nearly every song on the final release was the first take of that song, and it shows. A lot of it sounded pretty sloppy to me, when with a little fine-tuning the guitars could have sounded clearer, and the bass and drums could have crunched more.

Why would you look down on people for this? I've heard many video game soundtracks that could stand head to head with some of the best film scores/composers. Meguro isn't one of them (JRPG soundtracks are largely overrated I feel, bar FFVI and maybe Chrono Cross).
Check out the Grim Fandango score (or really any of the classic LucasArts point-and-click masterpieces) or more adult games like Planescape: Torment/Alpha Centauri - games where every facet of its production was handled with the utmost care and excellence.

Oh, a lot of game music is great. Truthfully, I think a lot of the best game comes from Japan, specifically its RPGs (Meguro, Uematsu, Mitsuda, that guy who works with Suda51 and whose name I'm not looking up right now).
But have you ever met someone who listens mostly to game music? Who has an MP3 player chock full of SMB and Legend of Zelda remixes? They are annoying people.
I once got trapped into talking to this guy in my building who only listened to Cave Story soundtrack and various remixes. I hate him.

what do you think of the 3 song suite centerpiece "Snookered" --> "Surprise Stefani"?
It is very impressive, albeit quite exhausting to listen to in one go. The first three tracks and "Woof Woof" are my faves, though I'll give that sequence you mentioned a run through now. Seeing him tomorrow with High Places, should be good.

Yes keyin, yes! Love this album. I can understand how its hyperactivity (though compared to Spiderman... it's like he's been taking Ritalin) would drive someone more towards appreciation than outright enjoyment, but I can't get enough of this. I'm actually on my sixth time through since I first heard it about 24 hours ago. :)

If not, to recap, it's absolutely brilliant. Their 3rd best album, right behind The Unforgettable Fire and The Joshua Tree, and the first 4 songs on the album are as good as anything they've ever done.
It's also really great to see that Eno and Lanois are given full co-writing credits this time - it's like they are now officially the fifth and sixth members of the band.
Lyrically, it's not so great, but then again Bono has never been a proponent of subtlety or nuance. U2 is a band that paints with broad strokes.
I don't care how unhip it makes me - No Line on the Horizon is awesome. I'm on my 21st listen right now (and I just got it on Tuesday), and I imagine this will easily make my top 10 this year.

Fantastic . . . although I'd argue it may be slightly better than Joshua Tree (which loses slight momentum halfway thru, but is still, nonetheless, a great album). Agree with the broad strokes - it is not a subtle album, but one that revels in the flourishing sounds of the very beauty in the music. I was also a fan of Viva La Vida, although careful with whom I admitted that too. Sure the lyrics contained in both albums may lack, compared to the likes of Radiohead, for instance. But at least Coldplay and U2 insist on making rousing, beautiful music. I too have listened to No Line at least twenty times already.
Anyone here stoked about new Dylan and new Prince?

The accoustic version of Mississippi makes me want to cry it's so wonderful. Dreamin' of You and Can't Wait are pretty much mind-blowing, and the alternate version of Born in Time is one of the prettiest things Dylan's ever done. Yeah, I agree, it's amazing how prolific he is in the studio, and that he's left off so many great tracks over the years.
I've got high hopes for this new album. There's something enduring about the cover, and the things that have been said about the album sound like it'll fit right into the style and theme of MT and L&T.

Yeah, it is pretty amazing. To be honest, I'm more enamored by it because of the completely under discussed The Band (who you should totally listen to if you haven't), but Dylan is in fine form here. This is perhaps his last great work in fairness before he succumbed to his religious mysticism and age caught up with him.

The Band is indeed wonderful, but I vehemently disagree that this is Dylan's last great work. Age still hasn't caught up to him. Time Out of Mind is as good as nearly any album he ever made, and Modern Times is a half-step below that. Love and Theft is nothing to scoff at either. Well, most fans would say Daydream Nation, but for someone who is quite cynical about them, I would suggest listening to Sonic Nurse and then Murray Street and then Daydream Nation and then Evol a minimum of two times each.

It's a really excellent dub from Scratch's sublime Chapter 1 album, which had been compiled with the the legendary Blackboard Jungle Dub on the most excellent (and out-of-print) CD compilation, Scratch Attack!. The sound quality isn't very good. I dont know when/if these dub selections will ever appear on any remastered CD (were the masters lost when Scratch burned his studio down?), but they need to be: they're essential and stand head and shoulders above anything recorded and mixed during the same period.

The sound quality isn't very good. I dont know when/if these dub selections will ever appear on any remastered CD (were the masters lost when Scratch burned his studio down?)
Fucking awesome is what it is.

Love that picture.
I imagine there is a ton of reggae and dub music lost or in terrible condition because of poor storage conditions in those original "studios," studios that were little more than shacks with electricity run to them.

All the more reason to snag the great quality releases while you can (read: the true labors of love in terms of Jamaican reissues, and worth every single penny) from Motion Records, Pressure Sounds, and Blood and Fire. They won't be around forever! If not, you'll have to make do with Trojan, Heartbeat, et. al, not terrible options by any means, but still: get the soon to be out-of-print quality stuff while you still can.

I know it's ridiculous but I just discovered Tech-9. I'm listening to various tracks on youtube (Einstein is badass) and I need a CD recommendation for when I hit up the music store in Redmond tommorow.

I have been listening to so much Hawaiian pop music lately. Especially Hawaiian Style Band's Rhythm of the Ocean, which has been on repeat for the last couple days.

Yes. Yes, it is. I've just ordered their Vanishing Treasures album and am greatly looking forward to it.

Silver Apples - "A Pox On You"
Not sure why I waited so long to get to Contact, but it's unsurprisingly great. Not as awe-inspiring as their debut, though still light years ahead of its time. Love the use of the banjo on a couple tracks - it's probably the last instrument I'd imagine fitting into their sound.

"Save Me From What I Want" - St. Vincent
Unsurprisingly, I find this entire album divine. Possibly even better than the first. Certainly a more layered sound overall. Less catchy I suppose.

Haven't listened to this in a while... 18 was a good age. That Zach Braff guy's movie with Portman looks awesome.

So sleazily grandiose.
Yeah, I've decided that the opener Melody [Extrait de Melody Nelson] may in fact be one of the greatest tracks ever.

The Lovetones, "Something Good".
What is it about Australia that produces these amazing pop bands?
