TV on the Radio - "Stork and Owl"
I liked the album the first time I've heard it, but it keeps getting better and better another, say, 10 more times through. I can't quite say it's better than Cookie Mountain, but I could see being convinced of that argument by the end of the year, or next week.

It's very... ecstatic. It's a really solid production, and passionate. It's unapologetically metal, but the virtuosity GNR is famous for bringing to hard rock is there in spades. In short, if you like what they've done in the past, I see no reason to be disappointed in this, save for a distaste of NIN-ish industrial-type heaviness.
Allmusic's blog encapsulates my appreciation best: "Axl labored to create an ideal version of his inner world, working endlessly on a set of songs about his heartbreak, persecution and paranoia, topics well-mined on the Illusions."
"Even with these odd flourishes, it’s hard not to marvel, either in respect or bewilderment, at dense, immaculate wall of god knows how many guitars, synthesizers, vocals and strings."

The NIN sounding stuff is so dated. From what I've heard it sounds like an old dude trying to do what he thinks is still cool, but unfortunately that style has become stale. I'd appreciate it more if it were like Rob Halford's comeback album, Resurrection, which sounds as if the 1990s never happened. By not conforming to the sounds of the time, Halford made a new metal album that is pure metal, thus not dating himself or his infleunces. It remains an almost timeless entry into his discography, where as GNR now sounds like a band aping the sounds of others.
I still haven't heard the whole album, and I want to give it a fair chance.

Perhaps I'm not understanding you completely, but I think that's pretty unfair, particularly coming from someone so willing to talk about music as a universal, democratic artifact. Can not someone execute a sound, any sound, expertly? Did you like NIN at the time but do not like them any longer because their sound is stale? I am confused. I think the idea of criticizing a sound for exposing the time period in which it was constructed is exceptionally narrow.
D_Davis
11-23-2008, 06:38 PM
In an attempt to sound modern it ends up sounding dated, tired, and cheesy. The NIN-sounding, industrial stuff sounds like a poorly executed simulacrum of the real thing. It sounds cliche, like the "Industrial" and "techno" patches placed on keyboards years after the genre had already turned into a parody of itself.
Or you know how Christian rock bands always try to emulate a sound in an attempt to remain current, and yet they end up sounding like a poor-man's version of the original thing?
This is how the new GNR sounds to me.
But again, this is only based on a few tracks I've heard.
So call my view narrow, I care not. It's just a GNR album and not really that big of a deal to begin with.

I liked VIVIsectVI back in the day, but I don't think it's held up too well. The only 2 albums I still listen to are Last Rights and Too Dark Park. There are songs off of other albums I still like, but I don't care for the whole albums.
But damn, Last Rights is simple a masterpiece of sonic manipulation. Even beyond its industrial roots, the entire thing sounds fresh, exciting, dark, scary, and incredibly nuanced. Each piece (can we really call many of these songs?) is finely crafted and each is a singular work of art, but when combined the pieces form a whole album that transcends most albums of its genre.
I never saw them live. After seeing the Ain't Dead Yet video, I determined that I would not fit in at a Skinny Puppy concert. :)
They are a band I've always admired from a distance, like a lot of industrial music.

I can't. I know all their songs sound the same, but the energy they bring just gets my blood pumping. They're a flawed group, and I can only handle them in little bunches, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't like them. However, all of their new stuff is utter garbage. I have AC/DC Live, High Voltage, and Back in Black. That's all I care for.

Thing is, I'd agree with you if we're talking about their previous 5 albums (er...5 of the last 6 I guess since I haven't heard Milk Man for some reason), but this one seemed like a step down. Only listened to it twice though, so I wouldn't be surprised if it slowly grew on me.

I, too, love his vocals. They are so passionate. If you haven't yet, check out David Bazan and his band Pedro the Lion, and Greg Dulli and his band The Afghan Wigs. While stylistically different, the Kings of Leon kind of remind me of these bands, at least in the vocal department.

I think Apollo is one of his finest pieces. Of his classic albums, you can't go wrong with Another Green World or Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy).
I made an Eno compilation a while back, alternating instrumental and vocal songs...the underlying theme was "beauty" -- his most gorgeous tracks spanning a career of over 20 years and including a bit of his unreleased stuff. It's a really nice comp, it flows great, and it's the perfect sampler. If you (or anyone) would like a copy, pm me a ship-to address and I'll fix you up - freebie-style.

You can read that here:

I would definitely check out the work done by Harold Budd with Brian Eno:
Ambient 2 and The Pearl are both masterpieces.
Also:
1. Harold Budd and Clive Wright - A Song For Lost Blossoms
2. Bruce Kaphan - Slider: Ambient Excursions for the Pedal Steal Guitar
3. Steve Roach - Structures From Silence
4. Daniel Lanois - Belladonna
5. Marconi Union - Distance
6. Brian Eno and Robert Fripp - The Essential Fripp and Eno
7. Seefeel - Quique
8. John Foxx & Harold Budd - Translucence/Drift Music

10. Wes Willenbring - Somewhere Someone Else
