I know I'm not up on a lot of recent stuff, but how the heck did I miss the 2012 release, Unlimited Dubs by The Breadwinners? People, this is a FANTASTIC album. If I had a 2012 list, this would have been at or near the top.

current track: Love Me by War Tapes
it's telling that nearly every track from Express is on this
P.S. Oddly the last track called No Words No More is by Snowden and this was released in 2009.

Radiohead has such a wonderful reserve of music that has yet to be formally released as part of an album or as separate downloadable tracks (the masterful "Staircase," "The Daily Mail," "The Butcher," and "Supercollider" were all made available for download following the release of The King of Limbs). I find myself returning to these YouTube videos quite frequently (here's hoping that many of these songs make their way onto LP9; it seems likely that we'll get a studio version of "The Present Tense"):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chfq0g1iN4Y
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Q6zOVumLCY
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5sRWQ5BhYcE
Other examples: Ful Stop (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qau0irqY3GU), Follow Me Around (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00Laewtil7k), Open Floodgates (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JiPTuartURE), Honey Pot (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JiPTuartURE), Skirting on the Surface (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBwTQntjhqQ), among others.
"Cut A Hole" is mesmerizing. The ache of being distanced from a loved one is rendered magical and mellifluous. I admire it as a song of gentle, melancholic whimsy and keenly felt longing: a romantic reverie where time and space yield to the exigencies of the heart.

This new Jens Lekman mixtape takes me right back to that perfect sublimity that was Night Falls Over Kortedala. The lovely instrumentation and peppiness of the whole thing benefits from that omnipresent feeling of "this too shall pass"--in the end just as pessimistic a sentiment as it is optimistic--so that the heart-wrenching theme from Contempt, stuck right in the middle, feels right at home and takes the whole thing up a notch.
https://soundcloud.com/jens-lekman/wwjd-mixtape
Seriously, between this, Grouper's FACT mix from last year, and Erland Oye's contribution to DJ Kicks, these "mixtapes" can in a way be some of my favorite releases of any given year. And I don't know what to do about it.

Just when I thought my top 10 was finished:
D'Angelo.
One little x-mas present to myself was the 2013 release, Don't Think Right, It's All Twice, by People Like Us. I'll say it again: Vickie Bennett is a genius. I've loved her work (sound collage stuff, usually filed under 'Experimental') for almost 20 years, and I'm still amazed at how she continually reinvents herself as an artist.
This release seems like your standard mash-up album, but she's much too crafty and subversive for that. There's always a method to her madness (or as I'm sure she would say, a madness to her method). On paper, a pairing as eclectic as that of 60's Moog pioneers Perrey and Kingsley with Stravinsky's Night on Bald Mountain should never work. Here, it not only works, it's an integral part of a cohesive, thematic whole. There are too many highlights to mention, but I would be remiss if I didn't single out her new Christmas masterpiece, I'm Dreaming.
Since I'm about the only fan 'round here, here's my consensus of her "released" recordings (virtually all her work is available for free at her site or at UBUWEB. I purchased these since I like to support her endeavors.
A Guide To Broadcasting - 7.5
Beware The Whim Reaper - 7
Hate People Like You - 8
People Like Us Meet The Jet Black Hair People...In Concert! (with Wobbly) - 8.5
Hate People Like Us (remixes by various artists) - 7
Thermos Explorer - 7.5
Lassie House / Jumble Massive (reissue) - 8
A Fistful of Knuckles - 10
People Like Us and Friends - live, Vol. 1 - 7.5
Recyclopaedia Brittanica (greatest "hits") - 9
Wide Open Spaces (with Matmos and Wobbly) - 10
Nothing Special (with Kenny G) - 8.5
Music For The Fire (with Wobbly) - 8.5
Welcome Abroad - 6.5
Don't Think Right, It's All Twice - 9

The only album I have and have heard is A Fistful of Knuckles, and it is awesome.
Your next purchase should be Wide Open Spaces. With it's country/western theme, it's cut from the same cloth as Knuckles, but with the addition of the live instrumentation, courtesy of Matmos, it's more melodic (in places) and thus a bit more accessible. As great as FoK is, I give a slight nod to Spaces. There's a track, entitled "Morning", that is probably my favorite thing by her ever.

http://www.laverna.net/artists/gigi%20masin.jpg
GIGI MASIN was born in Venice on 24 October 1955. He has been a part of the music scene since the early 70’s. He worked with the most important national and local radio stations.
From 1978, he has been establishing a fertile collaboration with the poet and writer Massimo Palladino. This venture had been permitting to carry out many and important pieces, for theatre and for radio broadcasting, places where music and voices walk hand in hand, challenging and provoking themselves as well.
Sounds, tapes, turntables, live electronics are the ground where scene music moves. As a Musician and director , he has had a lot of theatrical and musical collaborations , from short films to staging and act designs.
The first solo album, (WIND) has been published in 1986. Many others will follow; some of those are “LES NOUVELLES MUSIQUES DU CHAMBRE” for the Belgian Label SUB ROSA (1989) with Charles Hayward, “WIND COLLECTOR” (1991) with Alessandro Monti. Most recent cds include “LONTANO” (2001) and “MOLTITUDINE IN LABIRINTO” (2003) with Giuseppe Caprioli, both produced by Giovanni Antognozzi for ANTS/SILENZIO DISTRIBUZIONE.
Many authors covered his mìusic, among the others The famous BJORK (the tracks that closes t her concerts it’s an homage to GIGI MASIN’s music), german bad TOROCOCOROT and pianist Luca MITI

The new AwolNation album, Run.
Given it a few spins, mostly like it, but it's more melancholic than Megalithic Symphony, with moodier production - synths borrowed from "Another One of My Turns" here, soft guitar bits that recall Pet Sounds there. Not on the same level of ambition as those records, but singular in its own way. The lyrics come off like "automatic writing," fun to sing along with but impenetrable at times. A little too reliant on repetitive drumbeats. Single "Hollow Moon" is a standout. Also enjoying "Kooks Everywhere," "JailBreak," and "Woman Woman." Megalithic was more dynamic in terms of the tone and attitude, but it was also more hit-or-miss on a song-by-song basis.

There will not be a better album this year.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-75-tUHIrQ
The word "epic" sits cheerily amid the most overused hyperbole of our age. Teenage bros proclaim their recent "pretty epic" mild successes; sports commentators call anything which ends dramatically an "epic game"; the Internet-literate are quick to point out an "epic FAIL." But what else do you call a three-CD, nearly three-hour album anchored by a 10-piece jazz band, featuring a 32-piece orchestra and 20-member choir, and driven by the daydream of an imaginary martial arts grandmaster?
The Epic is the title of the new recording from 34-year-old saxophonist and composer Kamasi Washington, a musician you may have heard but not heard of. That's his horn all over the newest releases by fellow Southern Californians Kendrick Lamar (http://www.npr.org/2015/04/09/398521315/there-is-a-rich-world-in-kendrick-lamars-to-pimp-a-butterfly) and Flying Lotus (http://www.npr.org/2014/10/12/354599863/music-from-deaths-doorstep-a-conversation-with-flying-lotus). (The Epic is being issued by Brainfeeder, the record label Lotus co-founded.) Washington has toured with Snoop Dogg, Raphael Saadiq and Chaka Khan; his jazz credentials include work with elders like Gerald Wilson, Stanley Clarke and Kenny Burrell. The singing electric bassist Thundercat (Stephen Bruner) and his brother, drummer Ronald Bruner Jr., are lifelong friends; in fact, Washington has known most of his bandmates since high school in in South Central Los Angeles.

That's a cool track, Russ.
Right now I am listening to the Far East Family Band's song Nagare from Tenkujin (Kitaro was long gone and this was their final album). Many comparisons to Pink Floyd and German Krautrock.
This is my favorite song by them.

This is from Leyland Kirby's massive 4-hour, 3-CD debut solo effort, Sadly the Future Is No Longer What It Was. As one of the primary figures in the (apparently recent) musical genre of "Hauntology" (mainly thru his guise as The Caretaker), his tracks on this 2009 Box Set release run the gamut, sometimes caustic, sometimes beautiful, but always fleeting and introspective. I listen to this release and I hear echoes of Harold Budd, Angelo Badalamenti and Brian Eno. This is the soundtrack for a film David Lynch has yet to make.
And this track, Tonight Is the Last Night of the World is simply exquisite.

Not only is Music Complete good, but it's possible one of New Order's best albums. It strikes the perfect balance between bangin' dance tracks and rock numbers, it is perfectly mixed (but mastered too hot - want to get it on vinyl), and totally infectious. My girlfriend, who listens to a lot of top 40 club music, as well as alt-stuff, said that the modern dance/club acts out there could learn a lot from this New Order album. And I agree. In addition to the music being dancey as fuck, it's also super melodic, and expertly crafted. The more rock-like songs are also top-notch, perfectly capturing all of the elements that made the band so fresh in the 80s, while also looking forward to what is to come.
Peter Hook leaving was the best thing to ever happen to New Order. While he is obsessed with the past, touring around playing all old Joy Division and New Order songs, the band themselves, bolstered by two new members bringing a fresh pair of ears to the table, has taken a firm and bold stance on the now and the future.
Music Complete is an absolute triumph. Easily the best album I've heard this year. Every single track is at least good, with more than half being outstanding, and the opening 5-track sequence is the strongest sequence of tracks New Order has ever put on a studio album.

Totally. It's earnest.
Totally. It's earnest.
D, if your description of earnestness was in reference to the Sam Stone-era, or any of his early, groundbreaking work (with which I am sadly unfamiliar), I would totally agree.
The little bit of his later work that I am familiar with (seemingly more playful, complete with scruffy vocals and all) strikes me more as "I'm having a good time and my body of work speaks for itself, so fuck off". That's what I was referring to. I love that attitude. I just really get the feeling he's having the time of his life because (a) he survived the early years, and (b) he totally earned it.
I want to get his Great Days anthology.

Pretty cool synth-wave stuff.
Getting a little tired of the sound, but he does it well.
I recently discovered this: Electronic System - Skylab (1974)
This is pretty much ground zero for all of this post-Air, retro-throwback synth stuff. Only, it was done in 1974.
It's basically all of Air's entire discography reduced to a single 10 minute track.

That said, perhaps one of this year's best finds comes from Luke Temple, who opened for Wye Oak. This song is killer:

I just downloaded their year-long project, Thinking About Thursdays. They recorded a new song every Thursday in 2016. 52 songs, 2 hrs, 19 minutes. I think it's the best thing they've ever done (and last week I said the same thing about the 4 seasons EPs).
And you turned me on to them.
What does it say about me that my current favorite musical artists (Lullatone, The Caretaker) make music that could classify as lullabies for infants and ghostly, 20's big band tunes for onset dementia patients?

The Used - The Canyon
Shocked by how good this album is. Easily the best thing The Used have released, lapping their promising debut and intermittently enjoyable follow-up In Love and Death. It's an hour-long ode to missing friends and suicide and political (but not too political) anger. The variability of the album is fantastic, as this intensely catchy uptempo pop-rocker gives no indication of the melancholy of "Upper Falls" or the embittered arena rocker "The Nexus," which is a more elevating version of the dissonant rage of "The Bird and the Worm."

Been a fan of Myers for years (since 2011 or so), she's still working for me.

That feels super 90s.
My music taste is bizarre lately.

Shaun Davey's The Parting Glass from 'Waking Ned'. I love the movie and Davey's rendition is just fucking awesome.

Kathryn Joseph. Scottish piano and voice. Listen if you dig Newsom, Bjork, or other "odd" voices. Saw her in Glasgow in the cold during an outdoor fest in December and have been taking to the quietness she brings.

I've been jamming consistantly to El-P, Run The Jewels and My Bloody Valentine for the last three weeks.

I've been in a phase of crunchy riffs by rock girls. Asked for recommendations over at Rate Your Music and found the following awesome bands: Bettie Serveert, Thee Headcoatees, Heron Oblivion, Team Dresch, Fastbacks, Dog Faced Hermans, The Geraldine Fibbers, The Stone Coyotes, Oh Sees, Chatmonchy, Scrawl, Acid King, Screaming Females

I've been taking a shine recently to Dawes. Was kind of meh on them for a long time, TBH, until I saw them live at an outdoor festival, and these days I am finding that they're great to listen to on a saturday afternoon while grilling.

Not sure the relevancy of AC/DC, but yes, that’s a very old picture of her, she’s probably ~20 years younger in that.

90's Indie rock band Hum dropped a surprise release Inlet on their bandcamp yesterday (https://humband.bandcamp.com/releases). The guitar tone is absolutely a delightful throwback, sludgy and punishing in spots and dreamy and atmospheric in others; I wish the drum rhythms had a bit more in the way of fills and personality, but it's a nice throwback. Recommended to those oldies on here.
Still need to listen to the new Perfume Genius a bit more; haven't found my way into that release yet.

A Secret Wish by Propaganda.
Cigarettes after Sex, horny sadcore that usually hits. I can't listen to a full album through at once however- too mopey.

Really digging this song, "Letter to Madeline" from Ian Noe. Feels like playing Red Dead Redemption.

They come up in my YouTube playlist often. I like them a lot even if their songs blur together.

I do love me up some Cigarettes After Sex, even if their band name is kinda dumb. Always a sucker for drums played with a brush and some slow slidey guitar sounds.
Heavenly is the kind of song I would want to play at my wedding for a first dance.
