Wvf0kbefvboI had previously heard Happy Pills thanks to NPR, and both of those tracks are really great and different from some of her previous work, of which I have not heard much of aside from some singles. So now I'm interested in checking out that album myself.

As for The Shins, I've always liked them but they have yet to make a truly great album. Sure I've given all of their discs *** 1/2 out of ****, but its more of a lurkwarm *** 1/2-I'm thinking more ***'s is right, but I'm a fan of their work regardless. So at some point yes I'll buy their latest, although I wish that James Mercer had just kept doing Broken Bells with Danger Mouse instead.

So while Kevin Shields was busy remastering his old songs, and not making anything new, The Stargazer Lilies have been making an album that is blowing Loveless out of the water. No wonder Shields isn't making anything new - he's probably heard this stuff and asked himself "what's the point?"

One of the best tracks off of The Rolling Stones' legendary album, Sticky Fingers. Recently I gave the disc another listen, and I realized that the only weak track on the entire thing is You Gotta Move, which is still a good song. However, I still think that Let It Bleed is the better of the two, which I also own in addition to the quite great Some Girls. That said, as much as I like The Stones I would probably be fine with just owning only a couple more of their albums, or grabbing their Greatest Hits so I can have some of the other hits I've heard over the years.

Downloaded the new Childish Gambino mixtape but haven't gotten much traction with it. All the guest spots seem to more-or-less drown out his actual contribution. The main impression I've gotten so far has been Tina Fey's horrendously awkward verse that ends the album.

Feel like there's almost an unprecedented number of releases I'm anticipating over the next couple of months, like every indie band decided to release albums all at once. I mean you've got:

Aug. -- Kanye West (and co.), WHY?, Yeasayer, Ariel Pink, Dan Deacon

Sept. -- Animal Collective, Jens Lekman, Mt. Eerie, Cat Power, St. Vincent & David Byrne, Grizzly Bear, Menomena, Lupe Fiasco

Plus new Mountain Goats & Cody ChesnuTT soon after, man.

The new Swans album is an absolute beast in every way possible. 2 hours, including one 30-minute and two 20-minute tracks, of epic, face-melting music. I liked their last album a lot, but it's pretty clear that was a dry run for The Seer.

Yep, seeing them in LA on September 11th...could it be the apocalypse!?? Seek within your soul and you may find the album.

I know Gira's on record pleading for people to wait for the official release, but I'm paying $40+ to see them live, plus I'll buy the LP (and a shirt if there's a good one) at the show, so I can live with myself. :)

After four years I finally got them to put a new stereo in my work truck with an input for my ipod (I was previously stuck with a non-working cd player stereo and I hate the radio) so I broke it in with:

The Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour
Genius/GZA - Liquid Swords

Today I decided I'll go through my ipod and listen to my albums in order so today was:

St. Vincent - Actor (This is like my third time listening to this album and I don't care for it. It's not bad just after a few songs I'm ready to turn it off. Blind bought it off recomendations)
Jay-Z - American Gangster (actually my first time listening to this, pretty good mid-level Jay-Z album)

Always.

I never listen to anything on shuffle. I can't remember the last time I did. For me, it's a whole album or nothing, and if a band doesn't make a good album they aren't worth my time.

EDIT - sometimes I'll shuffle my songs to pick which album I'll listen to.

Another head scratcher of a statement from you. So in your mind 7" singles are basically worthless?

D_Davis
09-09-2012, 03:19 PM
Albums aren't singles - I wasn't talking about singles. If I had been, I would have said singles.

I'll listen to some singles as whole things, but if a song is on an album I'll just listen to the whole album, and not in bits and pieces.

I also prefer EPs and LPs over singles, and I don't happen to like many bands/acts that just release singles.

I prefer the thought that goes into a whole EP/LP, the art of making an album is something that I admire far more than making a single track.

Milky Joe
09-10-2012, 12:05 AM
Wasn't trying to be snotty, it just seems kind of arbitrary to me. There's plenty of art to a good 7", and some of my favorite songs of all time are on that format. Then again, you don't really listen to actual records do you? So it all kinda runs together.

Pet Shop Boys, Elysium

The new Pet Shop Boys is pretty dang good. Not the Behavior-level accomplishment that I was hoping for after hearing the first two tracks, but a great album nonetheless. It is more in line with Behavior, in that it's slower, more introspective, and far less dance orientated. Musically, it is great; it's beautiful, lush, and expertly arranged (recorded mostly in-the-box, with very little use of hardware synths and gear). But I'd expect nothing less from the boys. Lyrically, though, it's rather weak, and this is the main problem with the album. It's too straight forward, and lacks the delicious irony and scathing humor of Behavior.

About half of the tracks are amazing, and the first two tracks ("Leaving" and "Invisible") rank among the band's best. Also coming up tops is "With a Face Like That," (a brilliant track that hearkens back to "Love Comes Quickly" and "Domino Dancing"), "Ego Music," (an on-the-nose, scathing jab at Lady Gaga et al.), and "Requiem in Denim and Leopardskin" (a groovy little lounge tune dripping with nostalgia).

Half of the remaining tracks are OK (including "Your Early Stuff," a humorous review of an aging artist looking back, perhaps the PSB finding themselves shocked that they're still doing what they're doing), but the rest aren't so hot (the worst of the bunch is "Winner," a track written, unfortunately, for the Olympics, yuk; it's drowning in cheesiness).

So yeah - the album is not as good as one of the best pop albums ever recorded. So be it. To expect a modern pop album to be as good as Behavior is asking for a lot. It is, instead, another solid PSB album, and a solid PSB album is better than many bands at their best.

Sven

Continuing:
Girl Talk - All Day (fantastic album, everytime I'm playing this and anybody else is around they want it)
Interpol - Antics (I really like "Evil" but besides maybe one or two other songs this album does nothing for me. It's ok and I don't dislike any of the songs but no connection.)
Outkast - ATLiens (I have never heard a great Outkast album. They have three or four good songs on each album but 60-75% of each album is sleep inducing.)
Wale - Attention Deficit (a really good album marred by some weak hook choices throughout the middle part of the album. But still he's quite a charismatic rapper. I want to hear more from him.)

Jadakiss - I Love You (A Dedication to my Fans)

First off this album is terrible. If this is his dedication to his fans he must hate them. Second off I like Jadakiss he's a talented rapper but if he says he's "top five dead or alive" in one more song I'm gonna scream. If I was being generous MAYBE Top 100 (and that's being extremely generous). I don't know anyone in their right mind who could possibly believe that. That would be like if Jason Terry was going around saying he was one of the top five NBA players dead or alive. People would tell him to shut the fuck up. More people should be telling Jadakiss that.

"Blue Jeans" is my favorite song of hers, good choice. "Summertime Sadness", "Backfire", and "Ghetto Baby" are also of note. She's not big stateside by any means. i'm with you on this, she is a complete and utter artistic fraud.

"Blue Jeans" is my favorite song of hers, good choice. "Summertime Sadness", "Backfire", and "Ghetto Baby" are also of note. She's not big stateside by any means. Her claim to fame this side of the pond is bombing on SNL and having Kristin Wiig play her the following week on Weekend Update. Her charisma makes up for any vocal shortcomings she has.

Charisma, pin-up girl style, gothic lyrics...I looked up the SNL performance I thought it was quiet human and elegant. People are haters.

Not sure why I didn't get into this band a hell of a lot sooner.

Meat Puppets - Too High to Die

Why I didn't try these guys earlier, despite my Nirvana fandom, is a mystery.

Saw a really weird, obscure 1971 British indie film called Duffer (imagine a cross between Deep End and Eraserhead), with a terrific score by Galt MacDermot. Even more amazing is the fact that the music has become more known for being sampled by hip-hop artists.

First, the song from the film, then the remix.

Davis - There's a new Burger/Voigt collab out under the name of Mohn. Listening to it now and while it's no Las Vegas, it's pretty damn solid.

How can a lullaby be creepy but comforting at the same time? When Zooey Deschanel sings it.

They should use this in the next Freddy Krueger remake.

Ha. Might have known that it's a radical remix of one of their most popular songs with Scratch assuming the Rickie Lee Jones role.

But, you are correct, it's very good.
