Dorothy Ashby - The Windmills of Your Mind ****/**** In a word, irresistible. Impeccable production, pure class act.

Bear in Heaven - Casual Goodbye **/**** Art/prog aspirations aside, it's more bore than bear.

just a 12" with one other song and two remixes. none of the tracks even come close to "ocean" though

The Feelies - Way Down

finally figured out a way to go through all my unlistened 2011 releases without constantly skipping to my favorites. i just put them all in a playlist and listen to only that playlist

what i've listened to the past few days:

good:
Gucci Mane - The Return Of Mr. Zone 6
Kode9 & The Spaceape
Kurt Vile - Smoke Ring For My Halo
Horrid Red - Silent Party EP
Vee Dee - Vee Dee
White Fence - Is Growing Faith

bad:
Psychadelic Horseshit - Laced
Foster The People - Torches

meh:
Dead Rider - The Raw Dents

Clearly, Skipper Dan's interest in performance was really all about the pursuit of fame and wealth. He could name-drop Uta Hagen, but he had no respect and love for the artform. To be honest, it was evident in his performances. Early on, he was able to impress critics and audiences with his technique, purchased as it was from Julliard, that empty factory for would-be soap opera stars. But ultimately, the truth caught up with him. He had no heart. He couldn't reflect humanity because he had no love for humanity.

I don't wish sadness and dissatisfaction on anyone. But Skipper Dan's fate is no more or less than he deserves. And if he holds contempt for his current occupation, well, that is no surprise. Skipper Dan holds contempt for life itself.

I'm also getting really tired of people using the word "faggot" like they're 12 years old. I bought the Tyler the Creator album "Goblin" since it's gotten so much hype and it was onsale for $5 on amazon. Not my thing at all. I'm also getting really tired of people using the word "faggot" like they're 12 years old. If you hate gay people and use the word at least I can understand that but using the word as a "diss" without the gay context I had hoped that people had matured past that.
sounds like "you don't get it"

and what i mean by that is if you listen to the album and you come to the conclusion that he hates gay people, then you're listening to it wrong. he's an immature 19-year-old (20-year-old?) who uses words in the most offensive way he can think of to do exactly that. whether the listener should consider that a valid excuse to actually say these execrable things is up to them

it's not a great album by any stretch of the imagination (it's way too long for one), but it's exciting to listen to, and makes a much more interesting listen than most rap records now

plus "bitch suck dick" is hilarious

also, he definitely needs to evolve lyrically, unless he wants to be pigeonholed as an immature kid who uses the vile content of his lyrics to shock "white america"

he's a talented guy. it's evident in the fact that he's responsible for every audio and visual aspect of his projects

Yeah, it's not that he hates gay people. It's that he's purposefully being as offensive as possible with the goal in mind being to sound as offensive as possible. It's not that he believes in anything he's saying, but rather wallows in the excrement of sexism, homophobia and racism to the point where the filth loses its fury because he refuses to use half-measures in his rapping about stupid, offensive things.

But not really. I fucking hate that album, in case that wasn't clear. The guy's like Neil Hamburger, only not as good of a rapper.

i think he has a ton of potential, and it kinda sucks that he blew up so early in his development as an artist that i don't think that potential will ever be fully realized. that he'll be stuck in a state of arrested development ("hey that's the name of the show!")

i'm hoping earl's return will be a catalyst for something new and exciting, instead of a rehash of their old stuff

Just like in alot of recent comedies the use of the word "faggot" when it's not applicable "in the haha I'm saying faggot but not too a gay person so it's ok and hilarious" is not funny to me nor do I find it offensive.

But then again, it has previously been established that Acapelli and I have diametrically-opposing views of what good hip hop is.

It's a complete departure. Jazzy more like Brainfeeder or Stones Throw, if anything, but it's mainly the unpredictability and frequently jarring minimalism that make it so fresh. Actually, I think it's the only album I can fully get behind so far this year, unless Street Halo counts.

Over the past year or so I've been working out a lot more and so I've been fashioning my ipod in such a way that the only music on it is uptempo type music. I have a bunch of qualifiers for what can be on the overall mix like even if it's an awesome song if the first 20 seconds are silence I can't have it on there and if the song is just overall slower it can't be on my mix. This is generally how I go about listening to music anyways since I've never been big on lyrics since I don't comprehend them, for me it's more about how it's sung then the content of what is sung. Because of this I've been doing more listening to bands I hadn't really given a try to but I do it with these ideas in place so I just skip slower songs and only go for the more pulse pounding songs. Since I have a lot of music I haven't listened to I've been going through bands quite quickly.

Today is Dream Theater day, I've listened to almost all of their music today.

ever since soulja boy hooked up with lil b, i feel like he's improved tremendously. he's always been a great swagger jacker (before lil b, he was biting brick squad's style) and an incredible producer (listen to this: sUcr24DFxvA, that drum pattern is incredible even if his rapping is substandard). He's still really young, and i see a lot of potential. then again, i actually really liked crank dat when it came out (i even remember when it was only a regional hit and making the rounds on the blogs and i was bumping it) and been a big fan of pretty much all his singles

guys like fabolous and jadakiss make the same albums over and over again, they bore me. you've heard one, you've heard them all. the east coast scene is so stagnant right now. but i haven't heard the latest fab tape though i've heard good things

also, keep in mind that wasn't an all time list. just stuff that i dig currently from artists that are still generating music on a regular basis. all of the above have released something in 2011. and to be clear, pretty sure none of these guys would be in my all-time list (maybe lil b)

as for andre3000, i love it when he raps, but he seems to only drop the occasional guest verse here and there

I don't understand, though. Your first point in defense of Soulja Boy is that he steals shit, and he's good at it. Then you admit his rapping is sub-standard in the clip you put up, while dismissing Fabolous and Jadakiss for being redundant.

Here's what he talks about in the clip you put up:

He's awesome.
He gets high a lot.
He has guns.
He has money, too. And jewelery.
Some people robbed him.

Sure, the beat is good. I just don't see the appeal. A lot of it comes down to credibility, and he's got none. Kat Stacks took a shit on him, too. Compare him to someone like Fabolous:

alCtHnIXYwk

He balances mainstream popularity with a tight style almost to perfection. Soulja Boy might be trying out different stuff right now, along with some of those other guys, but, overall, it wont touch the delivery you'll find in something like the new Bad Meets Evil album by more established and honed artists.

It's really unfair to compare anyone to Jay-Z or even Eminem in my opinion. For the 00's, they're the only rappers that can almost create their own beat with their lyrics. It's very impressive. Unfortunately, Eminem's songs are so played out on the radio that I hate them within a month.

Jay-Z's stuff never gets radioplay, so I always love it.

I'm definitely with you in thinking the second half is the better of the two, but calling anything "watered down Goslings" is kind of unfair. I'm not sure I want anything non-Goslings to be as noisy and harsh as Goslings. :) I think the A-sides still have a pretty sweet mix of noise rock and post-hardcore and build nicely into the more esoteric B-sides.

Certainly the compositions in the Sunset Rubdown recordings seem more expansive and interesting, but there's something more catchy about Wolf Parade and I have definitely listened to it more over the past few days. In any case, onward to At Mount Zoomer and Random Spirit Lover.

So much rep.

Personally I'd take Apologies, which is probably the most consistently awesome album Krug's worked on, but Shut Up has some amazing highs though and there are days when I think he's never topped "Stadiums and Shrines II". I'll definitely be interested to see what you think of At Mount Zoomer and Random Spirit Lover, which definitely left people more split than the prior albums, as sophomore albums tend to do. Zoomer is wildly inconsistent, but thoroughly enjoyable even when it meanders a bit. Random Spirit Lover is one of my favorite albums of the 00s and seems to be an album that either blows people away or leaves them rolling their eyes at its excesses. It's my favorite album Krug's worked on, even though Apologies is probably the one he should be remembered for.

I always found "Mount Zoomer" to the most consistent of Wolf Parade's albums and can listen to it all the way through without skipping any tracks. The same can't be said for the other two albums but they are still solid. Love this band.

Speaking of Scratch Acid, Mark Prindle's intro to them on his review site (http://markprindle.com/scratch.htm) is one of the best pieces of writing ever.

Hello there! I'm the guy that burglarized Mark Prindle's home while he was on vacation in Arizona! I was just about to trade this nice computer with the flat screen for a puddle of liquid drug juice when I ran across Mark's delightful music review page. Well, I'm nothing if not a piece of human shit, so I thought I would contribute a page of my own! I may be a drug-addled worthless prick, but there's a band from Texas called Scratch Acid that I like a lot! Mind you, I don't listen to them very often because I sold all of my possessions (along with several of other people's!) for one marijuana joint, but I can still remember how much I enjoyed listening to them back in the days when I would carefree smash car windows and throw peoples' babies out into the street. The band featured a young David Yow (soon to be singer of The Jesus Lizard), a young David Wm. Sims (soon to be bassist of Rapeman and The Jesus Lizard) and a young Rey Washam (soon to be drummer for Big Boys, Didjits, Helios Creed and a bajillion other bands) and a guitarist. They sort of sounded like they wanted to be an American version of Australia's sick noisemakers The Birthday Party (especially Yow, who tried something terrific to imitate Party vocalist Nick Cave). Speaking of The Birthday Party, let me know if you have one so I can steal the cake like an asshole.

Get out of my IPod! Yeah, I've been listening to them the past couple days, including right now when I checked in this thread. :) Really liked Goat, but Liar is fantastic and a bit more consistent. Real good stuff - "Slave Ship" definitely is one of the highlights.

I like the last one more than this newest one. The last one is probably my favorite of his - more texture and variety.

This newest one is very drone-y.

That's cool. I just don't get that kind of hip hop. :D

It lacks everything I look for in hip hop: a good beat, good lyrics, good delivery, good production

in all seriousness, i can see the appeal but i don't like it. his def poetry jam flow is the most irksome aspect of the song to me. he barely acknowledges the beat (which i also don't like, mainly for the annoying vocal sample)

he's a talented lyricist, but that's about it

Acapelli

and i don't think it's an age thing, because 16-17 year old me would eat that stuff up. i was way more into "conscious" hip hop back then

basically, thinking about this more, my taste has mirrored kanye's artistic evolution (to a point). he started off rapping and producing for guys like saul williams, slum village, common and dilated peoples and i used to love that stuff. but now you're more likely to see him associating with dudes like rick ross, pusha t, lil wayne and young jeezy and rapping over beats by lex luger (one of brick squad's producers) and tweeting about odd future

Yeah, probably the same for me, along with the slightly re-worked "That's My Bitch". It's sort of a shame in that way that it comes first on the album, but it's a perfect opener. I didn't even realize that was The-Dream in the middle part until I read the credits. Good stuff.

Also, "Illest Motherf**ker Alive" and "Primetime" are probably two of the strongest songs of the bunch, but they're reduced to only being on the Deluxe version, along with the very good "The Joy" (formerly a G.O.O.D. Friday release) and the less worthy "H*A*M" (the M, evidently, stands for "Meh"). I think this will be the sort of album I start to really enjoy once I make my own custom tracklist.
