"2024," Cage the Elephant

Don't know much about their debut album, but a friend of mine told me their new album was the best radio-played album he had heard in a long, long time. I checked it out and yeah, it's pretty rad. Basically, this album is about 18 years too late to the Nirvana/Pixies party, but damn does it have some great tunes though it also has a couple mediocre modern alt. rock songs as well. Still, pretty cool to see a fairly mainstream group in 2011 producing music like this.

I found the new deadmau5 extremely unimpressive. He's been in steady creative decline in the studio since Random Album Title despite all his fancy gadgets. The new release switches between being generic/more-of-the-same-old-shit to just plain grating in the case of the dubstep tracks at which point I turned it off.

I listen to both, but tend towards free music. I'm not a huge fan of Hecker, although I do like some of his stuff. I find that a lot of his stuff has a lot of high-end and more white/pink noise, with less mid and bass. This seems to be the way of the new-ambient artists; I often the music to be more piercing than what I like.

However, I do really like some of it.

I don't think I've heard the album you mentioned, but I will check it out.

Really? I'm not sure if you're pointing it out as a highlight, because of all songs, upon my first couple of listens I would have pegged Call Me Back as my least favourite. I eventually warmed to that song a bit more, and Metabolism likely now stands as the worst for me (if I had to choose), but that doesn't mean I think it's terrible either.

Only criticisms I really have with the album are that it isn't very well sequenced (which is usually a strength of their stuff) and that its made up of more '80s cheese experimentation, which I admittedly love, instead of building more around the stronger, more signature Strokes-y stuff like Taken For A Fool and the first single. It may help that I love Phrazes of the Young, seeing as much of Angles basically acts as more of a continuation of the sound established with that album than First Impressions Of Earth, but in the end, I find myself having very few complaints with there being a new Strokes album in the world and having the songs of Angles being the music that signifies that.

no, that was just the track that i had had been listening to at the time. "Under Cover Of Darkness" and "Two Kinds Of Happiness" are the only real standouts on the album, but both are really great and a departure for them, not just a rehash of their earlier hits. the radiohead aping is a huge misstep and the rest of the album just isn't memorable in the least

edit: and now listening to "Under Cover Of Darkness"

I'm really digging them. Do you have any recs of other ambient-driven Krautrock groups?

Have you heard any Cluster? Cluster II, Zuckerzeit and Sowiesoso are all pretty great.

There's also Tangerine Dream, Harmonia's Deluxe (an offshoot of Neu, but more ambient and equally as good) and Ashra's New Age of Earth. More recently, Arp's In Light comes to mind. There must be other great ones out there, but most of the others I'm coming up with are more rock based. Davis and Boner should be able to help...

Davis and Boner should be able to help...
Hey! Cred here..

Many ambient-ish / spiritual / avant garde / prog rock-ish fish in this pool:

Most any of Conrad Schnitzler's (Cluster) solo stuff.
Since you're a fan of Popol Vuh, look for anything by violinist Eberhard Schoener (Sky Music, Mountain Music).
Also, check out Aum, by Deuter (another Popol Vuh contemporary), a fusion of Eastern and Western religious music comprised of acoustic instruments and natural sounds.
Klaus Schulze's (Tangerine Dream) solo work is work checking out too.
Of course, there's the more fringe (prog-rock ) stuff like Amon Duul II, Ash Ra Temple, Guru Guru, etc...

Once you've exhausted the German scene, there is a wealth of early Japanese electronic/spiritual music to explore. Start with the Far East Family Band and just google your way from there.

Do people ever listen to music that comes out in December? It's a shame, but around that time I always think in terms of the past 11 months and forget about new music.

The Soft Moon s/t
I missed this one (late November). Sucks because I might like it more than Weekend's Sports (what I said was my favorite rock record last year). It's straight-up 80s goth/post-punk. Rhythmically it's very Joy Division-esque, though tonally more like the Cure at their most paranoid, which makes the occasional sustained blast of white guitar noise seem necessary rather than simply tacked-on.

New TV on the Radio, not so much. I'll hold off until I give it at least a few more listens, it feels like these guys are on cruise control.

yeah, it's not doing anything for me, and i really loved the last two.

Clark Gable-The Postal Service. The beats here are excellent, and I love the lyrics. Give Up may be a ***/**** album at best, but I'm still a fan-and I actually wish there would have been another album from the duo.

Yeah, it's good but lacks the creative bite of their former albums which is what sold me on them.

Joanna Newsom ...

How long does it take to get used to this voice?

It's an acquired taste... one that I acquired a liking to very quickly. Your results may vary.

Infinity. Unless you like Muppet singing.

I don't know. I like Kate Bush and Corin Tucker and PJ Harvey, so I'm ok with a little vocal eccentricity, but this isn't really working for me. Maybe I'll try a different album.

I dunno, her singing style has become more conventional over the span of her three albums. What did you listen to, Spinal?

Nonsense. I know several people who hated her initially and now love her.

I agree with Boner that her voice has become more conventional with each album (though don't get me wrong, I love em all), particularly from Ys to Have One on Me. But if you can't take her on something like "Good Intentions Paving Company", then she's probably not for you.

This reminds me I didn't spend nearly enough time with Have One On Me last year. "Baby Birch" is probably her finest song.

Yeah, I'd check out her latest first. She sounds more like Kate Bush there.

It's definitely top 5 and the best on that album. What a build.

Speaking of slow builds, the final 2 minutes of this one, both lyrically and musically, absolutely kill me.

She's certainly an acquired taste but I adore her immensely. I saw her live last year for the first time and she blew my mind. Soooo talented.
