I certainly hope Jeepers Creepers 2 falls quick, unless you're just rating the opening.

My review:


I enjoyed the first film quite a bit. I remember when it came out a lot of people were put off by the monster having wings. Personally, I thought that was when the film got interesting. Either way, when this landed on Netflix, I queued it right away. The sequel provides a whole busload of shirtless teenage boys to be killed and eaten. The monster has graduated from something shadowy and unknown to a flying pedophile who taunts his young male victims with lip-licking and bedroom eyes. I'm not even exaggerating. The film starts out as a typical horror film, but changes into an action film near the end, when a vengeful farmer with a spear gun comes into play. Admittedly, these are some of the better scenes in the movie, mostly because the horror end of the film isn't scary at all. Much of the horror is played for laughs, sometimes even veering into "cartoon-y." Overall, not a bad continuation of the story, but nothing to keep me (or other audiences, apparently) coming back for more.

It is indeed. As a high school teacher, I can see how spending two hours with these kids may have grated on some, but I found it compassionate and honest.

High and Low is one of my favorite movies of all time. I think that the scene in the alley is so amazing: scary and sad and atmospheric all at once.

And even though it's falling down your list, I'm also glad to see the love for Blue Ruin, which I thought was absolutely fantastic. For me it struck just the right balance between action and adrenaline and real-life drama. I think that having such a solid, lived-in leading performance really helps. It makes me a little sad to think that it's really flown under the radar for a lot of people.

Yeah, I've seen a few Kurosawa films just recently, and have struggled a little with some of the over-the-top acting he often encouraged, but High and Low skirts that trap and has its own unique structural rhythm.

Agreed. And while I have nothing against Samurai, I love 50s-era thrillers. I think that High and Low has one of the most satisfyingly paced and plotted thriller plots, with several "wow" scenes like the train ransom drop, the addict alley sequence, and the final confrontation.

I also quite enjoy seeing Mifune being so passionately agitated about the fact that women need sturdy, well-made shoes. Preach, Mifune! Preach!

Whatever happened to B-side? I wonder if he can sense, in some other part of the world, somewhere, that I finally watched the Raoul Ruiz film that he recommended (also my first Ruiz), and loved it. Like, maybe he randomly smiled or suddenly felt a little better, and he doesn't know why, and never once that day even thought about Match Cut... but this is why. Godspeed, B-side.

Also, randomly saw a Sirk joint at the Lightbox because I had a voucher left over I had to use before it expired (it was the only thing playing at the time, part of the Dreaming in Technicolor program happening atm). Never seen a Sirk joint before, either, but I also loved this. It's fairly blunt but nevertheless effective, and visually... wow. It's gorgeous. Incredible art direction, incredible sets (that fake movie snow... I love it so much). Sirk's staging is fantastic throughout, too. The way he shoots the argument between the mother and son, with the screen between them... brilliant. One of the best movie images I've seen this year. Almost lost me with the final scenes leading up to the ending (and I'm not sure why Sirk wanted to pursue that direction, as it seems to have nothing to do with what the story is about), but this is one where I feel the happy ending is the right ending.

Odd that you say that. I think I started really getting into movies when I had to take a night shift. I'd watch 1 or usually 2 films each night before going to work at 11 pm.

Yeah, I've heard the same from a lot of people. That's what I was hoping to do, but I think I'm just too old / not cut out for that shit. I was just tired and exhausted all the time and often couldn't get out of bed. I tried to watch a few movies but would usually wind up sleeping through them. I didn't like it, probably never doing it again.
