Well maybe real-world quality-wise, but in terms of awards momentum, Keaton is definitely taking C/M while it could really be any of the men in Drama. (Most likely Cumberbatch. Oyelowo is newer, more of a dark horse pick.)
I've only seen Foxcatcher, Nightcrawler, and Grand Budapest out of all those actors' films though.

I would be shocked if Keaton loses the Golden Globe. In the Oscar derby I think he has some competition with Steve Carell, but Birdman has a lot more momentum at this point.

Yes, but Oyelowo has some competition in that genre (Benedict Cumberbatch and Eddie Redmayne). Is that the dude from the Wu Tang Clan? (Incidentally, I really don't know who Eddie Redmayne is. I think 2014 will turn out to be the year when I officially become an old man who doesn't understand pop culture references and therefore continues alluding to Third Eye Blind in everyday conversation like it was still 1997.)

It's always a pleasure.I don't know how familiar you are with Rex Reed's writings, but I've heard this song many a time before. Here's a guy with tastes so conservative and is so utterly lacking in curiosity that he makes the average Academy voter look like David freakin' Bordwell, so I'm not surprised that he didn't like Under the Skin or that he loved The Theory of Everything. (I am a little surprised that he liked The Grand Budapest Hotel but unfortunately he doesn't have anything interesting to say about it.)

I'm pleased that Wes Anderson's film jumped ahead of Birdman; it's settling as one of my favorites of his work.
Otherwise, I'm pleased that a few actors won for not merely playing a real-life figure. The bio-pic is my most hated genre, so seeing Simmons and Moore and Keaton take wins is altogether pleasing.

It was. He loved that joke too.
I dunno, I'm pretty disappointed with the results myself. It just feels like, even in a year where the movie's I'm rooting for actually feel like shoe-ins to win for once, even then they still don't. I dunno, Boyhood and GBH were good, sure, but damn Selma and Birdman were so, so much better. :\
Pretty pleased with Keaton's win, however...

Mostly as expected for Picture, with the only weird blemish being Bennett Miller coming out of nowhere for Best Director and yet his Foxcatcher didn't show up in Picture. Gone Girl, Nightcrawler proved to be too dark and weird to land spots.
No Chris Nolan nod or Interstellar BP nod. Hollywood fail.
Nah, even as someone who loved the movie, it had not shot. Once it came out and was as divisive as it was, it was never squeezing in with the more straightforward (boring) likes of Imitation Game.

Interstellar was never gonna happen.
Surprised at lack of noms for Oyelowo, Fincher & Flynn. Thought those were shoe-ins. Brain froze when they announced the animation noms because it felt like something was missing. A thousand nerds cried out on twitter, and then were silenced. And I cackled like a nutjob.
I yelled at the screen any time Theory of Everything was mentioned in any context.
Cheered loudly at Reese Witherspoon's nom.
Cheered quietly when Unbroken picked up a few nods.
It's almost impossible not to sound like a rightwing nutjob when I say this, but: Since Unbroken is out of the running for most major awards, I hope American Sniper wins everything it was nominated for.

Disappointed that the lead actor nominees only has one role not based around a biopic portrayal.
Pleased that the Aniston resurgence failed, and that Cotillard snuck in.
Also pleased that Ida received a cinematography nominee.
Depressed that the best songs category is so stupid that none of We are the Best or God Help the Girl (which I admittedly still have to see) could be nominated.
Super-excited that Takahata's film got mentioned.

On the bright side, maybe now that Whiplash has been nominated they'll bring it back to theaters for longer than a week this time. :P

I'm at the point now where I don't care one way or the other who gets nominated. As much as I don't think Interstellar is anywhere near one of the best films of the year, I wouldn't have cared if it got a nomination, and as much as I think Gone Girl was excellent, the fact it got just one nomination doesn't bother me.
I look at the list of for Best Picture and think, wow, that looks pretty weak, and then I go and see 2011:
The Artist
The Descendants
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
The Help
Hugo
Midnight in Paris
Moneyball
Tree of Life
War Horse
and think, bloody hell, that was a weak year, and then 2008
Slumdog Millionaire
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Frost/Nixon
Milk
The Reader
and think, no, that was a weak year, and then I realize.....why do I care again? It has always been full of weak movies and performances, and "shocks" that are only shocks because they weren't first concocted and discussed to death by the incestuous "Oscar prognosticators" who on one hand decry the stuffiness of the Academy while at the same time create lists of what they think the Academy will favor, thus reinforcing the rules for the crappy game they (for some reason) devote a lot of their journalistic attention to.
I know no-one likes people on the internet loudly proclaiming how much they really don't care about something, so I promise this will be the last time I speak about the Oscars ever again on any message board for any reason. Should be a pretty easy resolution to stick to.

A lot of people consider Cooper insanely good looking. Personally, I never saw it; on some level he will always be the wimpy dude on a Alias to me.
As for range ... He went from playing a CGI racoon to a US Navy SEAL within the same year. How's that not an exhibition of range?

He had impressed me in other roles prior to this, but I would definitely say that Pines is his best performance to date.

I thoughts the effects in Guardians were pretty average, actually. They're fine, they work. But I dunno...and Dawn should roll right up to the podium for this one.

I'm generally resigned to the Oscars at this point in my filmwatching, but I found this passage from Andrew O'Hehir (http://www.salon.com/2015/02/20/birdman_vs_boyhood_the_oscars_ race_to_save_hollywoods_soul/) interesting:
You could certainly read social, cultural and psychological meaning into the close race between “Birdman” and “Boyhood.” I would agree, for instance, that the quasi-documentary naturalism and unprecedented production process of Linklater’s film represents a connection to lived American experience (quite likely a disadvantage when it comes to Oscar voters), while beneath the dazzling technique and the tremendous cast of “Birdman” lies a narcissistic showbiz fantasy. But I can’t get super exercised about “Birdman’s” likely victory, honestly. As Harris has noted, it speaks to a widely shared experience in Hollywood, the attempt to create something beautiful and meaningful that runs off the rails into the swamp. It’s “a movie about someone who hopes to create something as good as ‘Boyhood,’” a reading both barbed and generous, and right on the money.

Is this is our Oscar live blog?
Great opening. Love Jack Black.
Without a doubt, my favorite Oscars live blog.
So while I didn't agree with every award *coughRedmaynecough*, they actually did a lot better than expected, and I'm all in all generally satisfied. And if nothing else, the actual show itself was really fun at that, so, surprisingly good stuff tonight!

NPH was a little awkward at times, but he did fine. I'm a sucker for sing and dance numbers.
Best Actor award was a joke. Everything else I was fine with. Didn't hate any of the movies nominated.

Redmayne's win is one of those things that I thought was a lock because it's an Oscar cliche (disability and all), but I can't really argue with if the alternatives are those other 4 nominees.

Birdman was such an embarrassingly narcissistic pick for Best Picture. I think Innaritu said it best when he talked about awards not being the important thing, but rather the test of time. Good luck with that, Birdman.

The Academy is so predictable. I at least thought maybe Wes Anderson would get best director.

I was optimistic that Linklater would at least get director, so Boyhood's lone win coming from Arquette stung more than I expected. And while I don't mind Birdman, it's script win in the face of GBH is just silliness. Really liked Simmons and Arquette's speeches. And Pawlikowski for talking over the music cue. And the musicians having to abruptly shut up when the directors for the doc short dedicated their film to those contemplating suicide.
I try to make peace with the fact that some Oscar voters likely thought: who's been nominated before, saw that Iñárritu had a prior nomination, and went with him over Anderson or Linklater.

I like Iñárritu as a person and a director. But not giving the award to Linklater was shocking to me and comfirmation in my mind that the Academy is largely composed of self-absorbed dicks.

When people in my life ask me what I thought of Birdman, I say it's all right, but I like the director's other movies better. To which, they respond, "What else has he directed?"
What's most interesting to me is that no one seems to remember Babel, even though it starred Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett and was itself nominated for Best Picture.

I enjoy Birdman a lot, and have no problem with its Best Picture win. Far better than the early prediction of Imitation Game, which I think is the most "Baity" of the nominations.
Haven't seen Theory of Everything, which seems baity. I want to see it because the fireworks shots seem pretty incredible. So at least there's that moment.
Boyhood not winning for Director or Editing is just baffling to me. A movie that was shot over twelve years, that flows pretty seamless, and never out of character, is remarkable. Not my favorite movie of the year, but I respect the hell out of it. Simply baffled it didn't win.
Neil Patrick Harris was given the worst material in quite some time. He did have an impressive first musical set though. Wonder whose idea was the magic trick, because that was the worst bit of the night. They should've put in more bits to each nomination. A Boyhood reference to Doogie Howser… How'd that not happen?
I like the recipients of the Lego Oscars more than the actual winners.
Hmm… Quite the amount of thoughts for what I thought was the most boring award show in memory.

There seemed to be an internet (and possibly irl) backlash brewing against Boyhood. A lot of casual movie fans on other sites were calling it "Boringhood" (lame) or calling out the really awkward scene with the Hispanic plumber guy (not-so-lame and justified even if the total running time of that little subplot is about five minutes).

I still want to see American Sniper. Do I have to sit through The Theory of Everything? It looks so dull. At least Imitation Game has Bendict Cumberbatch.
So yeah I would have been fine with the majority of the BP noms winning. I'm not sure why backlashes even exist. Kind of silly really.

I agree, but Indiewire wrote a whole thinkpiece about the racial 'problems' of Boyhood. I thought it was absurd (other than that one character who is barely in the movie), but I'm just saying there were criticisms of it coming from different angles leading up to the Academy Awards and I think that derailed Boyhood's frontrunner status.
